Skate it control details

Skate It is definitely going to come with a learning curve for many people. Then again, we're not skaters, ourselves. Pro-skater Danny Way has plenty of experience, though, and when he stepped onto the balance board for the first time at the event, he got the hang of it almost immediately. So maybe all you skaters out there will find it to be an intuitive representation of the real thing.

Last time we saw Skate It we were only able to play with the remote. This method works well and should be a perfectly viable option for anyone who doesn't own the balance board. The A button will give you a push. Once you're going, gesture maneuvers will allow you to pull off any trick in the book. Most of these gestures are intuitive: lift the remote straight up to ollie, lift it up and tilted to perform a heelflip or kickflip, make a circle in various directions to do different pop-shuvs, and so on.

What sets the Skate franchise apart from its competitors is that performing tricks is all about timing rather than button combinations. To grind a rail you simply ollie onto it, but you have to time your jump accurately. Playing with just the remote might be easier than the "flick it" analog stick controls of the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 games.

As well as Skate It handles with just the remote, it's the balance board compatibility that really makes it stand out. You won't be able to completely abandon the remote -- the A button is still used to push. With the board turned sideways, like a real skateboard would be, there are four zones you can lean into. Leaning left or right will steer, and putting your weight forward or back will lift the skateboard into a manual. This is where the learning curve kicks in, as it takes some time for your body to figure out how much weight to apply.

For tricks, the balance board has been divided into six zones. A quick push of pressure on these areas will hop your virtual board into the air and perform a trick. These are mapped to parts of the balance board that make sense. To do an ollie, just bounce on the tail end of the board like you would in real life. All of the tricks found in the original Skate for PS3 and 360 can be triggered with the Wii balance board.

Complicated ....but could be nice if u get used to the controls...

I don't like the idea of buying another accessory to get the most out of some Wii games.

And I really don't like the idea of buying Wii Fit to get the most out of some Wii games.

the system sounds cool, but i just don't like the graphics. i mean, give me some eye candy ea. why are developers so lazy :(

Holy shit!

It's like a balance board version of

I never want to hear about Wii games forcing dumbed down control schemes again. :lol

Looks like an n64 game and removes the control scheme that made skate so fantastic. Sign me up!
Woah, ease up a bit on the hyperbole there, warrior. People got banned for less around these parts.

That actually sounds pretty cool.

The balance board is much more sensitive than I thought.
5 minutes with Wii Fit would've shown you that. It can be insanely sensitive and precise, all depends on how the devs use it. (well, only two games out so far, and both do a great job of it. >_<)

The Balance board controls don't look complicated at all...

the Wiimote controls will take a miracle to pull off correctly.

but seriously though who the hell wants to play a skateboarding game on a peripheral like that? What a gimmick.
joke, because mods have been a bit too trigger-happy lately :(

Looks insanely complicated and awesome at the same time. If this scheme really works, I might buy the balance board and this just out of curiosity. :)

I actually compliment them on not trying to dumb it down.

Now it's just a matter of making it work and not overdoing it and end up TOO complicated.

I like the look of the game, but the controls do look fucking complicated. Not too big of a skateboarding fan, too. Ah well, we'll see.

Ugh. Can I just have Skate 2 please?
It's EA. I'm sure they'll turn it into a yearly franchise. Two versions, tailored to the respective platforms (Wii/others). Or at least that's the plan iirc.

The Wiimote controls look insanely complicated, although maybe it is intuitive when you actually play. The balance board version looks like it could be fun, but I am definitely not paying $130 total to play this.

The Wii remote controls actually look really intuitive. I'm not sure why people think they're so complicated. You basically move the remote as if it were the board. Not sure about BB controls, though.

I already have Skate on 360 but this version sounds so different that I will probably pick it up. From what I've heard in the video interview, they are also adding other cities.

That's me reading the topic:

Controls:

"Aha, cool balance board controls. Seems tricky, but it could work."

"Ugh, I'm not some kind of escape artist, EA. Does this kinda hurt to perform those?"

Graph.... *closing window*

After I breathed deeply for a couple of minutes, I was able to type this. :D

The whole nollie thing doesn't make much sense on the balance board setup. Well, the whole scheme is kinda crazy, I quess it just makes sense if you want to kinda feel like you are on skateboard but nollie heels sure as hell don't frontfoot to make it spin :lol. Actually, the side "buttons" would be way more reasonable if they were reversed, so kickflips would be done by pressing tail and then the upper side of the balanceboard (front foot) and so on...

Why don't you buy a skateboard and see for yourself if it suits you -- basically the balance board becomes your board. :D

I will probably skip this though, I already skate to work whenever possible, would probably feel weird to do it at home.

The balance board controls don't seem right. CB and EF should be switced around

You kick flip with your back foot? I think maybe you're looking at the board backwards.

I listened to the Gamers With Jobs podcast today and they had a nice interview with someone from the dev-team on this game, talking mainly about the controls. Sounded well thought out to me!

Those Balance Board controls look really nice. I'll have to pick this up. The six zones for tricks could be tough to get right away though. Luckily WiiFit toned my core, I'll fuck that shit up!

I used to skate when I was a kid and they balance board controls seem pretty intuitive to me, however I can see how people who've never skated might find it somewhat complicated. I'm buying this day one along with the balance board (and or wii fit). Is the balance board sold separately from wii fit?

When I would skate, I would kick down with my toes to kickflip and kick towards the top with my heel to heelflip. I'm sure that's how it should be.

No, he is right. Unless you should be standing on regular stance with your front foot on the ollie button, which KINDA makes sense, actually. I thought that you would use your back foot to perform an ollie (you would be standing goofy on the pic with your back foot on A).

Wait, how do you perform a 360 shoveit without dislocating your wrist?
You are supposed to draw those circles and such with your Wiimote

It does seem like the controll layout is for a goofy stance, but then your back would be to the TV wouldn't it?
