Been a while gotta bump this thread!
I'm on vacation and bought a few bottles of scotch:
Macallan 12
Caol Ila 12
Glenmorangie Lasanta

I'm looking forward to trying them. Anyone ever tried them, what's your input/which to go with first?

I've had the first and the last. Have a nice meal with the Macallan as an apertif and the Glenmorangie as a digestif. I'm not a hige scotch fan though, the Macallan 18 is a favorite of a friend of mine.

First pickup in a long time. Came highly recommended by the whisky guy at work. Gonna give it a shot shortly:

Finished off a Glenlivet 15 I had. I like that one quite a bit.

Still have about 2/3 each of Glenlivet 18 and Glenmorangie 18. Hoping they'll last until Christmas.

I bought this the other day. $55, rang up as $15. My fingers shook while I paid and I practically ran out of there with it.

Very good, although like with many cask-strength single-malts, it takes awhile to find the sweet spot of added water, and by then you're drunk and you forget the amount the next time.

Just bought a bottle of this. Absolutely in love with the smokey texture and finish, but apparently I'm the only one I know who does. Anyone else enjoy Laphroaig?

If you read the rest of the thread, you'll find plenty of Laphroaig fans. The cask strength is excellent and is definitely one of my favorites.

The Bruichladdich was...disappointing. Maybe it's too subtle for me...I don't know if I could tell it apart from a Glenfiddich 12. Maybe I'll develop an appreciation for it once I try it again.

Maybe I'm just more for smokey whiskies.

So I decided to start my collection with a bottle of Balvenie 12. I like it quite a bit but I think I prefer Laphroaig so I might pick that up next. A friend also recommended Ardbeg which I've never tried. How would you guys say that compares?

Ardbed 10 is pretty similar to what I can recall from Laphroaig QC. Maybe a bit less peat, and a bit more pepper.

As always, I would highly recommend Lagavulin 16 if you're looking to try another Islay scotch. Similar to a Laphroaig, but with more sweetness and depth to it, I feel.

Hm alright. The Lagavulin seems a bit out of my current price range (as does the Ardbed now that I looked it up) but I'll definitely put that on my list.

just picked up my ardbeg galileo - prices are already getting ridic for this on ebay...

I much prefer the uigeadail of the mainline ardbeg whiskys fwiw - but it's a bit pricey

Just picked this one up today:

I'm loving these peated Islay scotches... really can't wait to try the highly praised Uigeadail

^best ardbeg imo; the abrasive peatiness you find in the 10 is tempered by the sherry in the uigeadail. still swithering on opening this bad boy:

not single malt but still whiskey - I picked up some jack daniel's tennessee honey today... noooottt bad actually. a little sweet but not overly cloying, very drinkable

sorry to burst your bubble, but it is a single malt

I have to take some pictures when I get the chance. I'm more of a Bourbon guy, but I got a really nice single malt from tasmania of all places.

http://www.larkdistillery.com.au/products/whisky/single-malt-single-cask

Not cheap, but it's really good. Super small production. The barrels are tiny in comparison to standard. I'm not into super peaty single malts. I also have a Belvanie 15 year, but again, not a super peaty offering.

I've also recently aquired a bottle of the Pappy Van Winkle 12 and 20 year bourbons. Good luck finding any of those. Super hard to find and the 20 year is my prize whiskey in my selection. I have two special release buffalo trace whiskeys as well. George T Stagg Bourbon (140 or proof) and a Thomas Handy Sazarack Rye (120 or so proof). Both of those are uncut and unfiltered and are surpisingly good neat. The George T Stagg works well with some ice though.

If anyone is into Bourbon I would also recomend trying Angels Envy. It's the guy who makes woodford reserve I believe. Though he finishes the bourbon in port barrels which greatly change the nose and has a nice affect on the flavor and finish.

I've been getting into Rye whiskey A LOT more recently. My new favorite go to "every day" (I don't drink daily at all), is the Bulleit Rye. Cheap and tasty.

Me and half a bottle of Old Grandad 100 had some fun on saturday night. Sunday was a different story. Its more of a mixing whiskey but i made due. Making sweet tea whiskey with the second half.

Had some Delmore 17 about a month ago. Super smooth but the aftertaste stayed for hours.

Anyone here tried the Glengoyne 17? My local shop just started carrying the 10 & 17 so I was curious if they were any good. On a sidenote, my most recent pickup, Glenmorangie Quinta Ruban, was a disappointment. The port wine casks made this far too "winey" for my tastes, and it just seemed sour to me. At least it was cheap.

I finally got around to taking some pictures. I'm missing my 4 Roses Single Barrel as it just ran out, but this is good enough. As you can see, I'm more of an American Whiskey guy though I do enjoy a single malt every now and again. The Lark being my favorite of the bunch. Though I do enjoy the Belvaenie as well. I also ran out of a Chivas 18, but for some reason I don't care for blends much so I don't have any intention of replacing it like I do the four roses.

The Pappy Van Winkle 20 year is amazing. My wife actually likes it better neat (she doesn't like straight booze). The George T Stagg and Thomas Handy Rye are both amazing neat as well. Though they have a little bite to them. I mean the bourbon is 71% alcohol and the Rye is 64%. They're both uncut and unfiltered. The George T Stag and Thomas Handy both benefit from a cube of ice. The hancock is another bourbon that's good neat. The 12 year Pappy I like to put a cube in as well, but also drink neat on occasion.

I always wanted to get a bottle of the Pappy, but was put off by the price. Finally, a couple of years ago, one day I decided to just spend the $75 and get the damn thing, but they were suddenly gone from all the shelves. And the shelf had been full just the day before. I haven't seen it since.

Yup. Look at the inflated prices on eBay. It's gone as soon as it hits shelves. There is a total wine that gets them here a couple times a year. They won't tell you when. You just have to get lucky. The only reason I was able to get it is because my wife has a connection through the lounge at the hotel she works at. It's how I got the 12 year too. The lark as well.

the weird thing about the pappy is that it is super easy to find here in europe

I can walk into my local whisky shop and walk out with the 15, 20, 23. they are lined up 4/5 deep... I think the 15 may actually be tougher to get hands on but it can def be had. pricey mind

apparently it is super rare in the US though and shipments sell out asap sight unseen

That is odd. They actually have limits on how many bottles each county is supposed to get here. I would imagine bourbon being more popular here too.

all this talk of pappy van winkle so I picked up the 10yr 107 proof today... woof, talk about fiery!!!

edit: after first glass, this is lovely. can I find enough money to plump for the 15 or 20? not sure. they had a bottle of the 20 in the store I went to and it was £115 (!) ($186)

The 20 loses A LOT of that fire.

That's an awesome bar.

Drinking chivas right now. not a single malt, don't give a fuck. Does the jab.

It's from Howard Miller, some clock company that recently started making bar furniture. I was kind of irritated by all the wine storage in the bottom, but as it turns out it fits "standard" liquor bottles too. I'm pretty pleased.

Too smokey for me. Poured it side by side with makers 46 and there was no comparison.

It was overpoweringly smokey. Not happy with my $48 purchase. Will pass off to the father in law.

Got given a bottle of the Caol Ila 1 Elements of Islay.

Full proof at 62.9%, when you drop a good amount of water into it, it really opens up and becomes like nothing else! Definitely up there with the best.

You won't find a shortage of Lagavulin fans around here. I haven't had an opportunity to try it myself, yet, but I look forward to it some day.

A few weeks back I was outside of my normal travel area picking up something else, but I knew that there was also a liquor shop around that had a pretty extensive single malt collection, possibly one of the biggest in the state. I looked in on the off-chance, and...hurrah! Finally I have myself a bottle of Yamazaki, which I'd been wanting to get for a long time but could not find anywhere locally. Only had one glass so far, but I enjoyed it, and I'm really curious to see how it stacks up to my Glenmorangie in particular, they seem to share a similar character, at least at the outset.

Lagavulin 16. My man! My favorite as well.

how was it?

Posted above, but I wasn't all that impressed with it. I'm a scotch newbie though, so maybe it's too subtle for me to appreciate. It's too much in line with the Glenlivets and Glenfiddichs of the world for me. I need something with more smoke or body.

+1, nice choice! Lagavulin is probably my all-around favorite single malt. I just bought a bottle of the '95 distillers edition to replace my '91. I'd still like to try some of their higher end releases but I've only seen the 16, the 12 cask strength and the distiller's edition here, or in any bars for that matter.

Got the 95' Distiller's edition aswell, loooooveeee it. The "standard" 16 years is incredible enough but the Distiller's edition adds this little and discrete Toffee sweetness that makes it even more pleasant.

If you can get your hands on the 21 year old edition, just DO it, the best ot them all IMHO, very tricky to find (not produced anymore I think, it was a specific batch, they might have others in the works though).

In 2 days I will be purchasing a sub $200 bottle of whisky. Some of the initial bottles that came to mind: Ardbeg Uigeadial, Highland Park 18, Balvenie Portwood 21,Talisker 18, Oban 18.

I've had none of these and I'm having a hard time deciding. Treating myself to a bottle in honor of a recent promotion. Any thoughts from scotch-gaf?

You honestly can't go wrong with any of those. It depends on your taste. Love smoke? Go with Ardbeg. Actually, just go with Ardbeg. Or Lagavulin. I'm biased.

Here's my latest conquest:

Amazingly smooth, amazingly smokey.

My friend is about to turn 30 and he is a huge scotch fan. To celebrate the occasion I want to get him a bottle of 30 year old single malt. I am personally not much of an aficionado so I would be happy for any recommendations. Here is a quick link I found to start things off:

http://www.masterofmalt.com/age/30-year-old-whisky/

I would ideally like to keep the price under $200 but that is not set in stone. I would also appreciate any links to online shops in the US where I might be able to buy said scotch.

Note: I realize it might be hard to get a "30 year old" bottled in 1983 so my greater priority is that the bottle actually say "30 year old" for maximum effect.
