Skyrim is PC Gamer's #1 Game of All Time

The Skyrim hate on here is ridiculous. I don't agree with it being the best game ever but it's still a nice game. The game is still at fourth place in the Steam player count stats so clearly people are enjoying it.

you got it all wrong, most people liked skyrim. but putting skyrim as the best PC game of all time is just ridiculously delusional

Awful combat
Simplistic laundry list quest design
Shallow RPG mechanics
Repetitive dungeons
Level Scaling
Virtually zero impact on the world...

But hey, it is pretty!

All this is simply undeniable. The game is paper thin, and whilst on the surface its both impressive in scope and immersive, after a while the world and all that immersion just start shedding away. Especially when it comes to the last point on that list; becoming the leader of every organization in the land felt incredibly silly and contradictory, so did the main quest-line not making any difference on the world or the so called civil war, which is possibly the worst quest line in a big name RPG I have ever played.

It's just not a good game.

Should probably be lower TBH
Same with Skyrim too

Opinions are awesome. But it's no denying that Quake and DOOM did a lot, they're classics. Therefore I personally feel that they belong somewhere between #20 - #1 at LEAST. I'm also shocked that there's no Quake II involved (or is there?). I loved Skyrim, but I think that's a bit much. I enjoyed Dishonored too, but #40? Really? Oh well, lol.

Yeah, but most of those #1 games candidates would have a reasonable case for being on top. Skyrim doesn't. By a long shot.

Yeah. I think Skyrim is a good, maybe even great game. But this is the PC, where "great" puts you alongside scores and scores of other games spanning decades. I just don't see how a game with as many shortcomings as Skyrim tops a list that includes every potential candidate that's ever been.

I loved even Vanilla Skyrim (there should be a tom cruise character mod). It's one of my favorite games and i have no problem with this choice.

Skyrim was awesome. I'm not sure its #1 but definatly in my top three.

Skyrim was released almost two years ago and is still going strong. Gaming sites like Gamespot and IGN still post Skyrim articles beacuse people still click and watch them. Thats staying power and Skyrim is the RPG of the generation for me.

How is this even right? I mean, list wars are list wars, but even in terms of the Elder Scrolls series as a whole, Skyrim isn't at the top.

What a joke. What an absolute joke.

Skyrim is definitely a good game. Best of all time would be a stretch for me, but to each his own. I'd hate to have to make this list :P.

I barely played Daggerfall for the first time a year ago.

It's not that long ago that I played it again as well, and it was still super janky, huge, identikit fantasy world. No matter how many square kilometers there was, large but meticulously crafted gameworlds of earlier time like Ultima VII/Serpent Isle already take the prize.

It's all IMHO, of course, but I think Elder Scrolls only got really good at Morrowind. Hell, I think blockly Phlan of D&D PoR felt more alive than Daggerfall.

Actually, we should probably make a thread of remembering good old RPGs of an earlier age. They're all probably on GoG or something anyway so someone might take a look at them again.

"PC Gamer". Not "PS3 Gamer".

The amount of people salty over the game's popularity is just as annoying as anything else. It's a decent enough game, although I would put it behind Morrowind and way behind Baldur's Gate II, which is my personal pick for the so-called "best PC game evar!1!" spot.

I don't think something like, say, Deus Ex would have been as divisive. It wouldn't be everyone's favorite, but it's something a lot of people could see the logic behind.

It's tough to see the reasoning behind Skyrim when so much of it was just so average.

They aren't trying to pick what the most amount of people would agree with, though. They are voicing an opinion. Just because an opinion is different than most people's doesn't make it any less valid.

Skyrim is a great game. Not the top of my list, but then again, I'm sure most people wouldn't agree with my personal #1 either. (Crimson Skies, for the record). Opinions stop being opinions when you change it to appease everyone around you.

wtf is this shit, the site automatically redirects me to http://de.bethblog.com
ie the main page of the german blog.

I want to read the original article... wtf... o.O

just out of curiosity, do people outside of germany get redirected with direct links to the german blog?

Same thing here, looks like everyone in Germany gets redirected. Pretty sure it is because of Wolfenstein. I can't even access the main Bethesda site, always get redirected to the German one.

After that infamous Dragon Age 2 review I don't know how that would surprise me in any way.
Still, I'm so glad Kickstarter exists or I would've lost all hope for the CRPG genre.

cannot be that simple they have a wolfenstein article on the german blog.

someone probably thought it was a clever idea to redirect everyone.
"Lets help the german fools who click on english links by mistake."

Skyrim is one of the worst rpgs I have ever played. I rather play Xenogears episode 2 than that shit.

I certainly disagree on Skyrim at #1, but the way PC Gamer does its Top 100s is quite unconventional (at least in the UK mag, in all previous years). The basis for entry is just what they have actually liked playing over the last 12 months, rather than a very academic discussion about HL1's contribution to the FPS genre or whatever. TF2 came in at first once, because they had been playing that all the time that year. There's an Italitan-themed football manager game from the late nineties that gets in most years, because Graham Smith, the UK version editor, became absolutely obsessed with it at the time and it still means a lot to him personally.

Even with the very informal ranking system, it really sounds bizarre having a game as dull as Skyrim at first place.

I get why people love bethesda games but they're far too shallow to be any where near a "best of all time" list.

Also, for such a big studio, their games should look better/play better.

First they get rid of the podcast that was actually good, and now this? Oh PCG...

Agreed on losing the PC Gamer UK podcast. Fortunately this forced the guys to start the crate and crowbar podcast and it seems like it will be even better with some of the corporate shackles removed from the discussions.

Lots of hyperbole going on in this thread. I think a majority of us can at least agree that Skyrim is a good game and all, but far from being the best PC game of all time.

It wouldn't matter what they put as the best game of all time. That's the problem with these lists, they're too subjective. And I agree that putting it up as best game ever is stupid, but I still think that there's too much Skyrim hate going on here (may be a vocal minority, but it's still annoying).

Remember that six month window after Skyrim was released that The Internet thought it was the best thing ever? A few videos from popular YouTube celebrities later....

My experience with Skyrim was so awful I literally can't understand what people see in the game.

Yeah I hated it day 1. I have integrity man

I can't tell if hipsters are just upset that a AAA mainstream game got #1 versus their super niche crpg or hardcore Dark Souls and it's leaving them feel bitter. Even if you don't feel Skyrim is #1, I certainly don't, the responses in this thread just come off as hate purely on account of skyrim's critical acclaim, widespread appeal, and commercial success. It almost seems a game's hate is at least somewhat proportional to a game's critical praise and commercial success. I know full well games like Two Worlds or Conan don't garner even a fraction of the amount of vitriol something like Skyrim does, despite being much much worse. So basically, who gives a shit if they gave Skyrim #1. I wouldn't have given it #1, but I don't let it bother me to the extent you guys seem to be bothered by it.
