Skylanders 4 to be announced on April 23rd

Now, as a matter of fact, during Toy Fair there was some leaked product images from Mega Bloks, resulting in us finding out that there was a character named "Ranger" who appears to match the new character on the right.

this one, right?

can't wait to see if they will really implement vehicles too

Oh many kids will be all over this.

We've got so many skylanders at the moment we are running out of space to store them.

My son dropped out for a little bit and was really into LEGOs, but is at an all time high right now. We just beat Swap Force yesterday and he keeps talking about what new things they'll do in this years game. We're ready.

I just hope there is more to do post game aside from redoing entire levels and the arena.

The game needs;

1. Longer than the previous games. 2 and 3 were too short, 1 had the right amount of length.

2. More post game stuff. 1 and 2 sorta had this, 1 mostly with the heroic challenges, but there needs to be more aside from arena stuff.

3. Jump attacks. Jumping is a good start, but attacking in the air needs to come next, the 3DS versions already do this.

4. Skippable cutscenes. It ticks me off that I have to wait 5-10 minutes to get in-game and playing when the game replays a cutscene that you already saw when trying to be in the hub, the same cutscene that played on startup into the hub plays EACH time you go to the hub, and on following times, you can skip them, but only after the game finishes loading.

5. PS3 version needs serious work, the game is so blurry, but it looks great when you go to an upgrade station, the character shows up on screen in HD glory, but when you leave, it feels like looking at a smudged TV screen.

6. Bug fixes. Glitches. All of it needs to be gone. I have had many a gamebreaking bug/glitch over these games, only on the console versions mind you, the 3DS versions are well done. In Spyro's adventure, a quest item wouldn't spawn, in Giants a movable block refused to move that needed to be moved to continue the level, and in Swap Force, entering a certain arena on a certain level made the screen turn green and glitch out, requiring a reset.

One is my favorite but I feel that the 3rd suffers from trying too hard with the trophies just like Dead Space 3. I mean making you play through the game essentially 4 times is pretty annoying.

Man, this is another series that I'd really want to get more into if it didn't release every year. I liked the first one, messed with Giants a little... and then after that I'm just left in the dust. Collecting toys isn't fun when I know they release more of them faster than I can buy the first groups.

I understand why they do it though. If I was younger, I'd probably be all over it regardless.

I bought one of each element with the first game and don't add upon that. I bought a cool looking Giant for the 2nd game and my gf bought me a SwapForce guy but other than that, I stick with what I got and it seems fine. The main/only draw back is I can't open all the special movement side areas that come with the different SwapForce guys but I'm fine.

It is a little costly, not going to deny it; but you just got to be smart about the guys you get.

Well there is a counter in Toys'r'us website teasing "Something Big is coming to Skylands!" that will expire in 9 hours.

Could this be related to the announcement? Something Big? Maybe the return of the Giants.

I would expect that this will coincide with the announcement, which is apparently this evening. This site says that TRU in NY is giving away Soom Stone starting at 4pm EST and the event is after that, so the timing seems about right.

My biggest hope for the series is 4 player action. Other than that, I'm sure my kid will love whatever they do.

First leaked image from a French In stage am account (now taken down)

Seems like a new portal..and something else. The new characters seem cool.

In the case the new portal is mandatory (and by the looks of it, it looks like it is) hopefully is backwards compatible with Swap-Force.

Hopefully, the game looks and plays as great as Swap-Force (on PS4) if not better.

It seems confirmed from that pic that weapons are swap-able items. Had a feeling that might be where they went since the past swap force idea (ie to switchable items and weapons)

Kind of hard to tell but the gold lion like creature looks pretty cool. It should be interesting to see how an item switch mechanic works and how they plan to price accessories like that. I guess it was only a matter of time to Activision apes the power disc stuff from infinity.

Hopefully we get a trailer from the announcement.

Yeah, totally looks like you can switch weapons...not looking forward to a new portal though :/

Can i play these games without buying additional plasticcharacters?

Starter packs come with three characters (and the portal). That is enough to play the game and beat it. If you want to access every single area in the game, you will need one of each element (and one of each movement type of SwapForce for that game).

ALL Skylanders from the first and second game work on the latest game, SwapForce. But none of the SwapForce labeled guys work on the first two games. The back of each additional figure actually says what games they will be compatible with.

Heck, I don't think you even need all of the different elements to Platinum, 1000/1000 the games.

What the heck is this? Looks like crystal things which seems to be the running theme, but..a skull? And the Magic logo?

Officially, the new game is going to be revealed at 7PM EST which is when the embargo is also ending, so...i guess we'll know everything then.

looks like something you can "trap" in this new little jail attached to the portal, I bet those are collectible artifacts (sold in blind packs) - when placed in this little jail the skylanders can draw power from it ... like a rock skylander would get magic power with this purple skull .... i guess

I'm surprised there weren't more leaks. 10 minutes til we should get some new info. I can't decide if I'm going to tell my kid about it tonight or wait til closer to launch like I usually do. He's still 8, and not the most patient...

Just got into the series at the swap force level and we've already bought probably between 40-50 characters overall. Not at all ashamed to say I've enjoyed playing the gane with my son but then again I'm not exactly looking forward to buying another 40-50 characters plus a new portal and weapons and maybe vehicles!? haha

Description from the Toys R Us page:

Skylanders(R) is redefining the toys-to-life phenomenon with yet another ground-breaking innovation, Skylanders Trap Team(TM). In previous Skylanders games, we brought physical toys to life inside the game. With Skylanders Trap Team, we are reversing the magic by bringing characters out of the game, into physical "Traps" that kids can take with them, effectively bringing Life to Toys. In Skylanders Trap Team, Kaos continues his ongoing quest to rule over Skylands. He has discovered the location of the legendary Cloudcracker Prison -- a fortress built entirely out of the magical substance Traptanium(TM) and home to Skylands' most nefarious baddies. In an attempt to build his own army of foes, Kaos blows up the prison, releasing the most wanted villains and blasting shards of Traptanium to Earth in the form of Traps. Now it's up to Portal Masters to recapture all of the escaped villains using powerful Traptanium Traps and defeat Kaos before it's too late! Skylanders Trap Team introduces a ground-breaking innovation that lets Portal Masters "trap" the most wanted villains in Skylands and then play as them in the game in the battle for good. The game offers an unprecedented new addition to the game's play pattern in the form of Traptanium Traps. When this new type of toy is placed directly into the Traptanium Portal(TM), Portal Masters can "capture" a variety of special villains from the game and magically transport them from Skylands into the real world.

Beenox for PS4/Xbone? WHo developed Swap Force? That was far and away the best Skylanders yet.

Oh, and this twist doesn't really excite me. I like buying and collecting the Skylanders, but I have no desire to spend real world money to collect a bunch of digital creatures.

Swap Force was Vicarious Visions' baby.

I honestly don't get the premise. Anyone care to explain?
tl;dr- all the characters still work, no new level increase, new smash attacks from jumping and the ability to play as villain characters, using the "trap" crystals. (one of each Skylander type)

Toys for Bob has a really huge task ahead of them after the lackluster reception for Giants and how incredibly well made Swap Force was.

My 4 year old was grinning ear to ear though during that trailer.

This crystal trap thing seems like a really bad cash grab though, They better be real cheap.

Yeah. I also wonder how, since you will need multiple crystals of the same type to catch all baddies, you're supposed to be able to tell what bad guy is on which crystal when you want to call in a specific one.

I need to learn more about these crystals, because they seem like the most blatant "cash grab" aspect of a franchise that has always walked a fine line.

The Tomato Gun dude and the Raptorcopter dude look super fun to play as.

Sad it looks like they've settled in on requiring a new portal for every new game, was hoping Swap Force's updated portal was a one-time deal.

Yeah Im thinking its you need the element crystal of the character you want to trap?

And Kaos has his own? YOU KNOW they are totally going to be blind packs.

According to the VentureBeat article, it's not as cash-grabby as feared:

For a $75 starter pack, you get a new portal, two characters, and two traps. The traps have read/write memory, so you can store villains on them. In fact, you can store more than one villain in a trap. However, you can only have one villain playable and active within a trap.

Especially since this could have been some kind of add on that plugged into another USB port.

Chopper looks awesome... and I'm glad it's not a kart racer.

According to the VentureBeat article, it's not as cash-grabby as feared:

Hmm, I suppose we'll see how many each can store, and what they will cost, etc. Either way, they are forcing me to spend money on something else that is much lamer than character figures. The Disney Infinity power discs really inspired them in the worst way.

As TFB are back on the Wii version, am I the only one thinking they've gone back to that as the baseline? Looks worse than Swap-Force which Vicarious did.

But who's doing the 3DS version? I'm betting on Vicarious also as they did the original on 3DS, and actually have worked on all three games in full on one version or the other, even TFB only had a supporting role in SF.
