Skyrim is PC Gamer's #1 Game of All Time

The saddest part about this is that people who enjoyed Skyrim keep defending it because the level of hatred towards it is so high, when there is really no way you can call it the greatest game of all time with a straight face even if you think it was the dog's bollocks.

This is great. This thread is the precise reason they do these lists. Discussion/controversy/clicks/magazine sales/etc.

This is no different to best albums or music artists of all time lists - what's newer always features high, then sinks and finds its level with time.

I don't, in fact I said quite the opposite.

I have no issue with people not liking Skyrim or thinking it doesn't belong to be #1, hell I'm one of those people.

I never claimed everyone who dislikes Skyrim dislikes it solely on it's popularity, that would be incredibly silly. I even applauded some of the more thought out criticism towards Skyrim so I I'm not quite sure where your coming from.

Well now I'm confuzzled!

joke is on them, I didn't click anything nor have I bought a magazine!

I personally recommend subscribing to them. One of the best gaming-related magazines left out there. I received this issue a few days back...knew it would spark this kind of thing. I know I was personally pissed by a lot of the choices. But just imagine how difficult of a process this would be, especially with a group of gamers...yikes. No way everyone will ever be happy.

I really enjoyed Skyrim. I put close to 300 hours into it, but by no means do I have the perspective to place it as the No. 1 PC game of all time considering I've only been playing PC games since 2010. So, yeah, it's likely not the best PC game of all time. Secondly, it's only been out for like two years? Generally, with these kinds of lists you should give a few years, five years or even a decade before considering a game that game out that not long ago the No. 1 spot.

That being said, I really enjoyed Skyrim. I understand people's dislike of the combat, but it's probably one of my favorite games this generation. To each his own I guess.

I really doubt it'd spark vitriol if the number isn't Skyrim, like say Dark Souls.

2 things.

1. It's their opinion, not yours and its one magazine's list. This doesn't mean anything in the grand scheme.

2. What game of that scope would put as number 1?

1. Sure, but they can still be called out for having bad opinions.

2.
Battlefield 2
Deus Ex
Diablo 2
Doom
Civilization 4
Counter Strike
Half Life 1/2
Knights of the Old Republic
a Monkey Island
Quake
System Shock 2
Starcraft
Tie Fighter
World of Warcraft

I think it's hard to determine anything less than 5 years old as best of all time without the perspective time adds, but if they wanted something new they should have chosen something like Minecraft or Dota 2.

Skyrim? Really? Decades filled with great PC games and they picked Skyrim. I mean I understand that unless they picked Bloodlines as number one I would still disagreed, but Skyrim? Skyrim over games like Deus Ex, Half Life, Command and Conquer, Starcraft, Warcraft, Fallout, Diablo, and so on. I was too lazy to type all the sequels out so when I say Warcraft for example I mean the series and you can just pick on. Talk about losing all you credibility in my eyes.

I would go into a rant about how flawed Skyrim truly is, but others have already covered it. As others have said the game is as wide as an ocean, but only ankle deep sums it up nicely.

lolol

wrap it up boys

let's ditch this universe

edit: by the way, it's fine to disagree, but if there really is such a thing as bad opinion and this is it

I mean, yeah, the ending is pretty cool. Visiting Sovngard, the guardian at the bridge, the halls of Sovngarde... but Morrowind, that came out ten years before Skyrim was an epic journey all along. In Skyrim it felt more like Visit 1000 caves and kill dozens of Draugrs while in Morrowind you battled demons and gods. The story was way more interesting in Morrowind to me.
And that big stupid mountain or these weak dragons weren't as impressive as they looked in the trailers. Skyrim looks like a failure when you compare it to its prequels.

Since people mentioned Doom, it wouldn't be in the top 5. For its time it was mind-blowingly amazing, but that's more because of the engine, and how it opened up 3D gaming.

If you get past the first 10 levels and play through the whole thing, it gets kinda old.

I really doubt it'd spark vitriol if the number isn't Skyrim, like say Dark Souls.

Dark Souls isn't mainstream enough to receive vitriol. Give it five years when Dark Souls 4 gets a 96 metacritic, takes away permanently losing souls, and goes on to sell 10+ million copies and you'll be sure to expect an untold level of hate you've never seen for a game before, even if by all accounts Dark Souls 4 is relatively a pretty good game.

And much worse than the older ones

Ehh Skyrim would not be my 1 maybe not even in the top 10 BUT they could have picked worse, much worse so i am "ok" with it skyrim is not a bad game :)

Not bad = best PC game ever PC stay losing

it's not even the best elder scrolls game and the interface is atrocious on pc

pc gamer pls

also there's like literally a hundred better pc games

I haven't played Skyrim yet. I know I should just to see what it's all about... but man, it just looks so entirely drab and unappealing.

I think I would have agreed with or at least understood this placement, if I had stopped playing the game in time, say 15 hours in, which might be something the editors, already busy and overburdened with the games that would follow, did.

Couldn't stand Skyrim on PS3. I doubt having a stable framerate and better graphics improves the experience so much on PC to warrant it being called "best of all time."

If someone walked up to me and told me their favorite game of all time was Skyrim I would accept this as a legit answer and move on. I don't really agree, but it's just an opinion. It isn't like they chose Assassin's Creed 3 or something.

And much worse than the older ones

But that raises a bigger question. Does a game, that's by all accounts relatively good, deserve untold amounts of hate that far exceeds bottom of the barrel trash like Kayne and Lynch or Resident Evil 6? I'd much rather see criticism that more truthfully represents the game, not "lol Dark Souls 4 is da worst game ever and a piece of trash" anytime it gets mentioned in a thread When even if you may view it as a huge disappointment compared to what came before, if you judge it objectively it's certainly not an awful game all things considered.

Fuck.

Skyrim's fun, but best game of all time? PC Gamer is crazy. Even with mods, Skyrim is still too shallow to really deserve that spot, and the vanilla version is atrocious on a PC.
Mass Effect 2.
MOTHERFUCK.

I think Dark Souls would spark vitriol for other reasons, mainly because the PC port is terrible.
Yeah, Dark Souls is an amazing game, but it's definitely not an amazing PC game.

If we're including the modded version with a controller, then Dark Souls probably has a spot somewhere on the list, but it still probably doesn't belong within the top 10.

I was in a Barnes and Noble last year and saw a PC Gamer magazine with a Top 100 list. I remember thinking it was too heavily skewed toward newer games ('recency effect') and action games.

Maybe that's the curmudgeon in me seeping through.

This is definitely a case of editors writing for their audience instead of what they actually think right? Because I refuse to accept this decision. I put 168 hours into skyrim before considering myself done with it and it was mostly forgettable.

if that someone was payed to be a knowledgeable games critic and was actually picking the best game of all time rather than his favorite I think you'd at least challenge the legitimacy of his answer

skyrim in the grand scheme of things and pc gaming in general is crap

it wasn't even the best rpg of its year

It's like saying Twilight is better than Dracula, because the scope is bigger.

---
Nonetheless, I suggest you read this to see that landscape geometry is not the only aspect a game can have an epic scope in:

No it isn't at all. First of all, I never said the game deserved the number one spot. I'm merely asking for what it should be instead of reason complaint after complaint that it shouldn't be.

Second of all, for your analogy to work I would have needed to give a comparison. A Dracula to Skyrim's Twilight as you put it. Which I haven't done.

And third, comparing Skyrim to Twilight is ridiculous.

Holy shit, hahaha.

Most top music videos of all-time list have Thriller at number one and rightfully so. I think there was one year where MTV gave it to November Rain. Just saying.

After adding about a hundred Mods, Skyrim became interesting and actually fun to play--for me anyways.

The Vanilla version could never grab my attention in spite of its scale. The Modding community deserves that recognition.
