Skyrim Special Edition - PS3 versus PS4 Graphics Comparison

No hair and cloth physics? What a fail.

There are mods for that.

Not sure if it's possible on XB1. PS4 would be not possible, i guess.

What I'm actually looking forward to on PC is just the gameplay and feel being more fluid, if they're actually just porting the Fallout 4 engine into this thing. Recently played OG Skyrim and the game feels janky as fuck compared to Fallout 4.

You get them through the Skyrim Nexus.

Ok, lets try to be realistic here.

You have to do some serious triffling with the Ini document files constantly and seriously make sure all the mods are compatible with each other to avoid game debug problems. And lastly, you need a beefy computer to run all these mods together in order to be able to come out of this with stable framerates.

ENB's are really taxing and heavy performance hitters.

It isnt just as simple as installing 1 single mod, and it all magically looks like that.

You have to have certain knowledge of what you're doing.

I feel torn when people say that skryim looked like shit. On the one hand, its absolutely true that it wasn't top of the line graphics on console at the time by any means and especially PC, and other open world games on console from this gen absolutely stomp it(and fallout 4 for that matter) into the ground...

But at the same time it was such a jump from oblivion in terms of verticality, in terms of scale and art style, and pure atmosphere that it really hid a lot of the technical deficiencies, or masked them better IMO

I've only played on 360 so i generally don't know how the PS3 version holds up but..

latest

Standing out at night, hearing the ambiance, the music, seeing the northern lights and giant planets float across the sky just makes it so much more immersive than a lot of games.

Yeah, better animations would make a huge difference. I bought the DLC for 8€ yesterday. Will finally try to finish the main quest. Played 120h and never finished the game. Always got disctracted by mods. Like every Bethesda game^^

Not really? I mean I'm not saying you're wrong about the performance hit because that's just fact. ENB = RIP framerate if you use all the bells and whistles and don't shop around. It's why I kind of roll my eyes at some of those screenarchery shots with 4k everything. Thus my recommendation of a performance ENB. But I only edited my ENB's ini 3 times and the second time was only because I forgot to change a basic setting. Most ENBs tell you what to do in the readme when you download it. The only thing you really need to worry about being incompatible with your ENB is weather mods and mods that change the lighting and again the ENB will usually tell you which if any weather/lighting mods to use with it on the download page. That is why mod authors have readmes. My ENB rarely if ever dips below 60fps (I'm using Vividian). But I'm using the performance option with DoF turned off to save me a few extra frames. I will rarely get a random plummet to 40 fps for a few seconds when entering a town (but that happened in vanilla so...). The only time you're doing a lot of tweaking to the ini is when you want day/night/interior values different from what the ENB maker intended and in that case you could just as easily install another ENB if you don't want to do that.

The knowledge of what you're doing really extends to being able to read and follow instructions.

I got that mod and i still cant find that specific hairstyle. Was it even included?

Also, this looks alright i guess, and i suppose it's a better ground to start on too if you're new to modding, but i'll be staying with my modded regular Skyrim.

Nothing amazing, but i just love the look of it.

Put my South Park refund towards this. I would have put it toward FFXV if it was out sooner, but oh well.

Excited to try the DLC for the first time, as well as siding with the Stormcloaks. Just gotta decide what race to choose now..

This will be my first time playing Skyrim. Skipped it on PS3 cause of the performance issues. I loved Oblivion though. Here's hoping it lives up to the hype :D

It does.

For example the 'mountains' look like mountains in the distance on PS3. PS4 they look more like hills with oddly growing giant trees.

Do you see what I'm getting at? It was common to not crank the draw distance on PC to ludicrous levels via config tweaks and the like when modding to avoid this.

I agree with this. The more you increase the draw distance, the more you realize that the "world" is actually very small. Filling in the trees on the hills behind Whiterun completely changes the scale of things; now you realizes the hills are only a couple hundred yards away and maybe 300 feet high, tops. It kind of diminishes the experience to know that running a mile or two from Riften to Winterhold takes you from a temperate climate to perpetual blizzard; masking that distance visually at least helps maintain some sense that you've traveled father than you actually have. I appreciate remasters that help make the world look better by updating visual effects, but if increasing the draw distance destroys the illusion of scale the game is trying to create, leave it alone.

Great post in a Sea of nonsense.

I will definitely mess with the free upgrade on PC. Once it lowers in price I will probably pick it up again for my xbox. This is the time of the semester where I just wanna lose myself in another world. Skyrim definitely isnt my favorite Elder Scrolls game, but I just love immersing myself in it's world.

I don't get this post. The object draw distance improvements on PC mean higher quality objects get drawn in further out, so that you cna see buildings, then alrge objects, then people, at far distances, vs a bloby texture and a handful of 2D sprites.

To say that improving draw distance is bad and negatively impacts a sence of scale is ridicuous, and some of the screenshots of modded Skyrim in this very thread clearly show how wrong that stance is.

I wish there was some impressions on PC version (performance mainly). I have until the release to buy the DLC at the discounted price so I get the remaster update, but if my 970 isn't able to run the game at 60 fps I don't know if I want to pay it.

Considering how well F4 runs, I wouldn't be worried.

I find it hard to believe yet more are seriously having trouble understanding the concept, it's been quite clearly explained in our posts.

Your last paragraph is quite off the mark to boot as playing with ugrid settings usually breaks the game and mods. Also as mods are usually quite taxing with higher quality textures and the like it helps to reign in the draw distance.

Bethesda themselves have even explained how they use these techniques to give the illusion of scale/distance in interviews ages back, to pretend it's nonsense is quite bizarre really. You're of course welcome to prefer the 'theme park' look as it does ultimately boil down to personal preference but let's not disregard this game's (and many others) design philosophy and principles.

So did they only add new foliage to the opening area of the game, or is this consistent throughout the world?

Pretty consistent everywhere. I was surprised by how dense the foliage is - really adds something to the atmosphere. It's bloody brilliant.

Some first impressions:
The biggest problem of this game is that a bunch of textures and models look very dated. It sometimes feels like playing Fallout 4 with imported PS3 characters. Some of the NPC armor just doesn't look good at all. I'm surprised how dated the opening scene feels. Geometry looks pretty bad as well at times - or at least in Helgen. Once you can go into the open world, the experience gets much better in my opinion. Love the new volumetric lighting - much atmosphere. Riverwood and Whiterun are gorgeous in every way possible... it's kinda weird how bad my first impression of the game was back then on the 360 and now on PS4, just because the bad opening sequence. It gradually gets better and better after that. Awesome.

There are also no mods available on PS4 at the moment - no mod option on the main menu from what I can see.

I really recommend the "Alternate Start" mod, when they do enable mods for the PS4. It always bugged me how the opening is so out of touch with the rest of the game. It's Bethesda's last true "sandbox" game, and the intro sequence is something out of Fallout 4 - very directed and it assumes a bunch of stuff about the player and his/her character.

The Alternate Start mod gives you a bunch of different options that can place you in different parts of the world, based on your background. You can even start the game as an initiate in one of the guilds.

How are the ps4 load times compared to the 360 version?

That's pretty cool.

Not impressed. Might still buy for convenience. With the hours gone into skyrim in this household, the 60 dollars is inconsequential.

Nice comparison pics, but what I would really like to know is how does the PS4 version compare with the PS4 Pro 1080p version?

The 1080p TAA image on PS4 and X1 is pretty damn good in terms of console IQ, as is. I would imagine the PS4 PRO 1080p edition would look pretty identical on a normal sized TV.

The mod is great indeed but it won't work on PS4 because it uses scripts.
is there an opinion on what the funnest combat class in this game is?

What exactly do you mean by combat class? Race? In vanilla it doesn't really matter.

I originally played this on PS3 and remember the jank well :P

The music in his game is just amazing and a huge reason why it's so good, imo. So great firing up the LE on PC last night and being taken back. Looking forward to the SE.

I think a weather mod like Vivid Weathers will look phenomenal in SSE with the new volumetric lighting and mist.
And of course a texture mod is still necessary for a good looking game.
