Screen shots be damned, this game is still really good looking.

GAF is just a bunch of high profile 'gimmie everything I want' group of people. Of course nothing ever lives up to your expectations, because the majority of 'GAF' is just too damn far up on their high horse.

Transitions to light / dark in this game are amazing, seriously get over it GAF...it's kind of sad.

do you work for the collective? :P

that video looks okay, but those screens are ass. People are saying so. Nothing to "get over" really, except the shock of seeing a graphical powerhouse game series turn out so ugly.

I only have a Wii at the moment (I do plan on getting the MGS4 PS3 pack), so you know graphics don't mean much to me. But even I can admit those shots look like ass. That desk is atrocious. But hey, maybe it means they're planning a Wii port! :lol

Well, believe what you want, but I have a strong feeling that the reason those low resolution textures are present is either place holders and / or they are just 'layered' and those area's will go through the transition. I can't imagine they can store 2 layers of high resolution textures for the transitions, so that could be a very likely reason for some low resolution textures here and there.

That said, other images look phenomenal, so I'm not worried like the rest of "GAF".

well , that would be a poor choice and wouldn't make a lot of sens .
compromising texture quality in the whole game for just measly 10 seconds transition sequences , they could just make it pre-rendered with engine assets without breaking the immersion .

omg I just realized... it's all part of the game's fear factor!!!!

it's a new kind of terror that really grabs the actual player. "what if the game sucks ass??" it's the scariest thing I've yet encountered in the series. brilliant.
SH4 sucked ass, so what?

This game is going to be great for alot of reason. Great story ( we can only pray ), atmosphere/visuals and sound. As long as they keep things paint by numbers within the Silent Hill book, things should be ok. I do think a reinvention of the franchise is due.

Plus, lots of people who complain on game forums are often not even fans of the games they complain about anyway.

And why is that?

Difficult to put it into words for me... but mostly, atmosphere. I don't know, it is like it lacks that "thing" that makes it feel like you are really watching something from Silent Hill... almost too clean, definite.
To me it isn't even ugly, but I would never think Silent Hill watching those shots (it seems more like a generic horror game to me), while I do watching a shot from SH2 or SH3 for example.

No, I think the majority of the people complaining are old crumudgeons, upset that Team Silent isn't working on it, or Japanophiles who are shocked and appaled that an American team is working on a Japanese franchise.

The pics in the OP are far too washed out and bright (SH games tend to have higher contrast and deep darkness) and are severely lacking in grain, though I'll have to see the game running on my TV before I can properly judge that

The fog looks like...fog. It's lacks the nebulae-like appearance that SH fog has become famous for.

The shadows are also faaar too pedestrian. Darken that shit and allow objects other than characters to cast them

Ugh no. An ugly-looking game is an ugly-looking game regardless of where they came from. Many people bashed Silent Hill: Origins when Climax USA made a big mess of it. However, once Climax UK took over and did a good job changing the look and feel of the game, most people love it. I think SH:O is a rather good entry in the series and it doesn't matter that it came from a western developer.

As for SH5, the early shots of the game showed promise despite one or two horrible character design. However, these last few batches of screenshots are pretty bad.

I stand by my statements, GAF is always a crew of people likely to jump to conclusions.

Team Silent GAVE Silent Hill 5 to The Collective when the collective showed Konami their Concept work. I think that says Team Silent was at least a little confident in The Collective.

Actually I think the opposite is the case here. It's sort of like Fallout. People are so devoted to the game that they can't stomach the idea of something being different, so they have to tear it apart.

Not that I'm saying there's nothing to criticise, but the way people are acting you'd think someone just punched their mum.

I do agree that this really looks nowhere near as good as I'd expect from a next-gen SH game, at least visually. The lack of soft shadows is kind of a bummer.

This is not about "something being different". SH4 was different and I loved it, warts and all.

This is about a once great franchise being entirely handed over to a developer with no horror pedigree at all. Aside from Yamaoka, nobody who helped make the first four games is involved. How could that do anything but upset the fans?

I consider myself a Fallout fan, but I'm looking forward to Fallout 3. Bethesda is a talented developer and can probably pull it off well enough. They've gotten the look right, at least. I don't think the situation with SHV is the same thing.

No they're not. From everything that was shown, game looks like an uninspired adaptation / rip-off of Christophe Gans' movie, which is certainly not a good thing - and certainly not what silent hill fans were expecting. Maybe it's enough for you, but don't come and tell us what's good and what isn't.

I wonder how many developers would love to be able to create a game where the draw distance is 30 ft by design? The environments should be unbelievable because of that expectation alone.

the first batch of shots are ass. if they don't represent the game they shouldn't have been released.

screenshots are pr and it isn't our fault if that backfires as it has here.

a number of here were positive about this game in every prior thread so gaf skepticism doesn't account for the reaction.

love the shops.

Some shots aren't bad, some are.

The videos I've seen look pretty nice, though. Remember how awful Silent Hill Origins once looked? This looks nowhere near that bad. They could very well turn this around.

What makes everyone so certain that the original Japanese team could have done that much better technically? Artistically, sure, but this generation has proven time and again that a lot of the best Japanese studios from last gen are struggling with these new machines. As most of them probably were working exclusively on PS2, even the usage of simple shaders often presents itself as a challenge. Capcom is one of the only exceptions to this in that their Framework engine and tools are very solid.
