Snowboard Kids DS $20 @ EB/GS

As usual, Atlus did not do a good job of getting review copies out to the press. We did finally get one, so there will be a review at PGC within a week or so.

What are you talking about? Atlus is spectacular in getting review copies out--and usually ships them VERY early.

It's okay... not really a snowboard game, more of a racing game... magic shots are a bitch to dodge.... CPU gangs up on human player... biggest problem is there aren't a lot of courses (7) and it only takes like 4 hours to beat / unlock everything.

Really more of a rental type game unless you grab 4 copies for WiFi play... but then, if that's your bag, shouldn't you be playing Mario Kart instead? (Snowboard Kids is kinda like Mario Kart on the slopes, without net play)

They have been getting better lately, but it's still hit or miss for us. Apparently other sites have had trouble too...I doubt GameSpot would have waited this long for their review if they had a copy, but it could have been lost in the holiday shuffle.

There are a million and a half fan sites out there asking companies for review copies, so I imagine companies probably have precident over who they make sure gets a copy quickly and who doesn't.

That's just a stab in the dark, however, because we've never had a problem over at my corner of the net.

Run, dont walk, to Mario Kart DS

Even though I got this because I didnt buy the N64 originals, this game just doesnt have that same polish or feel to it. The older kids look is fine, but the gameplay is nowhere near as solid. Basically you just do tricks to get item shots and the only way to dodge them is to jump and spin. Pretty easy to dodge, by the way.

Are there unlockables?

Like finish so and so race, get this...thing.
Yes, although most of them are things you'd like to be unlocked from the get go. 3 extra characters, 6 upgraded boards, an alternate costume for each character, two alternate board decal sets, 2 upgraded magic shots, some cheats, and you also have to purchase 4 of the game's 7 levels before they're available outside the world tour mode. All items are purchased from a shop using the points you earn from performing tricks while playing. In general, everything is 50,000 or 100,000 points. You get about that much from finishing any of the 3 world tour tournaments, or by playing through a single course slalom twice.

Sounds like an "average" assortment of unlockable, but really it's not--I unlocked everything but the final cheat code set (999,999 pts) in about 4 hours.

By no means is Snowboard Kids DS bad, but between a few annoying design choices, the lack of glitz, and relative dearth of content, it just doesn't pop the way you'd hope it would. Like I said before, it comes off as Mario Kart on downhill courses. Unfortunately for SBK, Mario Kart DS is better designed, more fleshed out, and more fun to watch. Every time I play SBK, I quickly develop the urge to play Mario Kart DS.
