Nintendo's top selling franchises actually looks more like this:
Mario, Zelda, Pokemon, Smash Bros., and Animal Crossing.
Stumpokapow covered the necessary Nintendogs addition, but I think Kirby needs a mention as well.
Assuming Wikipedia has its sources right...
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_best-selling_video_games
Kirby Super Star (1.1 million in Japan)
Kirby 64: The Crystal Shards (1.07 million in Japan)
Kirby's Dream Land 2 (1.49 million in Japan)
Kirby's Dream Land (1.45 million in Japan)
Kirby's Pinball Land (1.12 million in Japan)
Kirby: Nightmare in Dreamland (1.12 million in US)
Kirby: Squeak Squad (1.73 million)
It's a million seller almost every time just in Japan alone. No idea what it sells in Europe, but if it's like every other Nintendo series it's probably not that much worse. As for the US, there's only one figure in here, but it's
also a million-seller--and that's despite Nightmare in Dreamland being a GBA remake. Wouldn't surprise me if the series turns out frequent million-sellers in the US individually as well.
Another reason it wouldn't surprise me: one of the few DS games Nintendo has brought to Korea so far is Kirby Squeak Squad. To bank on that, they must be seeing some kind of good sales for the series from their own internal data.
Plus several Kirby games like Dreamland 3, Amazing Mirror, and Canvas Curse haven't been accounted for. I really think Kirby is Nintendo's most underestimated franchise.
