Slot Machine apps for iOS/Android

Also known as: One-Armed Bandits, Pokies, Fruit Machines, etc. =P

So I have loved Casino video games ever since I was little. It all started with Vegas Dreams for the NES. I have never been to a real casino in my life, and it's probably for the better because I'm sure there would be no turning back for me as I am very compulsive. So one day, I was looking for a good deal on one of the slot machine games for the Neo Geo Pocket Color, when I stumbled upon Slotomania. This is a slots game for Facebook. This opened up a whole new world to me. The graphics were so pretty! It had a leveling system! It was "free"!

And that brings us to this topic. Over the last couple of years I have tried out tons of slots games on both Facebook and iOS. There is a LOT of junk but there are also some very nice gems out there. So I thought I would list my favorites that I have stuck with and see if there is anyone else on GAF who also enjoys these. They are definitely not for everybody, but if you are thinking about trying one, I will do my best to tell you the pros and cons of my top picks. I will add to this list over time. Screens are from iOS versions.

+ Beautiful graphics and rich sound effects/music.
+ Smooth frame rate
+ Able to collect free coins from Facebook fan page through your mobile device if game is installed

- Terrible 3 hour bonus. If you run out of coins, you pretty much have to go to Facebook and collect coins from their fanpage. Thankfully, they give out coins frequently. But it is annoying.
- Most slots are highly volatile. Machines "go cold" often but when they hit, they hit pretty good.
- Older devices may experience long reel spins due to bad memory usage of the app. Smooth as butter on iPad.
+ Facebook syncs your progress across multiple devices even if you delete.

Android: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.williamsinteractive.jackpotparty

+ Features real land-based machines from WMS.
+ Some of the best music ever composed for slots
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cZvkm8qkK64
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0pPBssfR-no
+ Emulation of the land-based slots is pretty faithful. Missing a couple animations for Super Big Wins and Mega Big Wins in some games but they are slowly updating them to be more accurate.
+ Good variety of machines with different features such as Money Burst, Spinning Streak, Cascading Reels, etc.
+ Facebook syncs your progress across multiple devices even if you delete.

- Notoriously hard to level up. Machine unlocks are spaced 5 levels apart as well, making it worse.
- Four hour bonus could be better, you need to collect it about 5 times before it becomes a Mega Bonus. Lots of downtime if you are broke.
- Very slow at adding games to app. They are way behind on the mobile apps compared to the Facebook version but they recently added two games in one week, so hopefully they are speeding it up.
- Very high volatility. Especially the Money Burst machines. You have many dead spins, do not bet too high, raise your stake gradually as your purse grows or you will be waiting for bonuses.
- They never post free coins on their Facebook fan page. Never.

Slots Showdown
Platforms:
iOS: https://itunes.apple.com/us/app/slots-showdown/id597960082?mt=8

+ Features authentic video slots from Nyx Software.
+ Slots are medium to low volatility. Payback percentage is pretty fair for the most part. I'm hardly ever in the red unless I act crazy and max bet, which I would advise against. =P
+ Beautiful graphics and silky smooth frame rate.
+ Relaxing BGM and sound effects.
+ Features live tournaments where you are given a set amount of time to win the most coins.
+ Facebook syncs your progress across multiple devices even if you delete.

- Bonus is available every hour but it is hilariously small.

Golden Slots
Platforms:
iOS: https://itunes.apple.com/us/app/golden-slots-casino/id610851675?mt=8
Android: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.mirmay.cslotg

+ Silky smooth frame rate with colorful and vibrant graphics.
+ Varied and pleasant sound design
+ Low volatility slots. Hit often, but rarely hit really big. You can play for a while, great for beginners.
+ Can play offline.

- Hard to hit the bonus games on this one. They need to be on an active payline and left-aligned I believe. This is the worst way to set up bonus symbols.

Doubledown Casino
Platforms:
iOS: https://itunes.apple.com/us/app/doubledown-casino-free-slots/id485126024?mt=8
Android: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.ddi&hl=en

+ LOTS of different slots to choose from including land-based slots from IGT.
+ Free coins are posted occasionally on FB page.
+ Can also play Video Poker, Blackjack, and Slots Tournaments on mobile app.
+ All slots are unlocked from the start. There is a leveling system, but it is just cosmetic.

- The emulation they use on mobile for these slots is really janky. Sound cues are missing, music is added that wasn't there before and it overlaps the original sounds, reel spin animation feels off and lags, etc.
- Constant connection issues and bad support for older devices. An iPad or tablet is recommended.
- Bonus only occurs once a day and if you are flat broke, it will barely cover one pull on the higher end machines.
- No IGT Wheel of Fortune. =(

Jackpot Joy Slots
Platforms:
iOS: https://itunes.apple.com/us/app/slots-by-jackpotjoy/id544237538?mt=8
Facebook: https://apps.facebook.com/jackpotjoyslots/?fb_source=fbpage_button

+ Awesome art and sound design.
+ Imaginative bonus games, including an auto-playing "platformer" for their cascading reels slot Jungle Jump.
+ Generous 4 hour bonus including a daily spin for even more free coins. They also give away coins on their FB page.
+ They have a set 2 week schedule for adding new games.

- A majority of the games highly volatile. Lots of dead spins. Wager carefully.
- Way behind on games compared to FB version. They would have to add 2 or 3 every two weeks to catch up at the rate they are going.

Honorable mention goes out to Aristocrat's slots apps. They are $1.99-$2.99 each and don't have any IAP. They have leaderboards and tournaments. Also Bally's apps are or of similar quality and polish. Maybe I will add them to the op later if anyone cares. ;)

Also, feel free to share your favorites if you play slots!

lost $300 at vegas last time.

i try to stay away from all sorts of slot machines if i can :X

even though, pretty much all f2p games on the store have some sort of gambling aspect these days too :(

My wife would probably love something like this for her phone. Are they playable on a smaller screen? Are there any good ones that can be played offline, i.e. I don't want anything that has the potential for micro-transactions, would rather just pay upfront for the game.

I hated the slot game I played on Android a while back. It felt like it wanted you to put money into it via IAP, but obviously without the benefit of maybe winning some actual money.

They are perfectly playable on a smaller screen. I play most of these on my iPhone. If you want to avoid micro-transactions, I would definitely check out the Bally and Aristocrat apps. Absolutely no IAP and if you run out of coins you can reset your virtual bankroll to a set amount infinitely. You can also play offline, no Internet needed unless you want to upload your score. Search for "Aristocrat slots" or "Bally slots" in your App Store. They are available on both iPhone and Android.

Yeah, some of them are really bad and have really unfair payback percentages to try to force you into topping up. =/
The only times I have ever paid for IAP was to unlock a premium slot that you couldn't unlock any other way. That feels like a better use of my money instead of buying fake money with real money. Like you said, it's not like you can cash out.
