Sleeping Dogs is such a good game.

Great experience. It has a really coherent vision-- it obviously resembles other open world games in broad strokes but it's not afraid to go off on its own tangents and it's better for that.
 
Indeed! Probably one of my favorite games of last gen. The combat was top notch, and I really enjoyed roaming the vibrant streets of Hong Kong. I would totally love a part 2.

Edit: to go a little more in depth, I felt that the combat was an unfinished beta version of the Batman Arkham games. The combat felt slow and stiff.

Regular movement was slow as hell so driving was the go too way but I didn't care for the mechanics of that either.

Most of the main story missions were really repetitive and usually revolved around chasing someone or being chased.

I won't even mention the WOAT gunplay mechanics.

I think it's very deliberate actually and it's one of the reasons it clicks with me.
I love Arkham's combat, I won't diss that, but it reaches a point where it becomes less of a brawler and more of a mini-game and then Batman is flying all over the screen breaking a few laws of physics here and there like he has a magnet attached to each criminal.
Again, it's great, but Sleeping Dogs scratch the itch for something that feels more grounded, more like a brawl or a very good coreography. It has a very satisfying controlled pacing that never gets into the "stresfull" territory and at the same time, the hits never lose the impact, they never get banal.
 
It is GREAT. I don't like open world games, I really don't. Usually I get bored out of my mind while playing them, including Saints Row and GTA, and still, even I was hooked while playing Sleeping Dogs.

And the PS4 version is SO beautiful.

Funny how you just created this thread cuz I just started playing the definitive edition (for the first time).
Yes, this game is a gem, but for me the main points are:

-- the voice acting is awesome. The spoken Cantonese is authentic and sayings/slangs used are accurate.
-- the story is pretty cool in that you are playing both sides, and are able to choose which way to lean.

That said,

-- the driving is only marginally better than GTA
-- the fighting isn't as good as Yakuza (though still very rewarding)
-- the skills chart is very linear. Again, Yakuza does a much better job.

I haven't finished the game yet but, so far, it's very enjoyable to play!
 
Better than GTA 4 for combat and driving. Not a full combat game like Batman or Yakuza but more than serviceable for the open world genre.

Story and character more interesting and compelling than GTA 5, which got bogged down with quantity over quality.

Pour one out for United Front.

Fantastic game. Probably my favorite "western-style" open world game.

I still have the remaster waiting to be played on my PS4. Once I'm out of my backlog from the past few months I'm definitely going to jump in again.
 
Agreed! It is a shame we will never get a sequel and the studio who created this game has closed down. Wei is one of my favorite protagonists from last gen. He is much better than his GTA counterparts in terms of flexibility and growth as a character. "Wei Shen MotherFucker!!"
 
It hurts that we'll never get a sequel. I own the game on just about every platform at this point; I really wish I had the time to replay it.
 
My 2nd favorite open world game, only losing the top spot to GTA: Vice City, and that's mainly because of the setting and theme.

Sleepy Dogs has great driving and combat, and the characters are especially good.

I'm so bummed that sequel is probably never going to happen.

Also, the Halloween DLC was fantastic.
 
Sleeping Dogs is awesome, and a lot more enjoyable than the GTA games I've played. By far my favourite present day sandbox game. Got the game for PC at launch, and later I bought it again when I bought a PS4 since it included the DLCs.

I find Sleeping Dogs to be better than GTA. I played the PS3 version to completion and enjoyed every minute.

I recently purchased the definitive version on Steam and it still looks great to me. One question though, is it buggy for anyone else? This is the first game in a while that I've had to deal with multiple crashes to the desktop among other odd behaviors.
 
I'm also a huge fan of this game. I just purchased it a month or so ago when the PS4 version was on sale and I'm soooo glad I did. I need to get back to it and finish the story and dig into the DLC, but Yakuza 0 is occupying all my time currently.
 
It's a solid B-tier game. I'd put it up there with Godfather 2 and Red Faction Guerrilla for pretty good open world games last gen. RFG had god-tier multiplayer though.
 
I remember getting this game on Steam on a whim. Such a huge surprise.

I've never been a big GTA fan but this game exceeded all expectations. I enjoyed it way more than any of the gta/gta clones. Deus Ex, Tomb Raider, and this were all games that I found to be so enjoyable but didn't seem to be the hits they needed to be by Square.
 
Sleeping Dogs is the best open-world crime game ever, as far as I'm concerned. So much personality and so much fun in it, even if it doesn't have the raw scale and polish of a GTA. It nails the Hong Kong action movie feel so well.
 
Glad to see this thread.

I just purchased the Definitive Edition in a Steam sale and it's next in my backlog.

Being a huge fan of open world city games, I'm really excited to dive into this one!

....I only wish I would have picked it up sooner. I'm a little worried the outdated visuals will slightly take away from the experience (coming directly from Watch Dogs 2 & Mafia 3).
 
Alright, fine, I will play it some more. I finished the main story, so could I get some advice on whether the DLC are worthwhile and, if so, which one should I start with?
 
Got the enhanced edition when it was on sale recently on Steam. Might revisit it now I have a newer card then the first time I played it.
 
I thought it was pretty interesting. The antiquated feel made it a Chöre to play at a certain point, though. Vastly prefer GTAV and Y0.
 
My favorite open world game. I always have trouble finishing open world games, since there is always so much stuff to do, but the story and combat kept the game interesting enough for me to finish it. The whole atmosphere was great in the game and it felt really like being in Hong Kong. Only thing lacking was that there wasn't that much to do in the city, outside of the missions. Wish they were gonna improve on it in their sequel, but yeah... :<
 
Liked the game for its story and atmosphere, but found gameplay to be fairly underwhelming tbh. Felt like a mish mash of several popular AAA systems but it doesn't do anything particularly well. And I wholly dislike the Arkham style of combat.

It was so nice, however, to hear so much Cantonese, and especially Cantonese swearing in the game. Reminds me of my uni days when I hung out with my friends from Hong Kong. And I do love running around apartments to hear people yelling in their apartments in Cantonese. The atmosphere is top notch. If only they let you dine in the restaurants like the Golden Koi, that'd be excellent.

It's sad we probably won't see anything Sleeping Dogs related in the future though.
 
I bought it when it was super cheap in a PSN sale over Christmas for PS4 but haven't had the chance to play the Remastered version. The PS3 version was great but never got to finish it.
 
I have finished this game three times now. Curry fish balls brings me back every time.
Also, Wei Shen is THE karaoke champion.
 
This game will always hold a special place in my heart as I got myself a eagle tattoo very similar to the one from Wei Shen.

The game itself has it's flaws but I loved the characters, the story and the melee combat was so satisfying.
