hmm I just found out the account exec at my work signed us up for a membership to a local scotch and cigar bar... this could be totally awesome, or really dangerous.

Lots of tasting events. :)

Suntory (Hakushu) Kioke Shikomi 1981

:O

That looks sexy as hell.

Anyways, a coworker gave me a sample of the Laphroaig Quarter Cask. It's not bad, though it lacks a little bit of sweetness for my tastes. The Yoichi 10 is still my favorite drink up until now. It's a bit less peaty/smokey than the Laphroaig (I think), but has a tiny bit of underlying sweetness that makes it to intriguing.

He says he'll get me some Lagavulin 16 soon enough.

How much did you pay for that beauty?
bottle ~50€ (for whatever reason it was really cheap)
shipping ~50€
unfortunately the weight was a bit over 2kg else the shipping would have been 20€
>_<

50 euro for a 30 year old whisky?? The contents must've been replaced with sake ;)

I've been in your situation.. The best i've found is http://www.beltramos.com/default.aspx
They ship fast, it's cheap and they have the the Hibiki, Yamazaki 12 and 18. All of which are priced quite well and pretty much the only ones you'll find in the US other than super specialty liquor stores. If you want any of the other JP whiskeys, you'll have to look for international websites. Good luck!

aw snap what did i do! two rather expensive bottles incoming.
i won an auction that i didn't think i'd win and an order came trough that i didn't think would work out.
gonna live on water and bread for the rest of the month. -_-

$45 shipped for Yamazaki 12. That's less than what I paid for it from a store. I can live with that.

Stocks of Japanese whisky Yamazaki are set to run dry across the globe this year after Suntory admitted it had not been prepared for the huge rise in demand for the product in recent years.
*snip*
“We are executing an allocation plan to ensure we can catch up. We are working on allocation by region to ensure that every market is catered for as best as possible in the coming months.”
Miyamoto, who confirmed stocks of Yamazaki 10 Year Old had already run dry, said he was confident that the distillery will be able to meet global demand by 2012.

Got a Laphroaig 10 bottle today. Had drams before but a new bottle all to myself... :D

S.L maybe if you bought less Yamazaki there'd be some for the rest of us >:[

So guys, I know nothing about Japanese whisky's, but is the Yamazaki 10 y/o any good? It's 10 euro of at my local shop and I've been wanting to try a Japanese whisky, but I have no idea if it's any good.

duuuude, 10€ for a bottle? that's criminal, usually goes for around 40€.
It is really mild - if you like the younger Glenlivet or Balvenie you will like the Yamazaki 10

No it's a €10 discount, It's around €30 now. My bad if that was unclear :p
If I ever saw a yamazaki 10 y/o for 10 euro I'd pick it up without a doubt ;)

But I guess I'll pick up a bottle then.

Great thread. I have a great girlfriend. She introduced me to some Lagavulin 16 yr. Fell in love. HARD. We now have Lagavulin 16 yr. and Oban sitting on our shelf. I'm thinking tonight is an Oban night.

So...any recommendations for a peaty-smokey whiskey, but with a bit of heavy sweetness to it? I'm trying to find something like the Yoichi 10 without having to spend $130 on a bottle.

Not sure how easily you can pick up independent bottlings in the (i presume) us.
For owners bottlings you could try the Caol Ila Distillers Edition, it costs around 50€ here
edit: that beltramos site posted above has it

I'm in Canada. I'm restricted to the LCBO, or the SAQ if I go across the border to Quebec. =\

Have you had: NIKKA TAKETSURU PURE MALT 12 YEARS OLD WHISKY ?

I might just buy a bottle of Yoichi 10 again. I really liked that stuff.

A coworker has also recommended the Ardbeg 10.

Ardbeg Uigeadail is all you'll ever need :).

Lagavulin fills those shoes pretty nicely. My fav.

So.. after scouring the internets, I randomly called my local liquor store and finally found a bottle of Ardbeg Alligator! Of course there was a one bottle limit.. But I worked around that.

going to a whisky tasting night in about half an hour.

Im taking Hart Brothers 15 yo.

There will also be a Glenlivet 12yo, Glenmorangie and a Australian Whisky - not sure of the name but will let you know what it is when I get back. Apparently it is awesome.

Karuizawa 1982

My birth year vintage an the karuizawa distillery is only few kilometers from my birthplace.
pretty awesome! - Everybody needs to own a bottle of their birth year :)

taketsuru 12 - nope but i have a sample of that one here i think. haven't tasted it yet thou.

Ardbeg 10 is very nice too, lots of peat and sweet vanilla, fairly light alá (as in not rich) flavor wise thou.

Thought long and hard about the glasses in the past. But then I decided to make a habit of purchasing nosing glasses from individual distilleries as a memento when I visit. They are generally pretty nice and made by Glencairn, but are also emblazoned with that distillery's brand. So far I only have a Buffalo Trace, but more to come soon enough.

1982 is the best birth year *high fives*

...but I don't have a bottle from my birth year :(

However, it is my birthday coming up next month so I'm hoping to get some additions to the whisky collection!

wish there was more discussion of flavor and features in this thread. it's just a bunch of pictures of unopened bottles and "is this any good? i bought it but haven't tried it yet" posts.

i can tell you why i like one burger or steak over another. i want to hear the same for all of this whiskey.

Never had it myself but it is "bottom shelf" stuff. So no, I would be very surprised if it is any good.

Oh... thing is... I'm looking for a whisky for my wedding... but an economic one!

I don't have enough cash to invite 150 persons a fine whisky.

From what i tasted Famous Grouse and Teachers are solid blends for little money.
thou if this is a cost issue i'd stick to 'normal' stuff - beer, wine, etc...

Consider Jameson then too. But if you go to a place like Sams you should be able to get some quality stuff cheap. I've seen Macallan 12 yr there for $30. Not sure what they sell Johnny Walker Red and Jameson for.

when i first bought the yamazaki 10 it was 26-29€. now it's in the ~37€ price range. oh well, there is lots of other great whisky to try.

i agree.

If anyone is looking for Japanese whiskies and we can work out the payment logistics, I am willing to purchase and send it to you. I have 2 really good stores close by that I can check prices.
