SMH on how good Mario Odyssey looks

Reposting this for every person who seems to be missing the damn point of the post.

OP is lamenting they will, in their mind, never make a game as good as Mario. They want to try making games, but seeing this stuff discourages them from trying.

Props for those who took the time to actually understand it.

It's not as ridiculous as it seems tho

Odyssey is built by devs with a lifetime of experience making good games, and also built off a working formula that's been getting tweaked since 1996. And seeing as its mainline Mario, they probably are also working with a blank check

And although I personally enjoyed Sunshine, since everyone else hates it then it's safe to assume that, at times, even Nintendo will fuck it up.

Outside of the possible misuse of SMH, I'm pretty sure 75% of you guys didn't actually read the OP:

I don't think he's saying he'll never make a game as good as Mario in general, just that the amount of work and creativity required to make a game where you have your own varied controls and move set, but on top of that have to prepare player controls and movesets for dozens of (if not more) enemies and objects is staggering.

But you barely spend any time in the transformations, and most of them have fairly short limits?

You're Mario, except for the 5-10 seconds you're a Bullet Bill to get across a gap.

The only one I've seen with a time limit is the Bullet Bill. Everything else they've shown so far lasts as long as you need it.

You actually can't control every enemy. Just the ones specifically designated by the devs.

It seems like you can control most, but yeah not all of them. But you can also control lots of objects and NPCs in addition to enemies.

I actually do know exactly what you mean despite the way you expressed it :P They just make it look effortless.

Nontendo prototypes a lot. They build 100 prototypes of fun actions Mario could do, throw out 95 of them and build a level around the 5 that were fun. Repeat for next level. The enemy designs all are designed accordingly and a world view is built around that.

I dont think you need to be discouraged. I think indies pull off pretty unique things and the market is pretty good and varied for aspiring developers.

This is a ridiculous thread where people can't wrap their head around the idea of someone shaking their head in disbelief over how good something looks. It's a little ironic, but it's not so far beyond the scope of understanding that we need three pages discussing what SMH means.

Remember when 'disgusting' became a description for an awesome skateboard trick? Or how something 'sick' is good?

OP is allowed to shake his head in amazement. Yeesh.

But yes, it is just another thread praising how good SMO looks.

SMH this game looks great gameplay wise but visually it looks alright. Lack of anti alising is a bummer also it's 720p. Here's hoping they can raise the resolution by release
Anti aliasing is not that impressive from a programming perspective, just requires power. oP was talking about how hard it would be to program the take things over with your hat ability.

Yea it looks pretty good.

I am concerned about everything shown that doesn't fall under "Action Platformer" (Galaxy, 3D World). While I believe in "Adventure Platformer" (its potential), that side of Odyssey has yet to impress me. Even the action designed to make the Capture mechanic shine is a bit unimpressive. The cool part is in the fact that you can capture so many things. However, captures feel too isolated instead of players being required to combine them in sequence (with great degree of creative freedom afforded to players) to complete a single challenge scenario (moment to moment ACTION gameplay between the exploration that is to constitute Adventure Platformer). Rather than requiring players to choose their captures in sequence (and with proper timing) as if part of a combo system to either survive or solve some puzzle, there's just this moment to moment privilege of "since I can do this, might as well try it". Yes, "Try Me" instead of "Max Chain Max Chain Max Chain Max Chain Scruffy Scruffy Scruffy Max Chain" (Ikaruga fan here).

edit:

I originally responded because I figured you hadn't seen enough of the game if your conclusion is that captures feel too straightforward, like they're individual keys which go to individual locks, when I've seen gameplay scenarios that suggest otherwise.
I understand now however that you're just not that captivated by watching open, adventure-platformer style Mario. Yes, this style of Mario game is about 'since I can do this, might as well try it'. That's the beauty of these games, trying some shit you'd never expect to work and watching with glee as oh wow it worked. It's why I keep bringing up Shifting Sand Lands and Peach's Slide in these threads - because this game is slathered in moments like those two I just mentioned. If you're looking for tight platforming gauntlets, well, they're there, you just gotta look a bit harder. If you're looking for tough and interconnected use of multiple capture mechanics, I haven't seen much of that yet, but you can bet your butt that shit's coming in the later maps.

Yeah, this kind of 3D Mario is all about "try me" with a little dose of "complete this" sprinkled in. Whereas with other Mario games it tends to be the other way around.

Many of us understood this, but being amazed / bewildered by the game's breadth and scope still doesn't work with SMH. SMH is basically ALWAYS being used with disapproval of something.

OP just needs to relax and go look at games like Prey or [Prototype] or Dishonored or Kameo or Everything which all have similar systems.

Looks like my GOAT Mario game so i agree with you OP. It looks like Mario 64 and Super Mario Galaxy made a baby and made the perfect Mario game.

I like this a whole lot.

I love how they used Link Between Worlds idea and turned it up by a 100.
