Siren is kicking my ass

Damn this game is hard. I was looking for a copy of Silent Hill 3 at Gamestop, but couldn't find one, so I picked Siren up instead. I like the concept, and the soundtrack is freaking me out, but I can't get passed the second level (the first level with the professor dude and his girl).

I appreciate the stealth element, but sweet jesus Solid Snake would have a hard time making it through this village :lol

I think part of the problem is that I'm so paranoid to use the flashlight, I end up getting lost and running into the bad zombie dudes. Anyone have any tips to help out? Or must I just become psychic stealth warrior and bear the pain the game dishes out? :(

I couldn't be more sorry.

Seriously, man. You're missing out. ;_;

Come on, Siren is a great game. Probably better than SH3 actually. But is hard and very unforgiving. It really shows you how bad the AI is in most games.

it's all trial by error, really. if you catch your death, remember what you did and do your best not to do it next time. :D good luck!

I like the setting, idea and production values of Siren but I wouldn't say it's near the quality of Silent Hill 3.
SH3 gives of a pretty damn good experience your first time through, it's only after a while(after completing it) you realise that SH2(and SH1) was a better 'life altering' experience. The adventure of SH3 is pretty darn good, so many moments.

Yeah, so this game is kind of not good. :\

It isn't really scary, and it's already apparent that the gameplay is breaking apart at the seams. There are some cool effects, but the gameplay is barely functional.

Siren is neat, but it's hard....too hard.

It's the kind of hard that doesn't make you excited about trying and trying until you beat it. It's the kind of hard that makes you get bored of the game and never play it again :( I hear the story is good, but I never finished it so I dunno.

I hope Siren 2 is easier :(

Siren did have a cool look to it, and I'm all for the limiting controls concept (sometimes), but the stealth is absurd. The hilarious voice acting didn't help.

SH3, on the other hand, might be the best horror game I've played.

Siren had a lot of interesting ideas but implemented them all poorly. It's too bad; if it had done them well, Siren would be the survival horror game all survival horror games stole from.

Particularly frustrating were the adventure elements. Even Phantasmagoria's weren't that arbitrary.

Exactly. This is a game that had some good ideas, but the gameplay/difficulty level is just ridiculous. It wouldn't be as bad if it wasn't for the numerous 'escort' missions (or as I would call them- fucking virtual babysitting)- considering no matter how well you do personally, it's gameover if the dumbass, defenseless shitheel you are guiding around gets sighted by the relentless zombie-things.

Some of the chapters were great, the atmosphere is unquestionably effective (the game was designed by one of the original designers of the first Silent Hill), but the gameplay and difficulty is a killer, no pun intended.

On top of that, there's just something very silly about having Japanese characters with British accents, I think. :D

I hope Siren 2 corrects a lot of the problems with the first game, but I'll definitely be waiting for reviews before even renting it.

Siren is hard until u learn to play it *properly*. Yeah, it kicked my ass too many, many times. But use the sightjack (map the channels on the D-pad) and stay calm until it eventually "kicks in". Do what u would do in a real life situation (besides shitting your pants). It's an awesome game and trust me when I say you need to play it till the end. It only gets better and better (and scarier and very touchy in some moments) and some of its "time-location" based puzzles are pure genius. Sure the most innovative horror game since the very first Silent Hill (no suprise the game director is the very same - now working for SCEI).

I did play the japanese version BTW.

Smart move. The British dubbing for the NA version absolutely destroyed the game for me. It wasn't like Resident Evil, where it was so cheesy it was hilarious and enjoyable, but like someone with metal nails scratching a chalkboard that goes on forever. Why SCEA didn't include the Japanese dub with subs is beyond me. They had to know that that dub wouldn't help establish it as a viable new franchise.

Anyway, I hope Siren 2 gets better treatment.
