Slender The Arrival Is Out: Great Lighting, Atmosphere

Impressions? Might buy this to stream, only ten dollars and it's the only way I'd be able to get through it anyway. Shame they're still using mannequin slenderman though, he should be much more otherworldly.

Awesome. It's come full circle.

  • Created by SomethingAwful as a parody of those shitty urban legends
  • Gets around as a joke on places like 4chan's /x/ board
  • Tumblr and Reddit get ahold of it
  • Turn it into a serious urban legend
  • Becomes a purchasable product in a "horror" game
  • Now recognized as a shitty, genuine urban legend

It's almost beautiful.

Almost.

Yup... bought the game, but I'm not going to start playing it until there are at least 3 more people in this apartment with me.

God, I hate this slender fad

why? It's fun

Not scary to me at all. Can see how it could be to a large amount of people however .... specially my girlfriend.

Who has to turn off the monitor or get me to play parts of it to progress!

Don't forget the film The Tall Man starring Jessica Biel.

I don't know, these games don't seem to do it for me. I couldn't get into Amnesia either. I really want to like them, but can't get into them. I think the problem is I know that there's no combat. So if I get into a bad situation I know either I'm screwed, or the game is going to take it easy on me and leave me alone.

On the other hand, if I know I can fight back, but have no/limited ammo, or a terrible weapon, that adds more tension. I'm worried about my health and ammo, and the atmospheric tension is layered on top of that.

EDIT: I'm watching Rocochetguro's stream though, and I really like the style and visual effects from insanity.

Are you replaying that part a third time or are you good for this day? Just disconnected accidentally :)

Edit: Sorry for poor writing below, it is quite late and I'm tired. Plus the game added to my stress (the good kind most of the time at least) And thanks for watching, some of the people were watching the entire stream.

Well, finished the game in full so if anyone wants to skip around the archive here it is.

Atmosphere was amazing and the game actually looks decent. Are quite a few problems in that area though. The walls have a lot of the issue where you get a line coming down because they aren't placed properly. I'm not sure what you call it(Texture seams?) but it's there. Plus there are some poor textures in places so hopefully they can update that. The shadow at the beginning of the game needs to be changed as well, it shows the flashlight in your shadow before you even pick it up.

The camera effects are well done but one does have to accept the absurdity that is you running around with a camera in your face while being chased by a horrible otherworldly creature :D

Main issue though is the door opening system is incredibly clunky, it's Penumbra/Amnesia style but it only works half the time. Game is also quite short, ten dollars and I completed it in 2 hours. Don't think it's quite worth 10, 5 would have been perfect but oh well.

Story honestly made very little sense to me but keep in mind I was streaming while running for my life so I won't dig on it too much.

Still, the game very much still feels like a work in progress. Came across a game-breaking bug twice midgame and had to stop the stream to patch. Suppose I can't really recommend it at ten dollars but I did enjoy going through it and the atmosphere really was well done. Slenderman doesn't have the mannequin face anymore which is nice, although I still don't think he is as otherworldly as he should be. He kind of looking like he was stung with a ton of bees now, which is scary in its own way.
with the exception of the last stage

Good to see the environments are at least trying to be relatable, and not ham-fisting every single scary-sounding trope under one roof. (Spooky dilapidated hospital during a stormy night with flickering lights etc)

Slender's gameplay/immersion isn't for me, and we'll be getting influx of terrible YouTube 'scare reaction' commentary on this game - but it's nice to see the Slender thing itself bring something new to survival horror.

Can anybody confirm controller support?

Checked the options and there is no option for it what so ever. Going to the binding settings and pressing controller buttons didn't work either.

What does the difficulty change by the way? Is it big, game altering stuff?

Hm. Thanks. How is it performance wise? Will I be able to play on a Macbook? Graphics looks kinda intense.

Well, it's hard for me to really say given I have a pretty nice PC. GTX670 and i53570K which is probably well beyond what you have in your macbook. I was getting a steady 60 in-game at 1080P while streaming at 720P@30 with everything up so it's certainly not an intensive game. You should be able to run it no matter what with some sacrifices, there are a ton of graphics options.

Edit: http://www.slenderarrival.com/?page=faq Minimum requirements at the bottom of the page, you should have no issues.

I'd love to see it on Steam but I might buy it anyway. Never played the original game but it looked like a few good hours of fun...and terror.

Thanks for the help. Would rather play it on my Steambox, but no controller support means I'm going to play on a Macbook.

They mentioned that they'll be posting the game to Greenlight sometime in the future, so keep an eye on that?

I wasn't that big of a fan of 8-pages, but ended up loving Arrival. It isn't very long (I beat it in an hour and a half), but the late game chapters were terrific. There's five chapters, though really the game's 'chapters' are split up more to have two interactive exploration-based areas, two 'chased' gameplay chapters, and a conclusion that's a bit linear, but well executed.

I don't want to spoil it, but the games third chapter (set in some mines) has to be the scariest and most fun Slender-related thing I have ever played.

I'm new to this game (didn't play the original) but are there no game saves?
Not a big deal if not, I'd just like to be sure.

It's definitely a short game, but I feel like there'll almost certainly be another one which continue to iterate on the core idea. If you beat the last level on hardcore there's certainly a tease that it's not over. I feel like, at the very least, this game serves to silence all the lame ass imitators and take things to another level for Slender Man games. There's certainly a lot of room for improvement. There have been quite a few bugs, the game is short, and most objectives boil down to "Find x number of thing y." But I still feel as if they got a lot more right than they did wrong, especially with a limited team and budget like this. The way I look at it, they made a beautiful, terrifying, well-paced game with several environments and an enjoyable story that you need only engage as much as you wish to. I was hardly expecting a revolution in terms of game structure or mission design. I'll likely dive back in and try to find all of the notes, because I'm really enjoying trying to piece together the story.

Bought this when it was on offer ($5) and played through the beta. Got the full version this week. Pretty great upgrade from the original. Agreed the Slender fad is just like the zombies everywhere and such but this one is pretty much the one that spawned it all in commercial form. So, yes, the graphics surprised me, they are quite nice!

It feels like an "arcade" version of the horror genre in the sense that it has a stage based progression, it's short and highly replayable like most arcade games are (shmups, fighters, puzzlers, etc.)

And, to be honest, I prefer shorter games nowadays...

The scares are there and, like it was mentioned, chapter 3 is definitely creepy as hell. Jumped a couple of times but I also suffered from extremely jerky performance. Not sure if this is caused by the Unity engine or poor programming though.

What kind of performance are you guys getting?

I cant seem to get over 30 FPS. Like its capped at 30 or something maybe.

It's also not using SLI too.

Yeah, on further examination my comment about constant 60 FPS isn't quite true(at least for the second stage). The game certainly isn't capped at 30 but it must not be using all of my computer's power because in the forest it can't stay at a constant 60.

With vsync off I get a pretty constant 47 in the forest. Not sure what is going on there. Other stages run much better, keep in mind I am using SSAA and have everything cranked up.

Just beat this game... a little disappointed, but definitely an improvement on the original. The story is a little disappointing, and the game overall is far too short, not really sure where the series goes from here.

For those that don't know, there is a hidden sixth level you can unlock in the game. It's unlocked in prologue by:

-Ensure your game patch is up to date.
-Running straight for the house
-Grabbing the flashligh
-Turning on the radio
-Exiting the front of the house, walking past the brick wall, turning to the left, and looking at the missing child poster for Charles Matheson Jr., who many believe to be the proxy in level 3.
-If you're doing it right, text will pop up that says "I should keep an eye out."
-Return to the main menu
-Repeat this 2 more times and then start a new game. Things will be... different.

Enjoy. Easily the most frightening part of the game for me. Here's a video of Markiplier finding it for those who don't wish to do it themselves.

Also, the game is now available on GOG, where the kindly user reviewers are relentlessly tearing it a new one seemingly only because it's a Slender game. I'd be willing to bet most of them haven't even played it and they just give it 1 or 2 stars out of spite. I'm not trying to say this game is perfect, because it's not. I'd say it's at about 3.5 to 4 stars for me. There are plenty of things to fault this game for, but to even suggest any sort of lack of effort on the dev's part offends me. Love and passion was clearly put into this game, perhaps to the point that they overlooked the repetitiveness of the actual objectives and gameplay. But just as The Eight Pages served as a solid foundation for this game, this game could easily serve as a further solidification of a base for a third game in the series.

Thanks a million, wouldn't have discovered this otherwise. And yeah, saw some of the gog reviews and a lot of them seem to range from unfair to just hating on the slender relation. Gog needs to make it so that you can only review a game you own. Wonder if being a modern game also has some relation to the slamming? As I said above, certainly not a perfect game, but it doesn't deserve the 2 stars it currently has. At the very least the "no effort" comments are rather insulting.

If I had known gog was getting the game though I would have waited to buy it, oh well.

I don't think I've ever seen a video I've hated more in my entire life. Holy shit is that guy annoying.

Youtube scare commentators or whatever the hell they're called really are the worst. If you think that one is bad by god don't look up pewdiepie. I've never hated a random person so much.

Yeah, it embarrasses me to call myself a horror fan when we have these people representing us on youtube. It astounds me how they get popular enough to self-perpetuate their own bullshit over and over again on youtube and make a decent clip of money off of it. pewdiepie is the worst of them all though - he's come out publicly as being an absolute tool and a dick, and seeing him take a huge hit from his own community after he taunted and started youtube drama with another youtuber (lol these kids) gave me some faith that maybe people are getting tired of this shit. I can only dream of the day when they crawl back under the rocks they came from.

That said, well done on that secret level. I just blew through the steps and it was not what I was expecting in the best of ways.
Some excellent Eternal Darkness-esque 4th wall breaking there! Messing with the software just as much as the in-game world.
I'd say as a whole that felt better than the entirety of the main campaign.

I think the secret level would be an interesting way to go for what would seem to be an inevitable 3rd game. Where the game isn't interacting with the player character, but the player him or herself. Half of the fun of The Slender Man is the tulpa effect that has been attributed to him: the more you know the more real he becomes. The secret level certainly seems to nod towards that. It could easily become cheesy or trying too hard, but at the very least it'd be different. Shatter the 4th wall and really try and fuck with people. For example, in this game if you try to clip through a wall to escape from Slender Man, you get a death screen that says "Not even a bug in this game can save you from me."
