God yes, I have been championing the need for lesser known Nintendo characters, particularly Hector and other FE characters in order to bring more diversity to the SSB roster. The game, in my mind, sorely lacks female characters and as a whole weapons diversity.

To me the SSB franchise has gone beyond the realm of just Nintendo super stars, it doesnt need to, nor should it hide behind big name characters, its a legitimate figther and as such should be free to take from the massive pool of characters in order to provide a diverse and balanced roster. I mean especially now that they are bringing in 3rd party characters, however limited that might be.

NO... Definately not.. SSBs prime charm is its characters.. Its not like the game is bad or anything.. its just that the character roaster it provides is so incredible that it overshadows any other good thing about this series..

Imagine SSBM without all this fanservice.. it would be a legitimate powerstone, VF, Tekken competitor.. But definately not the multimillion selling juggernaut it has become

Tonight, we're gonna get Ness' comeback, with an entirely new moveset, completely different from Lucas'. That and a new tune from Mother 2 redone by Yasunori Mitsuda. And then Sakurai's gonna reveal downloadable updates and give us all candy.

probably becuase they are attracting people who don't use the internet and thus haven't seen the Dojo. I don't expect Sakurai to let an American magazine leak the full roster before the game is released in Japan. "everything (seriously) you ever need to know" is simply marketing

Nintendo DS: Something that nobody will see coming. Nobody. Not one person. It's not a playable DS, it's not the Ouendan team, it's not Kawashima. (And it's definitely not a "draw your own" character, because I think we all know what would happen.) It might even be something entirely original, created just for Smash Bros.
Pokemon: Jigglypuff, Lucario
Star Fox: Falco
Wario: Mona
Yoshi
Others: Lip, [wild card slot #1], [wild card slot #2]
Third-party: Bomberman, DQIX Hero

42-character roster with the 23 already-confirmed characters added in. I'm putting stock in the guy who knew about Dragoon being right that Lucario ousted Mewtwo, but also assuming that "Wolf is in" meant he was somewhere in the game as a non-playable character.

The wild card slots are for someone I'm not sure of. Daisy, Micaiah, Ashley, Bowser Jr., Black Shadow, and a fifth third-party character are the characters I think of as slightly likely but none of them probable, so I'll just conservatively say that two of them make it in and the others don't. They all have at least one thing going for them--Daisy and Bowser Jr. just to say they expanded the Mario roster, Micaiah has her ties to Ike, Ashley has her song and would make for a really fun moveset both for the developers to create and for gamers to play, Black Shadow could inherit Melee Ganondorf's moveset, and a third-party character helps Nintendo's relations there--but ultimately they're kind of minor in the scheme of things.

True true, all the more reason for his and other FE GBA lords to be options. But I think its the very fact that they were on a handheld and not a console that keeps them back.

Ohh no, dont get me wrong I know thats vital for the series, it wouldnt have succeeded without it, but now I dont think it hinges upon that. I would never want them to remove characters, fanservice or just make up character, but I dont think they should completely limit themselves to just the star Nintendo characters and games for their roster.

He's an assist trophy, and even if he wasn't, Sakurai didn't want to use daggers because apparently they carry some stigma in some places. (Assist trophy Sothe just does a somersault kick.)

Yeah, they didn't use the SSBB art for Bowser, DK, Yoshi, Sonic, and maybe Kirby, but Kirby has looked the same for the past 5 years or so.

The Donkey Kong artwork is from Jungle Beat. Bowser's from Galaxy. I haven't seen that Yoshi or Sonic artwork before, so they might be from something else.

You're going to be forced to play with a bunch of characters that you don't know, or maybe don't like. A lot of people are going to find characters they love that they otherwise wouldn't have touched. So you're too big a man to like Pokemon, but you're going to have to go through this section with Pikachu. And you may find out that he's a killing machine."

"You can trace it all back to Sakurai-san, this sort of energizer bunny over there [in Japan]. The amount of content he's crammed into this thing is unbelievable."

Kohler gets quoted in the article.

The article as a whole is more or less just rubbing one out for Nintendo and ignoring the game itself except for the photos and captions of things we already know

The article goes out of its way to raise the flag for fanservice and ignore the actual game on the cover.

There's a picture collage with a bunch of different mario games and an overly campy caption at the bottom reading "That loving feeling: No matter the genre--from fighting to racing to gravity-defying action--Nintendo games just have that certain something."

Its dripping with PR, and devoid of discussing actual content in the game.

The fanservice is like the icing on a triple fudge chocolate ice cream cake. It's nice, but it's not what the game is about. Well, I didn't expect much different in a preview.

I am so tempted to collect every cover :( Hope the one I get is Sonic, Samus, or Link. No Meta Knight or Ice Climbers cover and I dislike the Kirby model they used.
 
I'm expecting a 35 character roster, myself. Anything more than that would be fantastic, and anything less... well, the Ice Climbers have already been revealed, so I guess as long as they fit Olimar in I'll be pretty happy regardless. Other noteworthy additions that I'd be pleased to see include Ridley, anyone from Animal Crossing, and returning favourites Ness, Captain Falcon, Luigi, Jigglypuff, and Mr. Game and Watch. I'd also like to see Pyoro (the little bird from WarioWare!) make it in as an AT, although a trophy would be fine I guess. I love those games. :p

And while I don't really trust that french site that posted the complete Brawl roster, I will point out that just because some characters or other things seem totally ridiculous, that's exactly how a lot of people (myself included) felt initially about the leaked Melee roster before it was found to be legit. I mean: Ice Climbers? Mr. Game and Watch? I will be disappointed if there aren't a few wildcards in Brawl's roster as well, though with all the speculation and roster theories out there it may be difficult for a character to be completely unexpected.

I'm pretty much certain there are no newcomers to be announced. Maybe I'm being a little pessimistic, but seriously, I don't understand why everyone (specially at smashboards) think there's no way the roster will consist of less than 40 characters.

Other than the ones that have been announced I'd say that those who have chances are maybe the original secret 4 characters, and I don't really see Ness having much of a chance. As awesome as it would be to get Geno, Tails, Ridley or [insert heavily debated character here]*, I'm pretty sure they're not getting in.

If Olimar is not playable, or at LEAST an AT, I will be extremely surprised. Pikmin seems like Nintendo's latest and greatest franchise, and it would frankly shock me if they did nothing with it

Yup, I agree. I hope I'm proven wrong, but I really think we've got the final roster.

Gotta agree with Alberto here. After all the polls, Sakurai dropping hints and such, I won't be surprised if this game basically taps out around 50 chars.

After all, this game's primary focus is not to be a tourney-fighter, so I doubt that Sakurai and crew are THAT concerned about making this game balanced for competitive play (or at least, not in the traditional aspect of making it balanced, so much that he's more interested in making EVERY character awesome to some degree).

You are being really pessimistic. :P Here are the things that would have to be true for your argument to hold up:


-No characters out of Ganondorf, Falco, Sheik, Young Link, Mewtwo, Mr. Game & Watch, and Marth are returning.
-There's no Animal Crossing character.
-Symbol #19 and the DS symbol are just there for decoration.
-There are only two third-party characters after all.
-Every third-party character in Brawl has more appeal in the West than in Japan.
-The Melee site isn't a precedent--in other words, even though 9 out of Melee's 14 newcomers weren't revealed until after Melee was released, the Dojo has given out all of Brawl's newcomers already.
-Brawl will only have 26 characters (the 23 confirmed ones plus three of the original four unlockables, since you said you don't think Ness is back). Since Melee had 26, this also means that Sakurai and company would be happy with no roster increase over the previous game even though they more than doubled the roster size last time around.


Seems pretty bold to me.

If all the characters have been revealed except for three of the original four unlockables, then, not counting Sheik, ZSS, or the Pokemon Trainer's Pokemon as separate characters, that leaves us with 26 characters. Following the same rules, we had 25 characters in Melee.

This would also mean that there are only three secret characters, which is very disproportionate to the number of secret characters in Melee and SSB64. It would also mean that #13 and #19 are left unrepresented

I don't know who else is gonna make it into the game. Could be Krystal or Ridley or Olimar or someone I haven't even thought of. But I know for certain that we haven't seen all the newcomers.


EDIT: Well dammit, Jiggy beat me. He probably has all of these numbers and shit on a bunch of Excel spreadsheets that never close, whereas I actually had to go check my facts on the Dojo.

Well, for starters, someone could tell us if there's any sort of precedence supporting your opinion. Have past Smash games featured unannounced characters? If so, I don't see why there's reason to doubt this one will be different.

Edit: It seems this thread moves too quickly for me. I'm glad to be able read Jiggy37's answers to my question before I finish typing it!

They don't want to spoil it? In that case i'm thinking this whole Dojo thing was a trap. I didn't want to be spoiled as well :(
