I'm not quite ready to call Ridley a shoe-in yet, but his chances have definitely been improved. So far, the highest ranking poll characters are making it in. Geno's a bit of an oddball because Square owns him, but of the first-party characters, Ridley has a very good shot. He may even be the next newcomer revealed.

We definietly need another Mario rep (Melee had 5, and if we lose Dr.Mario, Brawl so far has 4) because Brawl will not have less than Melee.
I'm guessing the new rep will be either Bowser Jr. or Waluigi. I'm hoping for the latter but it could be both.

We got Solid Snake, I dont' think anyone wanted Lara Croft, and Cloud doesn't make any sense in a Nintendo all star game (bit part in KH on GBA, whatever). I don't htink anyone is missing on the poll that US would have asked for more. If anything, you'd think Ridley would be the US only request, but he's high on the poll. I guess Little Mac, but they clearly considered him before bumping him to AT. Not enough moves I guess.
Cecil and Kain are in the Square fighting game, so don't expect them. IF SE gets a rep I bet it will be someone who was in Mario Basketball 3 on 3 (Black Mage, Moogle, Chocobo), a Nintendo fan icon (Geno, Chrono) or Slime.

Although... wow. If this actually holds up, that would leave us with 37 total character updates, which almost matches my prediction for how many characters I think will be in the game at all.
So I'm going to go ahead and adjust down a bit. Because, technically, the rate has slowed down a bit. >_> Not much, but slightly. Three of the first four weeks had two characters each, after all.
So, to look at things another way, we've gotten 17 character updates in the last 19 weeks. That would put us at a character per 1.12 weeks (19/17), which would leave us with 12.5 more character updates by February 1st. Still a good number.

Why does my gut tell me that Bowser Jr. won't be in it but all of the Koopa kids will be where they just count as one character? That is what I want too. Having someone from Tomato Adenture would be pretty freakin sweet. I want more obscuro characters so that we can have threads demanding their return to their own videogames.

Yes, yes it is! Holy crap... some people have been throwing around the number "40" in regards to the total number of characters... but that always seemed far-fetched to me. (Even if Sakurai did mention it as a possibility at one point).
I mean... 40. 40!!! Think about how many freaking characters that is. The fact that it is becoming a real possibility... wow.

The game you noted is called Dissidia, but personally, even with Dissidia being in development, I do not discount the idea of Cecil and Kain's appearance, and for several reasons, one of them being FF4 DS's imminent release later this winter in Japan, making the game relevant again, and opening the characters to a younger generation.
This, if anything, instantly creates mindshare and appreciation for the characters, just as Roy and Marth did for the US audience towards Fire Emblem.
The only problem I see from this happening is the two parties not talking about possibilities.

I would have expected 40 characters from the beginning, since SSBM added 14 characters (or 13 if Sheik doesn't count), and adding just another 14 would get to 40, but then Sakurai went and said some characters would be cut...
After reading that, I figured 35 sounded more reasonable because I expected that around 3-5 characters would be dropped. But oh no, we're well past the point of expecting 35.
The fact that we know 11 newcomers already is mind-blowing when compared to SSBM's total newcomers...

This isn't really the poll's result, it's based on the messages that Sakurai chose to show on his website.
As much as I like Dede, I would rather have Sakurai ditch all the third and fourth characters in a single franchise and have him include more characters from franchises we haven't seen in SSB before. The Mario franchise has Mario, Peach, Bowser, Yoshi, Wario and probably Luigi, Legend of Zelda has Link, Zelda and Ganon and now Kirby has King Dede and Meta Knight added. I'd like to see a Smash Bros. where the biggest Nintendo franchises get two characters max, so that there'd room for original offerings like Captain Olimar, Chibi Robo, Andy, Little Mac, Tom Nook, Dr Kawashima, Kensuke Kimachi and F-Type from Stunt Race FX.

Dedede is an awesome fucking addition. Now my two favorite Kirby characters are in. The only problem, now, is that I'm going to have a harder time choosing between metaknight and him. :S

It's not as if Dedede is just there for the "sake" of it. He has as much, if not more, right to be in than Metaknight.

It seems that the purpose of the series is absurdity. Captain Falcon and Mister Game And Watch were unknown quantities, combat-wise, and things like Kid Icarus, Ice Climbers, and Zelda are all 1-note characters when it comes to fighting. I don't want "Mario Boxing." I want Mister Resetti impaling Crystalis Guy with a pickaxe.

A CO character could be cool.
Andy's A moves would involve the wrench, while his B moves would call assorted AW units to help him (with a limit of units on screen at once, of course). Final Smash, obviously, would be the CO power, healing + power up, for Andy himself and the units that he has called.

Well, ten bucks Dark Samus is just a seperate costume for Samus. Although I don't know how they'd change up the Zero Suit Samus after Samus' final smash.
