Silent Hill Origins for the PS2

Nah... it was designed for psp, so it feels a bit off to get it for PS2. Then again I play my psp games sitting on my couch and psp hooked on to speakers.

But still I'm really not keen on supporting psp->ps2 games.

I picked it up yesterday, and will get around to playing it soon.

I didn't finish the PSP version because I didn't like the controls.

I wonder what original content if any it has, otherwise I already completed the PSP version doing everything. Once you get the nacho libre costume and laser rifle, things become interesting. :D

I picked it up last night. So far so good. I'd say it's the most vanilla of the Silent Hill games so far. (You're in Silent Hill. Walk around the map, find hospital, kill nurses...) but it's probably the most fun I've had playing a Silent Hill outside 3.

One thing I'm finding weird is how the music just seems to cut out at some points. Dunno if it's intentional, but the parts where you're in silence are pretty creepy as well. The enemies use their stupid grapple move too often, and the designers put enemies right outside some of the doors /w loading times so... there's not much you can do to escape some damage sometimes.

And weapons break way too quickly.

It's worth $30 imo. Graphics pretty much on par with past games.

Saw it at EB yesterday, and just about bought it. But I can't bring myself to do so when I just didn't like it that much in the first place.

Do you guys think the PS2 version is worth getting over the PSP version if I don't care about playing on a small screen? Is it a really shoddy port or will it play and look pretty decent on PS2? I just want to get the best experience.

I bought it yesterday.

There is nothing shoddy about the port. It has updated visuals over the PSP (the texture quality is actually pretty nice on the backgrounds) and controls just like any other PS2 game in the series.

The ps2 version has widescreen support as well.

That's about where the differences end though.

anyone wanna post some pics? ....would be greatly appreciated as I wanna know if I should pick up PSP or PS2 version, as they are both the same price now...

They're pretty easy after you get used to them and not being a deer caught in headlight. The minute the loading stops, bash them with your weapon or in the case of the nurse in the basement, immediately runs to the left so you'll have enough space to fight her.

Yea the first time it happened I was like " WTF?" because Silent Hill doesn't usually go for the cheap scare, but now I'm expecting it everytime I go into a room and do something. They usually spawn one outside the door again.

Anyways, I'm in the
Sanitarium
now. Good level of atmosphere so far.

Kind of OT, but I really want to pick up Silent Hill 2 and possibly this as well. I have a 360 and a PS3, should I get the Xbox or PS2 SH2?

really a controller/platform preference as Greatest Hits Silent Hill 2 for PS2 is the same as the Xbox version

...though the Xbox version goes for like $3 used in most places

If you haven't played SH2 before, then you absolutely have to get it on whatever console you choose to pick up. It really is one of the greatest games ever devised.

Are you considering getting an xbox or PS2 for it though? Or backwards compatability? I've heard the BC on 360 is completely unplayable. No idea about the PS3 though. I'd almost say just pick up a PS2, they are cheap as a turd on a log and there are a billion other games worthy of playing too.

That I don't know. I never owned an xbox. However the xbox version comes with the extra single player game where you play as Maria. Probably worth picking up that version for that reason.

I picked it up yesterday.

For the most part, it's pretty good.

Camera is a bitch, and I hate how I'm constantly checking the map because the environment with the unworkable camera becomes disorienting.

Luckily you can reset it behind via L1.

Anyway, two questions.

1) does this work with hd loader

2) where is the pistol? I'm at the sanitarium and i've found a-many pistol rounds, but no gun.

You must have missed it from one of the rooms. I remember being so terrorized by the game that all I want is to exit a room as soon as possible. As a result, I also missed a gun placed in one of the rooms.

So I beat the game, took me about 5 hours. I have to say the "levels" in this game were way better than I expected, except maybe the first hospital which was pretty bland.

The Sanitarium was really dark and tense, I really felt like I wanted to get out of this place as quickly as possible.
The Theatre was simply amazing, the art and everything blew me away. I have no problem saying this is one of the best "levels" in all of the series. I really loved the setting.
The Motel was also very good and it felt refreshing to be outside most of the time. And of course the presence of the Butcher and learning who he truly is made it even more interesting.
The bonus costumes for Travis are so much cooler and nicer than the one he originally has.

There's a PS2 re-release with the extra content, too.
How the hell did you get banned?

Anyway, I think I'm close to the end and I have to say, for an outsourced game, Origins is impressive. Hats off to Climax UK for making a game that "gets" the SH look and for cleaning up the absolute mess made by Climax US. The enemy designs are (mostly) great and the level design is solid.

I can't consider it anything more than really good fanfic and the plot is fairly predictable (though surprisingly well-written for what it is), and it isn't quite up to the level of the first four games in the series in any way, but it's worth it for any hardcore fan who misses the SH formula.

I bought this yesterday and I just tried it. I've played (but not finished) the PSP version too.

A great port. The game actually looks better, as in graphically updated. I was just expecting a quickie port since it was announced like a month before release but turns out there was some good effort into this.

SH belongs on consoles. I couldnt play Origins on PSP, it just didnt feel right. Now it does. The Dualshock controllers makes a big difference for me.

Also, for those who wonder. I am playing this on my 80GB PS3. Works like a charm.

On an interesting note. Travis in-game model looks very diferent on the PS2 version than on the PSP version. On the PSP version he looks more clean cut and softer looking and on the PS2 version he looks more scruffy and much older. Just pointing it out.

TBH, even though the enemy designs were quite crappy, the original build of Origins was IMO quite impressive in terms of graphics. I think its the best looking PSP game. The revamped game, while still impressive, just doesnt seem to look as good.

I've been thinking a lot about SH2 lately, and as much as I want to play through it again for what would be the thirtieth time, I just can't. The story and atmosphere are amongst the best ever made, but the actual gameplay has not aged very well. Given the choice, I'd probably just record the cutscenes and important gameplay bits and just watch the video from time to time.

Graphically it is impressive. That's about the only way it's impressive, but I'll give it that.

Out of curiosity are the melee controls still frigid as hell? Did they change the combat at all in origins to make it more smooth or am I gonna have to wait for SH5?

Swinging your fists and your weapons is a bit more responsive over previous games I find. But there's no lock on or combos or anything, if that's what you're asking for.

Responsiveness was somewhat what I was looking for. I understand and love that SH is about environment and cinematic in-depth story but having characters fighting like slow robots has really pissed me off.

Picked this up, beat it. Do you love fighting the camera in fits of terror (and rage)? Do you love walking up to every door in sight (of which there is usually a lot) just to find out said door is "blocked, and can not be opened"? Do you love to check your map every 2 minutes? Well then, HERE YOU GO!!

All kidding aside it's a very good game. I played it on the PS3 and did run in to a lock up near the end where the game tried to load a FMV and instead just stayed on the loading screen forever.. Maybe a PS3 thing or maybe just a rare bug, it didn't happen the second time after quitting out the game and loading my previous save.

Also, if this game is 16:9 why doesn't it fill my 16:9 screen? Upscaled to 1080p it's even smaller than when running with no scaling at 480p, it's not as bad as playing the PSP2000 through component mind you. A minor annoyance, but still.. Shouldn't this stuff fill the whole screen?? I hate black boarders.

haha, you mustn't have played the previous SH games. Yeah it's annoying, but I don't realistically expect 20 rooms on every floor of a building in the game to be open and have something meaningful inside them.

And chicks dig map reading skills...

Just a heads up, not a spoiler.

The game has 2 endings .... first playthrough "normal ending", second playthrough "true ending"

I'd say, please sit through the second playthrough as the story/ending is REALLY cool !

Nah, I've played (and still own) Silent Hill 1-4. The first thing I thought when going in to Origins was "let the door unopenings begin", though I honestly had forgotten how ridiculous it truly was. Maybe it's the completionist in me, but even when I find "the door" I always turn right back around to the previous area and try to open every other door I hadn't tried previously even though I know there is very little chance any of them will open, especially since Travis doesn't look at them. How the hell does he know which doors will open from half way across the room any ways?

It's all for the love of the map though. I only died a handful of times in Origins but each time it was "shit, I've got to go back and get all those doors marked on my map again". :P Must be OCD.

SHO freezes 8/10 times when I try to access the item screen (pressing select) after the hospital area. It only happened twice while I was in the hospital. I am playing on 60GB (U.S.) PS3.

I plugged SHO into Sony's BC error database and they did not even have the game listed.

Anyone having the same issue?

I case you haven't decided yet, I recommend the PS2 version. The XBOX version adds a perpixel flashlight beam, true, but there are plenty of other missing graphical effects and wierd glitches that weren't present on PS2. The PS2 version is how the game was originally intended to be experienced and is the version you should go with.

More than any other game I can think of, however, you MUST play SH2 on a CRT. The game relies on areas of complete blackness (as in, no shadow detail) in order to create a sense of dread. SH0 was made for an LCD (PSP) and works better on modern displays. SH2 looks like ass on just about anything other than a CRT.

How is the saving system in SH Origins (PSP-version). Can you save in any point of game or do you have to search for save points (like typewrites in RE).

I would like to buy this for PSP but I also want to be able to save and quit the game any time I want.

It uses save points like the older games, but remember, the PSP offers a sleep mode so you can stop at any time.

I stopped in to pick this up from EB games yesterday, and they had a free (!) copy of "the silent hill experience" just laying on the counter for anyone to take.

not a bad pickup, if I do say so myself :D
