Smash 4 Was Possibly Going to Get a Rhythm Heaven Character at One Point

Unfortunately, I get the impression that the Chorus Kids were cut for the same reason as the Ice Climbers: 3DS parity. Here's an excerpt from a recent interview with Sakurai:

Interviewer: I was surprised by how much content the 3DS version has.

Sakurai: Truthfully, I thought about having less characters in the 3DS version. But, I didn’t want there to be a superior version. On top of making each version satisfactory, we developed each version to have the same number of characters and play the same way. It was important to not have an inferior version.

Less characters, plural. Thanks, 3DS version.

You do realize that's a translation of a Japanese interview? Analyzing whether or not he used plurals is useless because it's not a direct quote.

Can you link me to recent interview please? I think I haven't read that interview yet.

There was no way the 3DS and Wii U games were ever going to comparable. They should have just went all out on the Wii U with technical characters and left the 3DS version to be a light, on the go, Smash.

Since Smash Wii U came out, I've turned the 3DS version on exactly once. And it was to check a trophy description.

which interview is this? if it's a translation of japanese interview that quote may not necessarily correct

There's no plural in the Japanese language.

However I agree, probably cut due to 3DS not being able to handle them, just like IC.

PLEASE BE DLC, PLEASE BE DLC!!

There is that new Rhythm Heaven game for 3DS that's supposed to be releasing this year... Smash Bros. DLC would be a good way to promote the new game...

I just want Bayonetta in Smash. Is that asking for way too much? I think she'd be great. :(

As far as the OP, that virus thing sounds awesome and I wish it was in. Dr. Mario so good. :D

The absence of Rhythm Heaven music (on top of Sneaky Spirit in Smash Run and Gematsu) already soft-confirmed the planning and removal of a Rhythm Heaven character in my mind, but this is certainly interesting to see.

Honestly, I think this ship has already sailed. Either due to their cut being for technical reasons or Sakurai being Sakurai, I don't see Chorus Kids being added as DLC. Still, if the series survives the next 4 or 5 years (it's in good shape with a new game just announced), a Rhythm Heaven character seems like a shoo-in for the next game. And then, I will get my Rhythm Heaven music arrangements and Ko Takeuchi promotional art.

And people will still deny Gematsu ever had any truth to it.

It's awesome to get some confirmation that this was a thing, especially seeing how Rhythm Heaven only got representation through trophies, not even any music! I really hope they add the Chorus Kids as DLC. Though now that I've actually played through Rhythm Heaven I feel like Karate Joe would be the better RH rep.

I was actually surprised that something Rhythm Heaven didn't happen given how oddly Sakurai a choice they seemed even from the oft debated Gematsu days. Hopefully DLC does them some justice along with Mewtwo.

When's playable Takamaru though?

I honestly couldn't understand how anyone didn't think Gematsu was at least somewhat correct, but now that there's even more proof, good.

If Mewtwo is the only DLC, then it is time for Sakurai to retire.

Eh. I want DLC badly, but I also want Sakurai making the best games he can make. If he wouldn't be giving DLC his all, I'd rather not get it. Plus, I think the prospects of Chorus Kids DLC are fairly slim. Sure, they might be closer to being finished, and thus would be cheaper to make, and then might be likely. But if they're not? I don't think they'd do it. When they release a full game, they can include weirder characters like Wii Fit Trainer and ROB, and people will buy it anyways because of the more popular included characters. But when you just sell those weirder characters on their own? They're not gonna sell as well, and it may not be seen as worth it.

What a shame. Hopefully they'll return to the Rhythm Heaven character concept next time.

You can't be serious.
100%. A complete lack of interesting new features, missing several highly requested characters, and minimal post-release support? The man may just need to move on. He is a fantastic game designer, but he isn't reading the fan base well, and that is what matters.

I reorganized it into a list.

Take a look at bold and underlined words, we haven't seen those emblem yet.

Miiverse stage is coming as DLC stage but I don't think Mii Plaza stage would be same stage as Miiverse stage. I could be wrong tho.

I found it interesting that Dairy were planned to be in the game.
Maybe I'm missing something, but "rhythm" is between Plankton, Touch, Nintendogs... what makes you 100% sure it's a character emblem rather than a stage?

It's between Duck Hunt and Mega Man for the newcomers. The stage series are all after the playable series. (In Touch and Plankton's case, they're after the Brawl characters)

Uhhh... like who? I'm having a hard time thinking of characters with an actual chance to get in that aren't in. Basically, Blaziken, Wolf, Impa and Dark Samus are the only ones I can think of, and they're such minor additions. Folks like K Rool and Ridley are never getting in, no matter who the developer is, so it's not even worth mentioning them.

It's not like he cut Dedede to add in some clones or cut 3 vets and 4 new comers for Sonic at the final hour of the game, that would be ridiculous and worth complaining about.

Both of those happened

There are multiple bits here. First, in the playable character folder, theres a fighter folder listed as "Rhythm." This situation is identical to the forbidden 7 in Brawl's Data, who were all planned but cut characters for that game, including Mewtwo, Roy and Dr Mario.

The next bit comes in the Stages Folder, were yet again Rhythm has a stage that was apparently cut.

The third comes from the Emblem data, which implies they also had an emblem (Which they were guaranteed to have if they made it in)...so this one is not a surprise.

He didn't cut Dedede to add in clones, he cut Dedede to add in Marth. Then added clones. Then realized after the fact he probably could've added Dedede instead of the clones.
He also didn't cut 4 newcomers for Sonic. He possibly cut 4 clones, 2 clone vets, and Mewtwo for Sonic. No one knows if they were going to get in if Sonic didn't or not.

Sakurai has already stated that there will be no further DLC after Mewtwo.

Did he actually said that? Last time I heard that he have no plan for further DLC AT THE MOMENT.

He haven't dismiss it completely yet, but I'm not going to set my hope high for DLC tho.

Sakurai has already stated that there will be no further DLC after Mewtwo.

Sakurai also stated that he didn't want to do another Smash Bros game after Melee, yet here we are.

Plus, in this case, the quote is:
However, what I can say now about paid DLC is that we aren't working on anything at the moment.
Combine that with this quote:
As for why Mewtwo isn’t paid content from the start, releasing that character is an experiment meant to act as a foothold in content distribution; thus it’s simply meant as part of the service we’re providing to gamers.
And it seems highly possible that they're using Mewtwo to judge rather or not they'll do DLC and how they'll do it.

Yeah Nintendo has done/currently does a lot of dumb shit but I'm struggling to think of anything that could be dumber than sitting on the biggest goldmine in DLC ever.

Mewtwo is one thing but seriously, why stop there. As crammed as the game is, I truly feel like there could be more with little effort.

Give us Lucas and Wolf, there's no reason not to just throw them in by keeping them as they were in Brawl. (Just a texture update and balancing tweaks, right?)

And what about past stages as well? Rainbow Ride, Corneria, Pirate Ship and a third Pokemon Stage were all severely lacking. Not to mention all Mother 3 references being nuked and F-Zero getting the complete shaft. At the very least just up-port Magicant and Mute City from the 3DS version.

As for new characters and stages, well that's a little hairier as it would require a lot more work but I think I speak for a lot of people here when I say Nintendo has me by the balls and could charge an unjustified amount and I'd still pay it. And do you know what? I'd thank them for it. If there's one game where there can never be to much DLC, it's Smash.

That's the polite way of saying no.

Except no.

Exactly why I'm sure Nintendo is gonna do it. They're not stupid. They know that DLC for Smash is a no brainier.

Sakurai has said they will include characters based on franchises they're planning to return to, and they've announced a new Rhythm Heaven game. Advance Wars is cool and it would be good for them to return to it, but they're ABSOLUTELY returning to Rhythm Heaven. It would have been a great addition.

And yeah, I love that DHD was included.

It should be wrestling man+announcer.

You could feel what that wrestler wanted in that particular mini game

Sakurai's been blunt as hell about things before, such as Ridley not being playable. I think he'd flat out say no.

It'd be smart to do DLC, but if Sakurai for whatever reason doesn't want to work on it and doesn't want it to be done without him, it might be smarter not to. Smash prints money and Sakurai is a key part of making the series. It might be smarter to stay on good terms with one of their most talented game designers.

I sure hope so. The problem is that it's just Sakurai has the tendency to be a real stick in the mud. Worth noting, did anyone see what he said in an interview about bringing Mewtwo back?

Q: Do you think you'll be able to spend your next birthday (August 3rd) in peace?

Sakurai: I wonder (laughs). I don't know, but I think so. For some reason I promised to make Mewtwo, and we might have things like patches on the way. We're working hard on it now, which means everything we make is something we didn't start on until now.

Like, Jesus, I have the utmost respect for him working his blood, sweat and tears into these games but if it really is taking his toll on him then maybe leave? I'm sure there'd be more than a few volunteers to take his place, and his enthusiasm isn't exactly inspiring. (Which tbf is somewhat understandable at this point)

Datamining the 3DS version has already given us plenty of proof that they were thinking about DLC already. The Gematsu leaker said they were thinking about DLC even prior to that.

I think that Sakurai is just torn about the idea of revealing it too early, because he thinks there would be a backlash, with people thinking he removed content from the game to serve it later on; here's an actual quote: "However, I think there might be criticism that we are cutting up content to sell characters one by one, or that we are adding things later that should have been there from the start". Fact is: this time nobody cares, the fans know he didn't purposedly remove anything, if not for time and technological costraints, just announce the DLC already.

That's a good point, though wasn't Ridley more implied at first in the Direct I think? People didn't want to believe he was just a boss at the time.

But I don't know, it's just suspicious that Mewtwo is taking so long despite having a pre-existing framework from Melee to reference. Sakurai stated a few times that characters take a long time to develop, so it seems like a real uphill battle to release more DLC fighters.

Then again the next MK8 update is in May.
