Smoking In Games

smoking should be stamped out in ALL games imo, just sends the wrong signal to kids when their hero is smoking on screen.

I'm pretty sure you could have Snake's knock-out spray cigar in MGS3 equipped to have him chainsmoking through all of the cutscenes.
I have to go replay the game and try that out now. :lol

As somebody who works for Disney, I'm curious as to whether this applies to the games divisions as well. Time to go a'digging.

Or we could just drop the ridiculous ****ing idea that all games are for kids? I mean, aren't adults supposed to have any entertainment to themselves according to the american PC army? **** that.

There's worse things going on in games than smoking and few if any "hero" characters smoke in games. Usually the smoker is an antihero, evil enemy, or a support character.

But what about Snake!

This thread reminds me of the racism in games thread for some odd reason

HAha I'll have to try that too. It was fun changing his costume/camo for cut scenes.

No smoking in Turok then? ;) You guys should sneek in some smoking cut-scenes and see what they do.

You've got it 100% right.

Now I'm off to beat up some hookers and snipe people from the top of a building. :lol

[Edit - for the record I agree that someone like Mario shouldn't smoke, but if one of the gears of war guys wants a smoke he should be free to. :D ]

I had a teacher who had such a strong Scottish accent she said "No Smirking" and "Smirking will kill yer bebees"

Made me chuckle.

If Joseph Turok isn't puffing a stogie, I'm calling you out. Don't know what'll happen after, but there you go.

You'd be suprised. I work on the anti-tobacco account for the state of Louisiana, it's one of my clients. And the numbers show that 30% of smokers under the age of 40 don't think smoking is actually bad for you. And even more than that don't believe 2nd-hand smoke is bad for you/anyone else around you.
Maybe I am just ignorant to how stupid people can be but I can't imagine it being like that everywhere.

Seriously, sick of that shit. It's the ****ing politicians corrupting these peoples thinking.

if you're weak minded and stupid enough to decide to smoke because you saw it in a video game / movie, you probably deserved to get cancer anyways.

that statistic is specifically for the state of Louisiana. We also run 2nd in illiteracy right behind new mexico. And New Orleans was previously viewed as one of the number 1 worst school system in the United States. Since the hurricane however, most of the housing projects haven't re-opened, and a huge number of public schools have remained closed, so that stat may be changing.

To put things in perspective.

But when a smoker is trying to quit, reminders should be avoided whenever possible. I know from experience. The first 2 weeks of quitting is a crap-shoot.

Disney owns THQ?

Edit: Nevermind.

thats too bad. was the survey done very well? I could understand 40% of people believing it won't happen to them or that they don't smoke enough to have severe effects.

Being the worst school system by itself doesn't mean a lot. How well the school can prepare youth for life does. My school was in the high fourties out of fifty here in British Columbia, Canada but we still had some very smart students get lots of scholarships and go to the best universities available.

don't you guys get the horrible pictures covering half the cigarette pack there?

Trust me, New Orleans public schools are terrible, and generally thought to be the root of 50% of all problems in New Orleans. And I'm not sure of how the survey was carried out, I just had the results in a case study. The problem with the New Orleans school system was that you could be 21 and still in high-school. So drug dealers would intentionally fail and plague a high school class just to continue selling drugs on campus. And you can imagine how little fear a 21 year old would have of faculty. They basically ran the public school system till the city put police officers at every school all day long and metal detectors to check for guns/knives. There is a lot about New Orlean's school system the country doesn't know about. The year of that Columbine shooting, we had 3 seperate school shootings that never made the national news because they were predominetly black public schools.

You better look for it, because they might have made cheerleaders mandatory at the same time.

Damn smoking sure is evil. Smoking should just be banned from everything. We should all just assume that little kids are so impressionable as to re-enact everything they see because surely seeing a character in a videogame with a cigarette would cause the poor unknowing child to light up at a moment's notice.

Such bullshit. People will smoke if they want to, end of story.

Goofy used to smoke like a freight train. You can see a lot of old cartoons with him smoking in Epcot's lung cancer exhibit.

Walt did say he didn't make his stuff for children. There could be some nice attacks built around smoking in some games - It'd be sort of cool for Sam Fisher, for example, to ask for a light and then break the guy while he's distracted.
