Skincare-age: What is your routine?

I'm pretty crazy about skincare. I work hard to keep my skin as ph-balanced and happy as possible.

My routine changes depending on the season and if/when I discover new products. As of right now, it's like this:

Morning:

Cleanse my T-zone only with this:

Moisturize face and neck with this:

Moisturize under and around eyes with this:

Then I put on my makeup.

Evening:

Remove makeup with this: (unless it's waterproof makeup, in which case I use Lancome Bi-Facil)

Cleanse makeup remover residue with this:

Moisturize with this:

Moisturize under and around eyes with this:

Once a week I make a scrub with olive oil, honey, and sugar, and exfoliate with it, then leave it on for 10 minutes as a mask. Sooooo good.

...

My goodness, Cloud. You are hardcore. Like SUPER hardcore.

I wash my face in the morning with Neutrogena Deep Clean Cleanser:

Use Olay moisturizer: (15 SPF)

Sometimes I use an exfoliating scrub and Burt's Bees Night Cream w/ Clary Sage (was a random gift), but I feel completely inadequate compared to your routine. :/

I don't wear make-up really, so it's not so bad, but now that I'm in my 30s I wonder if I should be making more of an effort. How's the Lancome working out for you? I've always been curious.

once a day, that's it

Had a real bad acne problem a few years ago and turned out a large contributor was all the products I was using on my face: washes, scrubs, moisturizers, hydroxy acids, etc.

Nothing flash, just exfoliate with something fairly course and wash with a neutral face wash on alternating days, and moisturise. I shave like twice/thrice a week, and use aftershave balm.

That's it.

It's interesting to me that many guys seem to be really conscious/proactive about skin care now. Actual routines/products, etc. Kind of endearing really. I always thought you all were missing out on the fuzzy pleasure of a face scrub/good moisturizer. :)

- Baking Soda with water to clean pores
- Glycerin soap (as pure as I can get)
- Baby Lotion.

It's inexpensive, and does the same thing all the $40 crap people buy in this thread does. It's like people who buy Crest White Strips, when the only thing in them that whitens the teeth is Hydrogen Peroxide. When you can just buy from for $5 at the store and use it as a mouth rinse and have sparkling white teeth in two weeks.

A bath with "dirt soap" (does that thing exist outside my country?) and Aluminium Acetate once a day and call it a day. I have baby skin on my 21 yo face.

I do a baking soda scrub every morning (baking soda + water in a cup to create a paste). I follow up with a witch hazel toner and conclude with Neutrogena's ageless intensives tone corrective moisture SPF 30. Also, once a week I use a sulfur masque.

If you really want to get rid of acne you must change your diet. I have been taking two supplements. Miracle Reds and Green Vibrance everyday with my smoothies and my skin hasn't had a pimple since and my skin has a glow to it. This is the best it has been in a really long time. The only other time I can think of is when I used to use Proactiv but I stopped using it because it stopped working. Also, I prefer to not use a lot of chemical/unnatural stuff now a days.

Water, twice a day. Nothing else, and I've been doing that for almost ten years, never have had any problems with it.

If I do use soap my face gets really dry and I have to use some cream to moisten it or else it's gonna be itchy for a couple of hourse before the natural skin oils kick in.

Still use moisturizer during the winter months. Icy winds beats a face like crazy.

Face washer in the shower. Bare minerals dry skin moisturizer afterwards. That's it.

I'll put makeup on in the morning. Bare minerals stuff as well. And my skin is amazingly soft. The nicest it's ever been in fact.

Just water in the shower. I fail at the whole skincare thing but I got lucky. It'll probably bite me in the ass later.

For shaving, Art of Shaving Ocean Kelp Kit
For cleansing, Lab Series Scrub twice a week, Malin + Goetz Grapefruit Cleanser all other days
For moisturizing, D.R. Harris Milk and Cucumber Roses and Jack Black Double Duty Moisture
For the eye cream, Baxter of California eye cream at night, Kiehls Eye Alert in the morning
For a skin serum, Jack Black Protein Booster
In the shower, I use Menscience Advanced Body Scrub

I also got something called First Aid Beauty Hydrating cream and sometimes I use a toner but I think that stuff does nothing.

Man some of you guys use a fuck ton of products. Sounds counter-intuitive to me to be putting 10 different chemical products on your face every day to have a nice skin.

face soap and mosturizer during winter does the job for me...

How's the Lancome working out for you? I've always been curious.

Haha, yeah :) Skincare is kind of a hobby of mine, I'm constantly buying and trying out new things and changing my routine. Actually, as far as Lancome goes, I'm really happy with the eye cream but I've already stopped using the Visionnaire... it's just not rich enough for my dry skin. Lancome is so pricy, but it was fun to try (I got both as a gift).

Now at night time I'm using the night version of that Nivea moisturizer. Can't say enough good things about the Nivea Pure and Natural line! It was published in a tabloid that Kate Middleton uses it and they were flying off the shelves here for a while, haha :P

I use CeraVe hydrating cleanser to clean my face and CeraVe moisturizing lotion after.

Then I use clindamycin lotion and Retin-A at night. I alternate between the 2 every night.

I've always experienced an improvement in facial skin tone without fail when I follow the protocol below.

  • Stay out of the sun
    • Includes "cloudy" days
  • Diet
    • Limit daily caloric intake (~2000/day is my personal number)
    • Clean eating
      • Chicken breast
      • Sardines (in water, not olive oil)
      • Fruits (dark berries - blackberries, blueberries)
      • Vegetables
      • Plain rice for carbs
      • Limit liquid intake to water only
      • No fast food whatsoever
      • No "diet" sodas or flavored drinks
  • Exercise
    • Daily 15-20 minute run on treadmill at a pace fast enough to induce a good sweat
      • More is not better time-wise (resist the temptation); I pick up the speed if I don't feel worked enough by the end
    • 30 minute strength training session afterwards
  • Direct facial care

The main points on this list are in the order of their importance (all are important).

Apparently, as it stands one in four men utilize some form of facial skincare product or other. I agree that that 75% is missing out.

I have some back and chest acne and I'm finding it pretty darn annoying.

My face stays clear now although I used to have pretty bad acne on it.

Does anybody have suggestions on what should help?

Pretty simple:

-Wash face with washcloth in the shower
-I use some sort of green tea shampoo and conditioner. Not every day, mind you, but on days where I actually have to see people. My hair is incredibly soft and gets great reviews (4 stars on Yelp). Deal with it, anti-shampoo people.
-Then I while my face is still damp, I use clearasil acne cream.
-Follow that up with Eucerin moisturizing cream.
-Cold or lukewarm water splashed on the face
-Pat face dry with towel

I have some acne, but it's very small and not very noticeable. This is mostly due to working in production/factory/warehouse jobs that are dirty, dry and cold. And sometimes being lazy and not following my routine.

At night, it's virtually the same:
-No shower unless I didn't take one in the morning before work.
-Wash face with washcloth
-clearisil acne cream.
-go to sleep.

Works well enough for me.

Can someone explain to me what the hell toner does?

Facial-Toner.jpg

I started using it after a girl left it in my bathroom and my skin looked great. Then for no reason after 4 years of use I quit and now I realize how greasy my skin is. WTF is it?

Back when we had the hurricane here in NY and lost power for a while, I noticed my skin improved dramatically. So I began messing with my diet to see what it was exactly. It seems if I eat too much dairy or too much omega-6 I start to break out a little. So yea, I've cut back on dairy and eat salmon a few times a week and my skin looks great. I work outside in the cold, so my face does get dry I'll use extra virgin coconut oil as a moisturizer after I get out of the shower. Works great, smells even better.

I just try to use a cleansing-scrub in the shower. But, I only take a shower once every two days. I don't have bad acne at all just the same red patches of tiny ace on both of my cheeks.

Anyone know what I could do to get rid of this? If I get rid of this and get my teeth fixed I would finally be able to fulfill my inner-casanova.

Dial soap+shampoo on everything.

But my face always "feels" dirty. I really need to start taking better care if myself because feeling dirty even though I shower everyday sucks and takes a toll on my self esteem.

routine is water from the shower, everyday only once a day. no soap or anything. shave with water or dry with an electric shaver.

Guess I should mention no acne, backne, and generally told I smell good and my hair looks and feels better to me since I stopped using shampoo about a year ago. I use tea tree shampoo basically as a body wash but not to wash my face or hair.

Face wash daily:

John Masters Organics Rose Foaming Face Wash (link)

Body:

Phenome All Over Wash (link)

I also use Kiehl's Facial Fule Moisturizer (link).

That's it for keeping it clean.

Fuck my skin. I have never had horrid acne. But once I get a zit, the hyperpigmentation will not go away. Such bullshit. Nothing helps it.

Yeah, Witch Hazel applied to the face using a cotton ball in circular motion after shaving and before bed with a non-colloidal (non-pore plugging) facial moisturizer afterward is the most effective treatment of mixed/oily skin I've used. Better than a million other products I've tried when I still had breakouts and bouts with bad skin. Cheap, too. Helps to change your diet from heavily sugary and oily foods and cutting back on dairy products. After a week or two, there's a huge improvement that can be sustained if you're regular about cleaning. Use Dove or other lighter soap in the shower with a single pass of an exfoliation scrub about twice a week. Has worked great for years.

I have super bad Eczema and my hands look pretty much like the Thing from Fantastic Four, but red.
The amount of lotions and potions I have to put on them pre and post wash is annoying as fuck.

What guys do you reccomend for puffy eyes and black circles under the eye, would be great if its something I could in store and not online.

Sleep with your head elevated. I've read that it helps. That is not proof or anything, but there it is.

Steroid creams to combat my seborrhoeic dermatitis.

It sounds worse than it really is. I basically looked flushed/sunburn all the time. I guess it beats acne, and I feel fortunate that I made it out of my teens without any acne scarring.

Haha. I'm always tempted, but the damned stuff is so expensive. I confess I have about 3 different face mask thingies (clay, mint and pineapple of all things). I think it's fun, but I'm just too cheap to go for the pricey stuff. I hear Clinique is good. Maybe I'll ask for that for Christmas (since I generally can never think of anything I really want)(Maybe the Lancome? :P).

Face wash is definitely more common these days, but I still feel like there's still a lot of negativity/judgement towards guys that have lotion or even a single face item over the basics of soap. I don't want you guys sucked into the same crappy sit as us (constant fear of aging, beauty, etc.) and thus sort of suckered into over buying these kinds of products, but some of it is nice and fun.

Sleep with your head elevated. I've read that it helps. That is not proof or anything, but there it is.

I've also found that if you really want to avoid puffy eyes, DON'T SLEEP FACE DOWN. Sleeping face down is my most comfortable position, but by the gods does it puff up the face. :(

I have never had issues with acne. I shower once a day, I guess I don't even really put soap on my face, just rinse it off with hot water and whatever shampoo may trickle down when I wash my hair. Yes, I use soap on the rest of my body. I do not wash my face before bed.
