single malt whisky thread

I was hoping for some Xmas pick-up posts from single malt GAF.

I'm using the final few glasses of my Morangie and Livet to start drinking it neat. Deep inside, I know I've been molesting my malts by adding too much ice. I need to be a man!

Out of all the whiskeys you've listed, Crown is probably the only one I can drink. The others are shit. Try some of the good stuff in this thread.

any suggestions of stuff I should look for guys, category wise, or flavors i should look for?

Sniff it deep, sniff it long, let it sit whilst you let it course through your face. Take your time, sip & lightly swish and you'll find it much easier to drink. Let your body process all that brutally lovely detail.

One man party unit.

I'd suggest to read this whole thread, it's a good read and really goes into good detail about peoples favorites, and will get you pretty enthused about trying out some classics.

Although I'm not really into hard liquors, I figure I'd try a single malt scotch to see if I liked it. Went with something cheap and mainstream: Glenfiddich.

I can't do it. It's ridiculously strong and gut wrenching to my tastes. Am I just not built for whiskey? Or do I need to try something better?

It was pretty delicious with eggnog though! (blasphemy, no doubt).

Ok someone some up for me in simple terms what is a whiskey, what is there to know about it, etc. The names are all weird, I want to be able to make some sense of it. Why are there so many "Glens"?

And happy holidays!

hoh! that is blasphemy. try adding a splash or two of good water and sipping on it slowly. The gut wrenching is only momentary, when you start to love scotch you won't notice that anymore. Which Glenfiddich did you get?

from my understanding a glen is a valley or something like that. so if a distillery is in a glen... it often adds it to the name

Yippee got a Glenlivet Nadurra from the misses for xmas :D

Dont have a picture of it yet so here's a stock image :D

Take your time,

I think that's where I'm struggling. Whenever I have a glass of alcohol in front of me, I feel like I need to finish it almost ASAP. Since discovering this thread and subsequently 'hobby', I've always had my usual 6-8 cans of cheap lager before moving onto my single malt with ice.

Just bought my first bottle of Scotch yesterday! Rather blindly, I went with the Laphroaig 10 year. It was smoother than I thought it would be, but definitely strong. I'm probably going to buy a few sampler bottles of some of the more popular stuff and see what best suits my tastes, but I'm excited to start the journey!

I was about to buy this for New Years but I decided to go with a behemoth 1.75L Macallan 12 year old.

I don't really like to mix my malt drinking with getting drunk. I like to drink malts when I've got something to enjoy, like finishing a big job, listening to a new record etc. Something I'll slow down to enjoy.

I'm with you. Of course if it's some cheap whiskey then I just gulp it down like any other alcohol but for the finer whiskeys I tend to enjoy them. Only one or two glass at a time and most def. no other alcohols before that so I can actually enjoy the flavors. No ice for me either, except for the cask strengths and other extra strong whiskeys.

That's the reason, a distillery often takes its name from where it is.

Some are made up though. There were lots of Speyside ones that added "-Glenlivet" to their names to leach off of the popularity of "The Glenlivet" but the most famous one I can think of is Glenmorangie. Morangie means "big fields" or something like that and it was originally a brewery on a farm. They changed the name to Glenmorangie just because it sounded nicer.

Totally unrelated, Glenmorangie owns Ardbeg, well they are both subsidiaries of Louis Vuitton anyway, and the people who work in Ardbeg are truly nuts. I should probably say eccentric. I mean that in the nicest way but honestly if somebody tells you a mad story about Ardbeg it's easier to just believe it. Pretty much all of them are true.

I haven't looked in this thread for aaaages and I have to say you guys have some damn fine taste in whisky. I might have to try some Yamazaki now.

Thanks for the clarification guys!

I was thinking of buying a bottle tonight and said fuck it, I'll do it tomorrow. Well damnit I have this flu that is taking over me right now and I know Whiskey would kick the shit out of it.

Serves me well:(

I bought my dad a bottle of Glenmorangie Astar. It's a very nice scotch finished in Tennessee whiskey casks. 114 proof, so a bit of water helps.

Perfect if you like it peaty...
Buddy of mine brought me a bottle from England (which was, of course, from Scotland). Never tried it before, but we'll be christening it tomorrow night. :D

Glenlivet is what I'm familiar with. We've got Scots in our family, so I've tried some very good whisky (both in Scotland and Canada), but am always too smashed to remember the brand!

This is on the top of my next bottle list. The flavors described by their website really appeal to me.

I also highly recommend the Nectar D'or. Silky smooth stuff.

I'm currently having a dram of Glenmorangie original. Cheers.

Oh my god this thread, oh my god this thread.

How did I not know about this thread.

I exist on a 4 whiskey system.

1 Irish inexpensive: Generally Powers
1 Irish moderate: Redbreast 12 or Bushmills 16, depends on what's out there.. right now I've got Bushmills 16.

1 Scotch whiskey inexpensive or moderate: Highland Park 12 or currently Auchentoshan Classic

1 Nicer Scotch whiskey.
Right now I've got something amazing, though I can only drink a little of it at a time... it's got to last.

Picked this up through a deal I got at a tasting. It's delicious... buttery and rich like I just can't believe. Even at 56% I'm not using any water; it's just that good. This image isn't mine, though. Happy Holidays to me indeed!

I've also got a bottle of Midleton Very Rare. Got it in Ireland with my wife on our honeymoon... I don't think it'll be opened for a very long time... or at least until we go back!

Her brother has an open bottle though, and if you can taste this stuff I highly recommend it. It's incredibly smooth and tastes like fresh ripe apricot at first, then fades off into that delicious pot still nuttiness. By far my favorite whiskey; I sincerely wish I'd gotten two bottles.

guys, guys, happy new year!

my first pickup of the year:
pict5713txr7.jpg
don't think i've seen this before
pict5716rppe.jpg

a Hakushu single cask!
1989-2009 sherry cask, 62% vol., 91 SV points and massively dark :D :D :D :D
and it wasn't cheap at all :( :(

also a load of samples

karuizawa, glengoyne, balvenie, yamazaki heavily peated, cragganmore, bladnoch, springbank (most of them are single cask)

the bladnoch is 'interesting' from sniffing at the bottle, it's like putting pears in a stinky boot and letting them rot in there :lol

i'm pretty sure bowmore is the distributor for suntory whisky in europe. i've seen that labeling on any yamazaki and hakushu bottle over here.

anyway, nice pickup. i can't afford to drop that much money on whisky. i got a hakushu bottle at home too, but haven't tasted it yet.

got the bottle "second hand" for a decent price, buying it directly from TWE would bee too expensive for me too :P

i was referring to the pregnant woman :)
also afaik Bowmore belongs to Suntory

You invested a bundle on that one, didn't you ? :b I hate to buy expensive bottles since I feel obligated to save them for some special occasion and such occasion almost never arrives. When you finally open it you will taste what you paid for and you will feel even shittier because there are no cheap alternatives for it and you know if you want to taste it again you have to pay the price again :lol

but then again I'm a cheap bastard.

Bought a liter bottle last time I was in a tax free zone. Very good indeed.

Awesome thread btw!

Last "expensive/exotic" bottle I bought was the Bruichladdich Islay XVII, I'm a huge fan of the smooth Islay XV, this one is a bit more fruity, takes some getting used to but turns out to be better compared to the XV. (imho)

bruichladdich-17-jr..jpg

46%

For day to day drinking I've got The Glenlivet 12 and Glenfiddich 12. I'm always amazed by how good that Glenlivet 12 is for that price...

Besides that I've got a bottle Macallan 18 years old, Tallisker 57° North, 2 bottles of Port Charlotte PC7 (one of them still closed), Bruichladdich Islay 15 and 17, Glenlivet Nadurra, Highland Park 18 and that's about it I think, some other less expensive/special bottles.

Awesome "hobby"

Yeah, for sure. I'm in the process of scouting some more entry-level type stuff.. :D
:D

What's your budget?

The Glenlivet 12 is very smooth and not too expensive around €26, if you're looking to be spending a bit more money I can recommend the Bruichladdich Islay XV around €55 but so worth it, it's just so smooth, dangerously smooth :lol

Koji, my budget can probably support either, but I'll most likely go with the glenlivet until I can really start to appreciate the higher end stuff. Thanks for the suggestions.

pretty nice whisky and affordable too, thou ultimatively i wasn't too fond of the honey-lemon'ish flavors. so i won't buy it again.

also tasted the Cragganmore 14yo Friends of Classic Malts sample yesterday. It was pretty good, suuuuuuuuuuuuuper smooth. the smell was nice with overripe fruits, wildflowers, pearjuice. the taste was a cream/buttery + the stuff above, but a bit weak/subtle. i think the flavor would have been better/stronger at 43% or 46% vol. instead of 40%

Yeah, i'm sipping on Talisker right now, and the acidic lemonyness of it is too much for me too, like a deeper, caramelly whisky. Damn you Lagavulin, you've ruined me!

I'm not really a scotch drinker, but a friend brought over a bottle of Bowmore and the smokey scent and flavors were certainly alluring.

Still remember that smell, mmm

tried a bit of my Karuizawa 1989-2002 12yo sherry cask sample.
daaaaaaaaaaaamn that is good stuff, can only imagine how good the older insanely expensive stuff must be >_<

edit: japan time! also tried the Ichiro's Malt Double Distilleries (Vatting of Hanyu and Chichibu)
smells like fresh apple and wood (nice!), taste is woody and christmas'ish with cinnamon and clove.
overall a bit disappointing, especially if you consider the price of the bottle.

btw. anyone got recommendations for oaky whiskies? like the super dry oak and caramel kind

i thought the glenlivet french oak was dry and delicious enough, but i wouldn't call it caramely. so maybe somebody else has a better suggestion.

I'm about to finish my first bottle of Glenmorangie The Original and it has been delicious. For my next purchase I'd love to go for something more smokey, but close to the same price range.

I tried some of my friend's Blue Label and I loved the smokey taste. Are there any good reasonable single malts that can offer a comparable smokey flavor?

Laphroaig Quarter Cask or Laphroaig 10 is my vote and, depending on where you live, might be cheaper than your Glenmorangie. Hope you really like smoke.

Currently sipping on some Cragganmore 12. This stuff is really excellent. Might be the best nose on a scotch I've tried. I'm a bit sad since the bottle is nearly empty. Then I'm reminded on how much I've filled out my single malt collection in the past few months and I'm happy again.

Edit: I definitely agree with the poster who mentioned they thought Cragganmore (14 in that case) would benefit from bottling at 43 or 46%. Doesn't need any water at all as it is though. And the nose!

Wow. So I bought a bottle of Yamazaki 12 year. Really, really good.

Just a question, how long does a bottle last you? I've been having 1/3 of a glass every other night or so and I'm more than half way through it. Also, what other whiskey would you recommend for me to try if I really enjoy this one? Trying to sick around the same price range as well.

Good whiskey is so much better than good beer imo.
