Small animations in games that please you

A bit of both actually. They used models but drew over them.

The art is rendered in the game as 2D vector graphics. It's uncommon for that style to be used in games. Most games use either raster sprites or 3D polygons as their primitives. Probably the most notable other example is Another World.

I don't think they used 3D models extensively to get the animation data. It's almost all hand animated from what I've read.

There is another taunt she does where she looks like she is gathering strength or something, i would always do it right after her abare tosanami just because it looked so cool to me..

Well that one is kinda a lengthy. But you know it increases the damage of your next hit right?

The peeps that designed this game's style and art are on my "I wish I could ask them how they do magic" list.
Seriously. This is some AMAZING stuff to see in motion. So good.

Always wondered how he was a fighting Pokemon with those stubby little arms. Turns out he throws his arms out like little Luffy punches. Wish I could find a gif of that.

I want to see how small this thread can go.

In Batman: Arkham City while playing as Catwoman, when going into a run in a different direction from where she's facing, there's a distinct transitional animation.

I couldn't find a decent gif of it, but some of the Warthog animations in Halo Wars were soooooo good. Like, they'd fishtail a little going around a hard corner, stuff like that.

I'm playing Mega Man Extreme (GBC) right now. The short stage intro animation where Mega Man teleports in makes me happy every time. Great animation and spritework in general.

I also adore the little animations that play in Risk of Rain (PC) for each playable character when you select them. Gives each one such personality.

I have no access to any GIFs at the moment, but Breath of Fire 4 has some absolutely wonderful stuff. Great sense of motion and timing, the stretching and squashing is expertly done, had a lot of hand-sprited frames, and they just feel so full of life. My favourites are the mimic chests.

Ghost Trick was another one I enjoyed a lot, for how silly it is. The animation contributes just as much to the characters as the dialogue. That's quite the compliment, since I really enjoyed the writing of that game.

Fire Emblem GBA, the thread.

All of them.

You're a good person.

the amount of Alice in Wonderland DS in this thread (i.e. any) makes me happy.

I always thought it was just a tie-in game for the movie as it came out at roughly the same time. I might have to grab a copy and check it out.

Oh man well done animations are like my favorite thing in video game graphics. The Resident Evil 4 reloading and GBA Fire Emblem animations are so gooood!

The way Alucard sort of settles if you let him stand idle for a while. The way he crosses his legs when he sits. SotN has lots of great little animations.

When drake was shot at while hanging on and taking cover on the sides of boats (or anything found in the water) in Uncharted 3 he would continuously peek and move his head to avoid getting shot. One of my favorite details in the series.

Always been partial to the various idle animations in Metroid Prime and Halo CE. Especially in Prime when Samus lifts her hand to her visor to look at it. Always looked really neat in the X-Ray visor and Thermal visor.

One of my favorite gaming mechanics is parrying with Castlevania Lords of Shadow as a favorite. On the parry, time slows down for an instant and zooms in on you for your counterattack which is epic. Figuring out how to parry to Cornell's second form was awesome as I was having major difficulties which were remedied once I started to parry successfully. Its also great since you can have special counters if your blue or red magic is activated.

God of War 3 is also great and a little easier to execute since baddie attack movement speed is a bit slower than Lords of Shadow. Honorable mention to Dark Souls as well.
