Smoking In Games

Scrow

Still Tagged Accordingly
Recently Disney announced that it would ban all smoking in their films.

This got me to thinking about the depiction of smoking in video games.

How prevalent is it?

What're the most notable occurrences?

Is there paid product placement for cigarette brands in video games?

Should game companies ban smoking in their titles too?

Pretty rare.

An interesting usage though is Metal Gear Solid wherein you can smoke an then blow smoke to see alarm lasers but it harms your health.

It's all about context. So long as the Snake isn't saying, "HAY KIDS, SMOKE!" then it shouldn't be a concern. He uses them to see invisible trip wires - crucial to completing his mission - so it really isn't a problem there.

Smoking is fine if its fits in and adds character. If it does nothing then well it shouldn't be there.

Curious, is Disney including their Miramax and Touchstone line of movies on their smoking ban?

The news story says so, which makes me wonder what Tarantino is going to do. Most of the characters in his films smoke.

I'm pretty sure you could have Snake's knock-out spray cigar in MGS3 equipped to have him chainsmoking through all of the cutscenes.

Looking at the StarCraft 2 sp video they're all smoking and drinking. Raynor even has a Marlboro lookalike in his sleeve.

I remember a screenshot someone did of MGS1 where Snake's puffing a cig with his back to a crate that says "NO SMOKING" at the top of it.

What they're going to do is replace all the cigarettes in their older films with walkie talkies.

"Push-to-Talk Menthols; it's the KOOL way"

I can picture the giant rolling micky mouse up into a hay made walkie talkie right now

It's not as prevalent in games as it is in movies. I'm surprised we haven't seen more characters smoking actually.
It eats up a lot of valuable pixels to put a cigarette in a characters mouth, if the player could even see it.

I'm playing Vampire Bloodlines at the moment and that's got a few smokers in it. Fits in perfectly with the seedy nature of that game though. I like those sort of gritty realistic-within-their-own-world type games. I wouldn't expect to see Mario smoke but that's no reason to get all hardcore on banning the cancer sticks from video games or somesuch.

It's ****ing hilarious that smoking is so taboo these days when alcohol, a far bigger killer both directly and indirectly, is practically embraced by all and sundry.

I heard that future initiatives being looked at are to airbrush cigarettes from old films / record covers etc. Imagine all of those Humphrey Bogart films when they've been "touched up" by the P.C Brigade. :lol

Band of Brothers:

(artillery shell lands near two soldiers and doesn't explode)

x - "..."

* - "..."

x - "Gimmie that."

* - "...But you don't smoke"

x - "I know. *lights up*"

*************

I know I butchered it, but I love that scene.

But you can only take a certain number before you get cancer and have to restart the game.

If you keep smoking, you gain super powers and your muscles grow. I'm sick of these anti-smoking ads that are everywhere. I think everyone gets the point that smoking is bad already.

I doubt it, since half the people who start smoking are too stupid to know that it's bad for them. Anyway, thinning the gene pool, eh?

Don't kill me

:lol :lol :lol

Everybody who smokes 'to be cool' in either movies or games looks exactly the ****ing same. That's how lame it is.

I'm replaying Breath of Fire III and I was surprised to see characters smoking, and lots of them, in a game with 2d cutesy sprites and rated T.... they'd never let that today

there's also a lot of characters drinking and already drunk, and even an item called Vodka Shot that you can use when your characters are not even 10 years old :lol

Insert emo antihero here

"HEY, _____! Where's the money you owe me!"
"______, you really need to stop drinking"

Tarantino's with The Weinstein Company now, not Miramax. Ditto Kevin Smith and Robert Rodriguez. [/offtopic]

You'd be suprised. I work on the anti-tobacco account for the state of Louisiana, it's one of my clients. And the numbers show that 30% of smokers under the age of 40 don't think smoking is actually bad for you. And even more than that don't believe 2nd-hand smoke is bad for you/anyone else around you.

Well then sucks to be then.

And don't forget. When you have Snake smoking, he's constantly dying. So it's telling the kids something about the act.
