Skyrim on Switch seems to be based on the Special Edition

Curiosity just grabbed me with this one. So i have to ask:

What is exactly the meaning of the Switch running the old version or the "enhanced version" instead?

People do know that the "old" version was more hardware demanding (specially at launch) due to optimization reasons. The enhanced versions got polished/optimized and graphical features in it were possible to be added via modding to the old version anyway (better water shaders, shadow resolution, better foliage, etc)

So what's the debate about?

I think it would be best if Skyrim and a few key Third Parties (Resident Evil, Rocket League, etc...) have November. Mario Odyssey is slated for Oct and it will continue selling through the holidays. They can't keep the Switch on shelves anyway, so giving Third Parties a chance to shine on Switch seems like a good idea this year.

We will see but I can see Skyrim releasing in November and Xenoblade 2 being December.

You may very well be right. Just a gut feeling they will drop an announcement and that Skyrim and Rocket league are slated for December. But yeah they wouldn't release xenoblade and Skyrim same month.

People want to concern troll the Switch's hardware or shit on Bethesda for being "lazy." I think that's really it.

There has never been a debate; all evidence has pointed towards the SE for a while now. However, there is a group of people that irrationally hate Nintendo and will stop at nothing to slam it (here, that the Switch is just a portable Wii U that isn't powerful enough to run 6 year old games lolololololol.)

The sad part is that Nintendo has made a lot of bad decisions lately which they do rightly deserve to be criticized for. But the anti-fanboys are so blanket in their condemnations that those decisions get lost in the noise, giving Nintendo some cover.

Only thing I can think of is that some people would be able to smugly proclaim that the Switch is underpowered? Which as you said is idiotic since the Special edition runs much better and is less demanding.

Nice to have a thorough comparison like this to put the question to bed. Good work from Bethesda, looking forward to the launch of the game!

Not entirely sure why they aren't calling it the Special Edition. My guess is that it's because either it does have some graphical downgrades compared to PS4 and X1, Nintendo consoles never had Skyrim before, or both.

Still, though, this version is shaping up to be great. Definitely buying it Day One to both play it and support good 3rd party support on Switch.

i always just assumed it was a bespoke version that worked from the SE. say what you will of bethesda i don't think they'd just plop the 2011 version on there with motion controls and amiibo support and call it a day

Would be nice if it had mod support (going off the current build at Gamescom which didn't have a mod tab) but hey, portable skyrim is still great.

Any word on mods for this edition?

As i mentioned in the past couple Skyrim Switch threads. It does not look good as when you look at the start screen the header for mods should be right under the 'add-ons' header as it is in the PS4 and X1 version. And on the Switch version its absent. Perhaps there is a chance it will be added closer to launch. But at this moment thats a bad sign.

Also, it may be because Bethesda at E3 announced a new program for their mods and how they will work. So maybe after this is implemented the Switch will get them. So there is still always hope.

I feel compelled to drop this in every Skyrim Switch thread:

MOD SUPPORT PLEASE

Preferably similar to Xbone and not PS4 but I'll take anything.

That is all.

My guess is it's because it doesn't have mods.

Huh? Is this confirmed?

Nope

But then again, confirm is a dirty word around this game.
1st they wouldn't confirm is was an actual game rather than tech demo.
Then they wouldn't confirm Nintendo are publishing it or its Bethesda.
They won't confirm if it's vanilla or special edition.
They won't confirm its release date.
They won't confirm who's even porting it.

It's just an insane Dev cycle for such a big game (old or not).
So many outlets at gamescom were saying they are amongst the 1st to play it...because so few knew it was actually available a few weeks back at ComicCon.

Has it been confirmed that you can use the amiibo right after you start the game? I want to play through the whole game as Link.

Torn on this. I've never played Skyrim and an Xbox One X-enhanced version with mod support or a PS4 Pro version with PSVR seem like weighty counterbalances against portability. On the other hand, I find Bethesda games to be frightening timesinks and being able to play this everywhere is an incredibly attractive prospect.

I haven't played Skyrim yet. Barring any performance issues, I'll pick it up on Switch.

But again... I wish it were Morrowind :-/

Remember the days when people yearned for Zelda to go Skyrim? Well it basically did, and now you can play that, AND Skyrim on the same system, try telling folks that five years ago! :P

Huh? Is this confirmed?

Not but someone said they heard IG got the contract and when Maximum Games was asked about Extinction on Switch they said:

I’m not myself a member of Iron Galaxy, but to speak for them, I believe they have, yes, been involved directly with some Switch development.

I have the original release on steam (bought for 5 bucks I think) played a few hours and left it there. I agree with how everyone says it doesn't really seem like an immersive world , it seems huge but knee deep... Last scrolls game I played for hours was Oblivion , but then it wasn't that immersive too... I finished LoZ:BOTW , Witcher 3 recently and liked Dragons Age : Origins too, liked the Fallout 3 and didn't play 4 very much...

The point of this post is : Is a portable skyrim without any mods suitable for my tastes ? Would you guys recommend it for me ? By the way, I do like grind if it is rewarding, I am playing Monster Hunter XX Switch right now, played it for about 100 hours on 3DS and started from zero in the switch again.

Skyrim, even the Special Edition, is such a not demanding game on PC with low system requirements.

Special Edition runs perfectly on both consoles, and I couldn't see how that wouldn't run on the Switch.

You just get his equipment i think but still playing with the master sword + offhand magic spell is gonna be lots of fun.

Hopefully it can be enchanted.

I gave up in the middle of OG Skyrim, never played more than a few weeks of any TES games despite being immensely hyped for them, and I probably also will get this.

Apart from me though, I think it's sell like hot cakes regardless, probably will climb to #3 of it's releases charts if not higher. It's Skyrim mobile.

It would've been ridiculous if it was not

Indeed but many users were under the impression that it was the original 2011 build.

You'd think so but I saw a lot of doubts

In fairness to the skeptics, it's not like their doubts were unwarranted:
- the first reveal had frame drops
- the Special Edition on PS4 and XBO is only 30 fps, and the Switch is much less powerful than those
- the Switch version is not called Special Edition
- Bethesda hasn't made any comments on the subject
- No direct-feed footage to know for sure

Not to mention the countless cases of half-assed ports to Nintendo systems.

Glad to be proven wrong. Now all that remains to be seen is if the game can hold its framerate in more demanding areas and if it runs in 1080p, 900p or variable resolution in docked mode.

[EDIT] To clarify: I only have a Switch and will not buy a PS4 or XBO. But I still had doubts. Being a Wii owner tends to make one wary and jaded of third party efforts.

I'd be pumped to play Skyrim on the big screen and on-the-go if I hadn't played it before. I was addicted to that thing.

I mean, screw DQXI's 3DS/PS4 transfer, give me true on the go gaming by putting that on Switch

I was under the impression that everybody knew this and it was also the point of the game?

I mean, in all the trailers they've shown you could clearly tell it was the Special Edition version and not OG Skyrim.

I know the Switch isn't a ps4 or Xbox One, but that doesn't mean it's weak as hell. It's still the most advanced handheld out there.

Right, but again, considering that even the PS4 and XBO versions ran at 30 fps, and the reveal trailer for the Switch version had framerate issues, it wasn't completely silly to imagine the possibility that the Switch might be significantly downgraded in the looks and/or framerate department. It's great to see Bethesda did their homework though. A stable framerate with perfect framepacing and most, if not all enhancements from the Special edition is a nice surprise.

Anyone questioning the fact that there were a lot of doubts should look at some old threads.

Interesting to note that it looked like it was not the Special Edition.

No date and 360/PS3 graphics ouch.

It's weird to me that they didn't show anything about this being the "Special Edition." Is this seriously just the base version of Skyrim or am I reading into this way too much?

Is it... the special edition?
Didn't look like it.

So a straight port of the 360/PS3 versions then?

If it was Special Edition, they would have said.

No way was that trailer showing off the remastered one. Looked like a 360 game.

etc. etc. etc.

I think the absence of mods is precisely why it doesn't have the subtitle, "Special Edition."

I could have sworn I read an interview that said mod support would be included, but only allow mods that use in-game assets (so no Thomas the Train Engine).

It probably wasn't any harder to port SE over considering the Switch supports modern shaders, just dial some settings back for 1080p30 and we're good to go.

iirc there has been no indication of mod support and menu option doesn't exist in Switch edition where it does on PS4/XB1.

Also don't forget the dozens of comments calling it a 6 year old game (SE is 1 year old) and "just" a 360 game.

I remember that was an LKD rumor back in December I think. I don't think they've even mentioned mods in any official interview (mentioned as in either confirmed or denied).

Gyro aiming is also confirmed (apparently it was shown a few months ago but I just learned about it recently :P)

Very happy about that. Bow & Arrow + Slowmo makes controller combat much more bearable.

Yep, downgrades are expected. But what its often open to discussion is how far is the Switch from the XBO and how close it is to 360/Ps3/WiiU. And if it is indeed impossible to port games from PS4/XBO to Switch.

Yeah, this has all been pretty weird.
