Small things that bug you in good games.

Quick Time Events in the God of War series.

This. I enjoyed the game until I had to fight 40000 of anything in a row that required a quicktime to avoid a longtime killing it.

Mega Man Zero Collection, all games.

The Cyber Elf system is there as this way to earn the best upgrades for Zero, like health expansions, etc. But why does the game PUNISH you for doing something that you earned?! If it takes 2000 crystals to mature a Cyber Elf that extends your health, shouldn't that be your unpunished reward for taking all that time to find those 2000 crystals?! Why even fucking put the system in the game if they're just going to call you a bitch (by your rank) for using it?

The blue shell in Mario Kart Wii. That game is honestly my favorite mario kart ever and yes I played all of them around the same time they came out but the blue shell remains to be one of the most questionable design choices I've ever seen. Like i can maybe understand if it only occurred when 1st place has a huge lead, hell i think that might even be a good idea but as it is now it can ruin otherwise great races.

Its weird in that the person that gets it being in last place really hates getting the blue shell, because the lightning bolt or bullet bill is way more useful to him. Its not very likely for the last place to move up to first and i think bullet bill or lightning might even make him catch up faster then the blue shell. So the only person that really cares is the 2nd or 3rd place players, and they already have plenty of options to catch up since they can attack with red and green shells while the first place person can barely do anything to retaliate.

It still has the best tracks, controls, and items and i love it for that, but WTF. This is all made worse when you realize the blue shell is probably here to stay.

Also the collectathon quest they tacked on at the end of Metroid Prime 1 and 2. I know they want to give you a chance to fully explore the world after you get all your powers but i felt I did just enough backtracking already by the time those quests come up and just want to finish the game.

Also snipers in pretty much any online shooter. I know they are probably balanced or underpowered most of the time, and people have every right to play the game they want to play, but they are still annoying to fight against as can possibly be. I say snipers generally should only use automatic sniper rifles so they aren't one hit kills but still have the advantage long range. It would require some testing and balancing but i think it could work.

Ummm....lower the volume of the other sounds? Sheesh.

- game has volume sliders for music, voices, effects etc.

- FUUUUUUUUUUUUUU-

I hate it when the Background Music is by default just louder than the SFX and the voices. Some games, I dont know if they did it on purpose or not, has the voices sounding much quieter than the background music. I think even one game the background music was just way louder than they were, lol, I had to move the slider down to below halfway for background music just to even hear the characters say anything in battle and such.

Halo and Halo 2. Not being able to turn up the voices and turn down the music and sound effects. For a game that has so much spoken dialogue during gameplay I'd like to be able to hear what they're telling me without it getting completely drowned out by explosions, shots, or dramatic music.

Uncharted - trying to pick up ammo but instead picking up a weapon you didn't want. Then you have the wrong item shuffle where you keep trying to pick up one item but keep grabbing the wrong one. Seperate buttons next time, ND.

I'm playing through Bioshock for the first time and my god, I am SO sick of the hacking!
The hacking should have been varied with many different mini-games. The pipe-dream sort of game was good, but it was the only goddam one :P

Then you can simply turn all of them down midway, then turn up the effect you want and then turn up all of the sound on your tv or soundsystem.

Lack of colorblind support. Don't make me distinguish between blue and purple to save my life. Don't ask me to truly recognize a color like Cyan or Burnt Sienna. Keep it simple.

We're out there, and we are legion. And we would play your colorblind bigoted games if we could.

This annoys me in all games, but especially RPGs:

- die
- death animation
- load
- game over screen
- load
- publisher screen
- developer screen
- engines/tools screen
- load
- opening animation/attract
- title screen
- choose saved game screen
- load
- there now you can try again!

Fuck, is it too much to just give me the option at the game over screen to load my saved game? Can we assume I might want to try again? Persona 3, you are chief motherfucker on this!

Games treating you like you are a dumbass. Like others have posted, constant reminders.

Would you like to ______? Followed by are you sure?
That damn owl in Legend of Zelda Ocarina of Time.
Yes I know how to move, aim, shoot, punch, whatever stop reminding me.

Halo: ODST
I was just finishing it on Legendary whilst listen to podcasts, but the subtitles in that game are terrible. They kept turning off every time I came back to the game, and there didn't seem to be any in-game subtitles for your teammates.

Mass Effect 2
Just about all of the character dialog in combat. There just seems to be so little that it gets annoying very fast. It becomes unbelievable after multiple playthroughs.
Jacob: "Gravity's one mean mother, huh?" <-- (this line is why I never use Jacob)
Miranda/various: "One less/left!"

On top of it being repetitive, it's also the way everyone delivers the lines. They just belt it out as loudly as possible. It just seems out of character for some of them to be shouting these stupid one-liners in the middle of combat.

When your playing a game and you die repetitively and it ask you, "Do you want to try this on a easier difficulty."

Hell naw. You think I'm going to jeopardize my Platinum Trophy or this 1000 achievement points just to do this on easy mode.

Having to tap the A button (360) ten times to open a vent in Arkham Asylum. What's even worse? After you push the A button ten times you have to watch the five second animation for the thousand time before you can actually enter the damn vent.

And when the fuck did Batman become such a vent dweller?

Not being able to turn down the FX volume in games. I've only really encountered this in MGS4 which makes the
Metal Gear REX
scene sound horrible on my tv. I guess it's my fault for having a sdtv.

Sound FX is one thing, but when a decent/good game have frame rates drops or the famous... "We do not believe in Subtitles." options in a game, I get angry. Seriously, how can you hear what to do next when you hear nothing but bullets, screaming or an announcement of a UAV is online. I want subtitles. Also, it will help out some of my friends that are deaf.

I hate when the cursor is set to "New Game" instead of "Continue" by default. More often than not a player will be continuing his/her game instead of starting a new one.

Visible enemies in DQ9.

This. Also I hate when enemies gang up on you while you're using the menu and healing your party members.

turnbuckle said:
Other minor nuissances: Lack of option to turn off or reduce battle animations.

And this. It seems totally random how they're running around and takes so damn long.

Also from DQIX: Everytime there's just one enemy left you don't have to confirm what enemy you're attacking. Sounds sensible, but that also means if you're not paying enough attention you immediately confirm the action for another character.

Item management in Dead Rising. The fact that food, books and weapons are all stored in one bar makes for some annoying mishaps in the heat of battle. Say a melee weapon breaks, then the system automatically selects the next item on the list, so drinking a carton of milk when you're swarmed with zombies isn't out of the question. That is the one thing in that game that annoyed me to no end. They just needed to separate weapons from the rest.

In Halo 3, it brings up a message right in the middle of the screen if you are standing over a weapon for a few seconds "Hold [button] to pick up weapon."

Thank you game. I've played half a million matches and I don't know how to pick up weapons. Almost suprising that it doesn't pop up "Press RT to shoot" when not shooting.

When playing GTA4 and your on the phone to somebody, then some douche walks past, bumps into you and then you miss the rest of the phone conversation. Also happens when getting in and out of cars. so fucking annoying.

Rockstar programming for gamers with two thumbs on their right hands. I adore RDR, but making A the 'make horse go' button and forcing you to tap it or hold it down at all times does not jibe with needing to manipulate the camera constantly. I find myself just cruising around, moving the camera a little and then tapping A and then moving the camera some more and tapping A again. And having to fight from horseback is ridiculous because you can't aim and spur your horse at once.

What's worse is that sometimes you can. Sometimes you can get the camera into a position where the game seems to realise you can't be holding A and the horse will auto-run. When you're driving a wagon the horses will auto-navigate while you aim, but not if you're just riding a horse. Sometimes Marston will auto-run during combat, sometimes he won't. It's much better than GTA IV was but it's still so frustrating. Let me run with a shoulder button, or give me analogue control like every single other modern game, for the love of God.

THIS! Lol I was great in puzzle fighter home version since I could change the colours of the gems on my TV, but I just guessed in the arcade version/HD Remix versions.

I also hate colour based puzzles in games, a lot of times they get so needlessly frustrating especially since I don't want to mess with the colour settings of my LCD TV all the time. Whenever I run into them I just go on gamefaqs which can unintentionally spoil the game for me.

SEAMS.

Seamwalking in Ocarina of Time was amazing. It allowed you to climb up to some unreachable places, like the real top of Death Mountain (well,at least almost).:D

Things that bug me are the controls in MGS3 when you are crouching - it often caused Snake to squat and getting discovered by the guards.

Also,it bugs me that you have to go the item menu and switch items around several times in Links Awakening to advance through the overworld. The overworld itself is nice, but switching items everytime when I want to explore it?Nope. And I know that there are teleporters, but simply not enough.

Non-modifiable HUD elements in open world games. Just Cause 2 and the Assassins Creed series handle this issue correctly by providing an opacity setting in the first case and toggleable elements in the second.

Tripping in Super Smash Bros. Brawl. Sweet holy fuck, what a terrible design choice.

That nonsense in the Halo 3 campaign where the camera focus would change and you'd walk... really... slowly... while Gravemind or Cortana spoke to you. So goddamn irritating.

It's not really a small thing, but I really dislike poor voice acting in otherwise good games. For instance, whatever faults Red Dead Redemption might have, the voice acting is fantastic. It's more than liking a particular actor's voice, the pacing is very good like..I dunno...an actual voice actor did it.

So, my next game is Far Cry 2 which is great so far, but the voice acting is paced dreadfully. It's especially annoying because they have several distinct voices and took the time to get different accents and genders. But the pacing is horrible, people spitting out their lines in monotone as fast as possible. Bummer since it opens with a great spoken performance (the driver in the cab).

Japanese games that have been translated are often horrid, but there's not near enough time taken in general.
