SNK's Athena & Kensou mark their 30th anniversary this year

In 1986 SNK released 2 arcade games with a rather interesting twist; their protagonist shared the same name, even being speculated to be the very same character, but their settings are quite different.

The first game was simply titled Athena
Where you played as a bikini-clad warrior princess who goes about killing monsters and stuff to bring back peace to the world.
The game would get an NES release as well.

The character seemed to have been quite popular such that SNK made a 2nd game featuring her titled Psycho Soldier, some months after the release of Athena.

What makes this game so interesting is that when you start the first stage an actual honest to god song is playing in the background, lyrics and all. In the JP release it was sung by Kaori Shimizu-

Gameplay-wise it was a 2D 'shooting' action game, and was the debut game for Kensou who merely served as player 2, and donning dat authentic 80s heroic Rambo crimson bandana.

Now I don't know how many arcade games during the 80s featured actual vocal songs in them, but this game had to stand out for the time at least.

In Crystalis, 2 of the sages are named after Athena and Kensou.

Personally...I couldn't care less about Athena, and what's weird is that she wouldn't make a comeback until 10ish years later in KoF 94 as part of team China, and then from then on to be known as the Psycho Soldier theme.
Regardless Athena does not necessarily pre-date Samus; Metroid released in 1986. However seeing as she, Nako, Terry and Kyo make up the mascots of SNK, I figure I'd shed some light on the fact that she's been around longer than any of us ever thought.

As Kensou, I gotta say I never cared for the dude until KoF XI, I really liked his changes in that game as well as his XII and XIII incarnation. Before that, he was the kid with the funky looking kick attacks, and that one unique intro with Robert in KoF 97 (both their VAs speak with a Kansai dialect).

The original Athena, now referred to as Princess Athena, would return in SNK vs. Capcom Chaos as a boss character, then be made playable in Neo Geo Battle Coliseum.
Athena and Kensou have both been, for the most part, mainstays of the main KoF games and have had their fans enjoy playing as them ever since, and for decades more.

Did anyone here ever get the chance to play the games in arcades or consoles when they originally released? What're your memories from playing the original games at least?

Kensou has been my dude since kof 95. Hes gone through a bunch of changes throughout the series

Uh, for some reason, never knew it was the same Athena than in KoF.
Never played those games, they probably didn't age well.

As I recall, the NES version is a really glitchy mess. It was fun to try (only a few years ago, I can't imagine having the patience to try this game as a kid).

I came across an Athena (NES) fansite and the guy didn't even know of Athena's history outside the one game.

EDIT: LOVE that Psycho Soldier theme. Really looking forward to seeing what they do for the team in KoF XIV.

I can't actually think of any others which did this at the time. Plenty with game speech, but none with a vocal soundtrack. Even later on it was uncommon, the finest example is probably Violent Storm which has a couple of vocal tracks in there but B.Rap Boys is worth checking out too.

Interesting note when they made the US/World version of Psycho Soldier they actually re-recorded the soundtrack in English.

Konami put the TMNT theme song with vocals in the first arcade game from 1989 I believe, so for them it was already commonplace by the time Violent Storm was made.

The original arcade version of Daytona USA had no CD music (unlike the later console ports) but still had prominent vocals. What's significant here is that the vocals are cut up and super optimized to fit into the memory limitations of the sequenced music. It sounds kind of hilarious.

Probably in the minority, but I wish Kensou went back to his old plain/jacket shorts look. Part of what I liked about the design of the characters is that most of them are just wearing regular clothes.

Athena has been one of my main since i start playing SNK games .
Can't wait to see how she is in KOF14 and Psycho Soldier theme rocks lol .

I never really put into perspective that Athena's an older character than Terry, Marco, Ralf, etc...

Great writeup. Sadly I never played the original arcade games but I always loved the presence that Athena and Kensou added to KoF. Maybe someday he'll be able to eat a bun without getting indigestion.

I will say that while it was a nice touch that they tried going back to the Psycho Soldier designs for KOFXII, it was pretty jarring how Athena turned from a fairly standard teenage design into a total moeblob. Kensou didn't look bad but I agree the post a bit above that the "regular guy" aspect of his KOF look gave him a lot of charisma.

Dat NeoGeo Battle Coliseum art!...

Her sprites getting just a color change between KoFXII and XIII was XIII's biggest disappointment.

Athena was one of my big mistake purchases in the NES days. It was such a shitty game.

Of course back then the graphics were so bad that I didn't realize she fought monsters in a bikini with her ass crack sticking out.

Great characters, always enjoyed their interactions in the previous KOFs.

Can't wait to see what they look like in KOFXIV.

I always thought he looked like a dork in his Psycho Soldier makeover used in XII and XIII, so I also preferred his old attire. Still bothered even more by how SNKP stopped trying with Athena's outfits after 2003, and have just gone with putting her in schoolgirl uniforms since XI, Psycho Soldier throwback and recolor included (seeing them actually putting forth an effort again in XIV would be nice).

I think he looking like a dork is fitting, but I just really like prefer his old attire, most of the characters having Normal clothes kind of gave the series an "urban" feel, for lack of a better term. Some characters in XIV got new costumes, so Kensou will probably get one too.

Holy Shit!!

I never realised Athena's Theme from King of Fighters actually came from the original Psycho Soldier game.

Revelation needs to go in the Little Known Gaming Surprises thread alongside Super Mario Bros clouds & bushes.

Hah! Kensou is spelt Kensu and the vocal track in Psycho Soldier speeds up and slows down according to the on-screen action. Gotta love the 80's.

True, he basically is a dork character-wise. But yes, I do believe that going with something more casual allowed him to fit in better with the series' aesthetic.

Developer interview from 1993 about the Athena game.

Some developer comments lol:

Kohyan (Planner/Producer) – “I hate Athena!” That’s what I thought when, right after the first game, it was decided that we’d have to start working on this sequel. If they come to me now asking for a third game… ugh, I don’t even want to think about it.

Wasabi (Character Designer) – Goddammmmmmn, I’m exhausted! Goodnight.

Koutoubu (Character Designer) – Psycho Soldier…… here’s what I got out of these last 6 months: a lack of sleep, a habit of sleepwalking, a taste for energy drinks, and belly fat. What I lost? My girlfriend. Ugh. Give me my youth back!!!

Manbou Kimura (Character Designer) – So tired so tired so tired so tired so tired so tired so tired so tired so tired so tired so tired so tired so tired so tired so tired so tired so tired so tired so tired so tired so tired so tired so tired so tired so tired so tired

Aran Lee (BGM Composer)
– Fail, fail, fail, fail, fail. Look, another fail! A storm of fails. Under a cold winter sky in the dead of night, I trudgingly make my way to the last train home. This is supposed to be the time when I make my mark on the world, but I’m just spinning my wheels… spin, spin my life away. How can I escape this…?

Kenny Nishida (theme/ending song composer) – I’m Kenny, the guy who made Athena a superstar singer and made her All-Japan Tour dream a reality.

John Guso (Programmer)
– For the big lizard enemy and final boss Shigu Do Dabide, don’t just look at their heads! There’s some subtle movement in their necks that you really should see. It is my masterpiece.

KKC (Programmer) – This was my first game programming challenge. The long battle is finally over. At this moment, I can really feel how far my health has declined. Am I really an old man at 24? Cherish your youth, everyone… it only comes once.

Another reminder of how much I love 80's/90's anime (well, the art at least).

Yes Yes Yes <3<3<3

As someone who grew up with 80s anime i miss the colors and soft lines that vanished in the late 90s

Half the reason i used to buy old EGM's was because at the time it was the only way to find any artwork like that.

Athena was always my jam in the arcades - later I played her in KoF though I wasn't sure at first if she was the same character until an EGM verified it.

The artstyle coupled with the outfit gives me a very "Urusei Yatsura" vibe. I wonder if that was an influence on them?
It's possible, but that was just the general style at the time; anime as a whole moved to more complex design with angular lines in the mid 90's.

What's funny is that I grew up (in a manner of speaking) with late 90's anime. But once I got tired of it, I ended up growing really fond of the art from earlier, probably a lot to do with me collecting a lot of old Dragon Quest books and such.

Sadly I only learned about her much later. Athena and Psycho Soldier were not available in our arcade malls.
Though in the arcades I had another heroine:

Regarding Psycho Soldier I learned that a similar game was popular where I lived
Considering I had watched the movie Locke the Superman back then, I'd have instantly loved anything to do with psychics

When I was a kid I found a copy of Athena for NES on the back of the public bus. I was so happy, a free NES game out of nowhere?! I took it home and I've been conflicted about that day ever since.

Sie Kensou, the true Friend Zone king.

Everyone knows that Athena is gonna hook up with Jhun Hoon lol

The KoF 95 Ending still is a favorite "WTH?" moment for me. Made it easy for the Psycho Soldiers to endear themselves to me.

And lets not forget the PS1 game!

Athena_Awakening_From_The_Ordinary_.jpg

I think I kinda mained her back in 94/95 original releases. My brother was always a fan of Kensou, and I've always respected him as a character (with a never-ever-resolving Dragon Power Storyline) over time. I eventually shifted to being more of a Chin player, with that becoming a LIFETIME MEMBERSHIP as of KoF XII, shifting about in the weird 99-2003 years.

Oh, specific shoutout to Shining Crystal Bit being the best "Soul Sphere" Super. Hitting the person with the initial summon as a reversal, and THEN landing the thrown fireball also, was always a high point in those old arcade play days. "It's like 2 supers!"

I love the fact that XII / XIII's Kensou is a fleshed out version of his Psycho Soldier look. In a 3D game like XIV, I hope he gets that and an updated vatiation on his Jeans casual looks. As much as people notice Athena's shifting attire, he's gone through quite a few variations as well.

I found this little element in the interview BadWolf linked earlier interesting, too.

—By the way, what became of Athena after the events of the game?

SNK: Hmmm… here goes.

Having safely defeated the evil Emperor Dante of Fantasy World, Athena returns to the Kingdom of Victory and lives as a normal girl for awhile. Her tomboyish nature, however, remains unchanged, and she has many adventures (the details of which, due to a decree by the King restricting the dissemination of such information, I’m not at liberty to divulge). Eventually she marries, has many children, and lives a blessed life of happiness and contentment. Her favorite magazine is “suteki na okusan” (“The Perfect Wife”) and she loves to sing Momoe Yamaguchi at karaoke. The female descendants of the Asamiya family also have ESP power…

…how’s that sound?

I remember hearing KoF Athena is suppose to be in Goddess Athena's bloodline, and I like how interwoven the "2 characters" end up being. Much like how AoF's Eiji and Last Blade's Zantetsu are said to be from the same bloodline. I'll always like how KoF XII's Athena was a bit of a stylistic throwback to 80's more shapely variant, and think that's more of a defining part of her than the "moe" aspects.

He probably gave that "ending" as almost a joke in passing, but it seems like SNKP views that as the true ending, after all.

Aww, congrats Athena and Friends! I've always loved the goofy banter between Kensou and Athena. Also I'm a bit biased being a Super Sentai fan but I liked Sato Tamao's KOF '96 voice for Athena best.

I recently played the NES game and it was horrible. You can improve Athena by collecting equipment, but you can also accidentally pick up inferior equipment again which is mind–boggling bad game design. I wonder if the arcade version is actually fun to play?

Btw, I love this cover from the english version of the theme, made by a christian rock band, the cover improves the song a lot since the original english singer seems like could't give less of a crap while singing

Figure Now　　　Would be　best to　do this

I know it's not quite the same thing, but the extra little bonus theme in KoF XI is nice too.

The feels, the memories.

Liked Athena from the early Neo Geo Pocket games, forgot why I liked her, played CardFighters Clash hated that bitch and Kensou, that combination plus Kensou Muffin abuse, later on started to enjoy her again in KOF entries. Didn't give a fuck about Kensou besides hate until KOFXII when they gave my boy the Kung Fu swagger he needed.
