Smash Bros Brawl Dojo Official Update Thread: Goodbye, Cherry-don

I wonder if Sakurai has one HUGE megaton that he wants to reveal at last minute. I mean, even if the game was still coming out in November in Japan, there is still quite a gap between now and then. Or maybe that was Sonic.

So tired, can't type properly.

Fans: Die, monster! Your items don't belong in this tourney!

Sakurai: It was not by my hands that Smash Bros. is once again given flesh. It was called here by... Nintendo, who wish to pay me tribute.

Fans: Tribute!? You steal mens' sleep, and make them your slaves!

Sakurai: Perhaps the same could be said of all video games.

Fans: Your words are as empty as your target level variety. Megatons ill need a director such as YOU.

Sakurai: What is a megaton!? A miserable little pile of updates! But enough talk, let's join the Brawl!

:lol

I am however complaining about Target mode being gimped. Each level in the past games was tailored specifically to each character, taking into consideration the way they jump, their different moves (Ness' PK Thunder anyone? Kirby's Brick?). It just seems like such a... silly decision. I'm not even asking for five levels per character. Just one per would be fine with me.

You do realize that they'd potentially need to create 30+ stages, right? If this game still has clones, you would probably be looking at a 40+ line up... each one needing their own target stages. That would be too much, I think.

Expanding the line-up makes specific stages for each character rather unlikely.

The average amount of time for most fighting game matches is 2:30-3:00 minutes anyway.

It'd get rather dull watching the same match for like 10 minutes or so.

It would be so cool if Sakurai reveals something huge during the final week of updates! :D

Hey guys...where are you getting the 3-min cap from?

In the English versions it says: "About 3 minutes..."

In the Italian versions it says: "...circa tre minuti."

In the French version it says: "Jusqu’à trois minutes..."

In the Spanish version it says: "...un máximo de tres minutos."

In the Japanese version it says: "記録時間は約3分。"

So is it "AROUND 3 MINUTES" or "3 MINUTES TOP"???

What is the correct translation of the Japanese...

The update doesn't tell us if uniquely tailored Target levels are in or out. How can you complain about something that we don't know about yet? :lol

The only thing Sakurai tells us is that there are 5 Target stages that get more difficult. For all we know it could be 5 unique stages for everyone. Or maybe the first 4 stages are the same and the final hardest stage is a uniquely tailored stage.

The point is we don't know yet.

I've just kind of skimmed the last 3 pages or so, but it says you can review the footage. Maybe it records the whole match and lets you review it, but the maximum amount of video you can actually send is 3 minutes, so you have to find the segment you want in the match. I would imagine you can also do smaller than 3 minutes if you want.

Er, that doesn't matter. This is Smash. Melee matches, as I previously said, last around 2:30 - 4:30. I deleted most of my old videos so I don't have a large pool of videos to compare... used to have like 4 gigs of smash videos.

Anyway, with Brawl giving the player chances to last even longer than in Melee, matches will be longer. I don't want to go any lower than 3 stock to get my match recorded.

I'd say a limit of even 5 or 6 minutes could work.

That would be a pretty bullshit excuse considering all the other awesome shit getting pumped into the game, don't you think?

Besides, I'm not looking for excuses, I'm looking for fun. And the target challenge is always fun for me.

This time, there are five different maps of varying difficulty—challenges you can take on with your favorite character.
It's definitely leaning more toward five total than it is five per character.

There's something I don't really get.
When I read the update, I thought the 3 minute limit was for a single replay file. Which would mean a longer match could be cut into several files. Couldn't it work that way ? After all, since we can use SD Cards, the maximum storage capacity of the Wii itself isn't the limit.

Also I like how Wii-za "forgot" to mention the German translation. :D

But Sakurai doesn't say that specifically so we still don't know yet. But if you want to complain about something we don't know about, go right ahead. This is GAF after all! :lol

He didn't want to quote Sakurai summoning Dracula.

I'm wondering if you can start a second replay in the middle of a match after your initial three minutes are up. That way you could record a longer match in segments.

But we do know...

He says. Five stages. This is like the time someone tried to say that Mario's Tornado could still be a special move even though FLUDD was down-B and the blog even implied that the tornado was now mapped to a normal move. Yes, it's possible (hell I pointed it out on another forum and got shot down), but the chances are so slim it's not really worth considering for more than a second. \:

Will we get a Megaton of Christmas day?

"Merry Christmas! Instead of being able to play this yourselves this Christmas, here's a video of me and my family playing it instead!"

Although We don't even know if the Wii is capable of holding on to 5 or 6 minutes of a replay, that would be the ideal time to record smash matches. 3 is just too short.

Hi all,

I posted some Smash tidbits on my MTV blog today....

http://multiplayerblog.mtv.com/2007/10/24/how-i-dropped-the-ball-in-covering-super-smash-brothers-brawl-plus-3-possible-exclusives/

Cutting and pasting them here to add to the body of Smash knowledge:

1. The character Pit, from “Kid Icarus,” can jump four times. Even using this ability I was getting trounced by better players.

2. If you get trounced too much the game gives you a break, re-spawning the player in fully-charged and ready to deliver a Final Smash, a mercy-Final-Smash, as it were. If being bad at a game is what it takes for me to get the big scoop, then so be it.

3. The game’s assist trophies — Nintendo-themed bonus characters that can be used to supplement your attacks — include the girl from “Sin & Punishment.” I know this because I threw an assist trophy capsule and out she jumped, gunning down the enemy characters.

This game is insanely jam-packed with content, don't nitpick... be happy wiht some much content, they keep releasing new features... after all it's the Wii lol...

seriously the amount of content SSBB has in it is sickening :lol

I hope this can be disabled in the final. Maybe this is part of the handicap option.

I'm never going to do this again until, maybe, like a week before the Japanese release, but I went and took a mystical journey of info collection through the past to figure out whether we've really been having some lame weeks lately or what. Here are my findings.

Edit: And nobody better quote this whole post just to say "I agree, thanks" or something along those lines. This thing's enormous.

The history of megatons and Dojo updates

Megatons by general consensus:

May 22nd - The Musicians
June 8th - Four Kinds of Control
July 2nd - What is an Assist Trophy?
August 3rd - What is the Subspace Emissary?
August 13th - Pokemon Trainer
September 7th - My Music
September 18th - Wi-Fi Play
October 5th - Team (co-op adventure mode)
October 10th - Sonic
October 24th - (stealth) Replays

We've actually been accelerating in the number of megatons as time goes by.

And if I start accounting for less "canonical" and more personalized megatons, such as Lucas for Amir0x/Iam Canadian, Ike for whoever likes him, the insanity comprising the Wario Ware stage or Special Brawl mode (for mostly casuals, but I think everyone would have at least some fun with these), co-op Home-Run Contest for those who dedicate themselves to mastering it, the Snake codec conversations as fanservice to many MGS fans, etc., it actually tilts further in favor of more frequently getting better updates.

The first ten weeks of updates were actually very pedestrian, where The Musicians, Four Kinds of Control, and assist trophies were the notable megatons. I've underlined other things that I think general consensus would call very interesting (maybe not megatonish except to some individuals), take a look:

The first 10 weeks of updates:

1st week: The Musicians, Battlefield, basic rules, Mario, Link, Gooey Bomb, Pit
2nd week: Pit's moves, final smash mechanic, Mario's final smash, moving and shooting, Cracker Launcher, Delfino Plaza
3rd week: Yoshi's Story music, Poke Balls, Groudon, recovery mechanic, Kirby, Pikachu, Four Kinds of Control
4th week: Fox, Yoshi's Island stage, Ridley's theme, crates and barrels, Samus
5th week: Link's final smash, Pikachu's final smash, Wario, Fox's moves, Lylat Cruise
6th week: Zelda, Ocarina of Time medley, Banana Peel, names, Wario's moves
7th week: Assist trophies, Samurai Goroh, Bowser, Bowser's final smash, smash attack mechanic, Bridge of Eldin
8th week: Combos mechanic, Dr. Wright, Bumper, E3 movie, Donkey Kong, Smashville
9th week: Star Fox music, Deoxys, Samus' final smash, Zero Suit Samus, This World (storyline teaser)
10th week: Rumble Falls, Yoshi, Skyworld, Footstool Jump mechanic, Knuckle Joe

Yes, the first ten weeks of the 23 weeks we've had were indeed that bland. (Unless someone really wants to make a case that a lot more of the above than I'm giving credit to was incredibly great.) No wonder this thread has sped up drastically since the early days... News has been better. Just compare...

The 11th to 20th weeks:

11th week: Donkey Kong's final smash, Pitfall, Ike, Castle Siege, Subspace Emissary
12th week: Smoke Ball, Ike's moves, Kid Icarus music, Pit's final smash, Franklin Badge
13th week: Pokemon Trainer, Pokemon change, Devil, stickers, tether recovery mechanic, Peach
14th week: Link's moves, Subspace Army, Diddy Kong, Animal Crossing music, Yoshi's final smash, Petey Piranha
15th week: Superspicy Curry, Andross, special moves, Pokemon Trainer's moves, gliding mechanic, Wario Ware stage
16th week: Pit's Descent, Diddy Kong's moves, Meta Knight, Pokemon Stadium 2, Mario's moves, My Music, Pokemon Stadium/Evolution, SSBB main theme
17th week: Munchlax, Lyn, Battleship Halberd, Special Brawl, Ice Climbers
18th week: Golden Hammer, Wi-Fi Play, enemies of Subspace Emissary, Piplup, Snake, MGS4 Love Theme, Snake's moves
19th week: Trophies, Diddy Kong's final smash, Mr. Resetti, Pokemon Trainer's final smash, Tourney
20th week: Lucas, Snake movie, Shadow Moses Island stage, Snake codec videos, Excitebike, Lakitu, shielding and dodging mechanic, Fox's final smash, co-op Subspace Emissary

I really think things significantly improved here. Here's the beginning of our current set of ten weeks:

Weeks 21-22 and 60% of 23:

21st week: Zero Suit Samus' moves, Kirby's final smash, Ashley's theme, Cooking Navi music, Sonic, Sonic movie, conference movie, Sonic's moves, Delay/E For All notice, Taking Snapshots
22nd week: New Pork City, Home-Run Contest, Meowth, Wiimote controls, Little Mac, Peach's final smash
23rd week to date: PictoChat stage, Donkey Kong movie, break the targets, Replays

In hindisght, I'd say things are actually going fairly smoothly compared to the past. I don't know if weeks 21-30 will manage to top weeks 11-20--that's a tall order--but it really hasn't been as bad as I thought.

This time, you can view replays.

This says we can view replays. "Replays" is plural. This lends me to believe that there will be multiple files to pick and watch.

What this means is, the game records what you did in brawls or in Target Smash and lets you review it.

"Brawls" is also plural. Wouldn't he have said "in a brawl match" if you could really only save about 1 match worth of footage? The wording is very tricky.

You can record about three minutes worth of replay data.

This tells me that there is a difference between the replays and the record function.

Perhaps the game saves more footage than 3 minutes, and you can only send about 3 minutes at a time. After all, why would he say "you" if he's already said the game "records" the matches automatically.

Yeah, i was pondering this today. It would seem awkward to only allow you to have 3 minutes worth of replay. I mean, would you pause in the middle of a game, then tell it to "record now", and it'd go for 3 minutes? That'd be a dumb way to implement a replay function. The more I think about it, it makes sense if it meant only recording 3 minutes of a replay that was already saved and sending it through wifi.

Sounds more and more like Halo 3. So everything is automatically saved, but you can then go into those and record parts and then send that to your friends (in H3's case, upload to your file share). If so, then that'd be pretty good.

This again? Haven't you guys learned that putting this under your semantical microscope is really dumb? Just take it at face value.

Haven't you learned that it doesn't really matter what you say, we (meaning everyone else) will do whatever to fill the time between the beginning of time and Feb 10th. Speculation is OK in my book.

Replays is a megaton for me!

I don't think we can determine what the function will actually consist of, though. Not only is it a translation, but it's probably been left deliberately vague. Best-case scenario would be the same as Halo 3 does (except with functional play/ffw/rew controls), and the ability to save up to 3 minutes at a time to an actual video file and/or game replay save. What we actually get will probably fall short of that, but it's obviously going to be the best the team can get out of the Wii hardware (after all it's doing for the game itself, of course).

These guys are my heroes. No game has ever had this much fan service baked in. :D

今回、“リプレイ”ができます。

Japanese does not have plurals, the literal Japanese sentence says "This time, (you) can 'replay'", but that does not make sense in English, extra grammatical constructions are necessary.

記録時間は約3分。

The Japanese says "(the) recording time is about 3 minutes." The extra wording is there to make it sound more natural in English.

This is why it's stupid. You cannot analyze a translation in that sort of detail. There's no grammatical trickery. Keep in mind this is also written as a blog not a fine-combed scientific essay.

I know what you mean. When I was reading the Japaneses this morning, I felt like it didn't help much.

I honestly feel like the team is listening to fans and implementing stuff into the game because of us and I wouldn't be suprised if word from Gaf gets to him(we are one of the more known and read game forums) so you never know if people from Treehouse give him word from what we say. So I say, complaining is both good and bad, I mean, you should be thankful about the replays but yeah, would it be better to have full match replays? Hell yes. Voice Chat? Fuck yes. We should let em know, but yeah, don't complain about everything and make Sakurai keep delaying it to satisfy us lol.

They're limited to 3 minutes, which sucks. Good for stadium, which doesn't interest me, bad for match replays.

My saving graces are usually in the last minute, so thats pretty cool.

What im thinking is:

When a match starts, everything gets recorded, then at the end you can view a reply and make 3 minutes or so of footage cutting parts, but tbh I have no idea
