Snowden: NSA employees routinely pass around intercepted nude photos

Huh? The NSA has literally already admitted this sort of thing happens. They even have a joking name for it (LOVEINT).

Snowden is just editorializing on why it's bad, and how it's unavoidable given that all the data is automatically collected.

I have no doubt it happens, just how odd it is to characterize as "routine" without any sort of measuring of it. It's just a strange "revelation" from Snowden.

Please tell me that the UK is out of reach of the NSA.

The only person I want perverting over my naked body would be my future waifu... once I find her.

Every Friday at my job, someone brings in bagels, cream cheese, and fruit for the office at breakfast time. I'd describe that activity as routine. What did you want him to do, document and describe in detail every lewd joke ever shared over months/years?

Of course they do, same as the TSA agents who were passing around images from the naked body scanners. Our privacy's in shreds and nobody cares.

Obama officially campaigned on the premise that govt whistle-blowers will be rewarded, not punished. I believe it's bigger than him, but he could still pardon him if he felt like it.
He also campaigned on government transparency and 4th amendment rights.

It's pretty clear where he actually stands on this stuff by now.

Like the McDonalds slogan.

"I'm LOVEINT"

hey, if you don't want your nudes out there then dont take nudes and send them out. just assume that anything that hits the internet is unfortunately being seen by someone else.

I really should get a job on a spy agency. Everyday one hour serious work, and seven hour browsing people's Dropbox. I wonder how fast I would fill a 4TB HDD.

I'm sure that GCHQ dudes are jerking it to pictures of you as we speak.

I voted for the guy twice, but I think I learned that the system is bigger than any man. To quote Bill Hicks, on the first day they take the new president into his theater and show him the Kennedy assassination from an angle that nobody has ever seen before and say 'any questions, Mr. President?' to which he replies 'Just what my agenda is going to be.'

Is there any way a presidential candidate could run on a platform of defanging the NSA? Isn't its funding and oversight controlled by Congress?

This is despicable. Despicable! To think there's some pencil neck desk jockey passing around the picks of me goatse-ing my poop shoot...

Despicable!

Well, they probably couldn't be a current congressman, at least any that actually voted it into what it is. Rand Paul might be able to, but he hasn't done anything beyond an occasional speech either.

Maybe a governor could, but I don't think it's really a huge issue for most of America, at least not an election issue. Too busy caring about non-existent gun control, alien drug gang members invading our homes, birth control and the imaginary budget crisis.

Sadly, not surprising. Or unexpected.

I also expect some non-governmental civilian employees of Facebook, and ANY cloud based storage company to basically be doing the same thing.

Yeah, this is utterly unsurprising.

You have to look at it from a higher perspective.

When it's that easy for everyone involved to get such data and even do with it as the individuals please, it also has to be easy to get confidential industrial information and sell it to the highest bidder.

EDIT: oh the update is nice

In an e-mail sent to Ars, NSA spokeswoman Vanee Vines wrote: "NSA is a professional foreign-intelligence organization with a highly trained workforce, including brave and dedicated men and women from our armed forces.

It doesn't look as if that's the truth, Vanee. I would be embarassed, if I had your job.

My mortal enemy from high school ended up pretty high up in the FBI last I heard; now nobody knows where he works. Potentially CIA.

I've always assumed for years he probably snooped on my email.

I don't believe it's so much a revelation as much as it is an editorial on why this shit sucks and how we can't let the govt get away with it.

Also, the NSA knows what pizza toppings you like!

imagine all the child porn they've intercepted from teens sexting.

somebody should charge them with possession of child porn.

Yeah when I went to visit the FBI base in a certain program we were told how some of their employees had to screen through hundreds of hours of child pornography for their investigations. Some can't handle it and quit.

He must not have a whole lot of stuff left to leak, cause this seems like bottom of the barrel stuff.

For the average Joe NSA employees passing around nude photos of his teenage daughter and his wife is way more important than NSA spying on that Merkel-thing, especially true for prude US.

That some people are able to do so, sure. That almost everyone is able to do that without any authorization is not. You could have guessed that, but now there is confirmation.

I'm working at a hospital and we have actual access control for stuff like that. For example when a patient has photos attached to his/her file, access is only possible from the ward, where the patient is currently located. As soon as the patient is moved, the ward loses all access over that data. Doctor accounts have access for all patients, but access will get logged for patients, who are currently not treated by their department and the doctor even has to enter a reason why he/she needs access. And this log gets checked.

Which means NSA is truly incompetent in that regard. Another point why they should get closed down.

Well, err, one easy way to avoid that is to not take naked pictures of yourself, or at the very least don't put them on a network connected device? It is a huge breach of privacy but it helps if you don't give them the ammo in the first place

this reminds me of a steven seagull movie.

when i was like 5 i remember watch it.

in the movie, they had satellite photography that could zoom in really close on anywhere in the world, so they zoomed in on a topless girl on the beach.

i remember this vividly, because of tits.
