so anyone up for some roguelike play?

I'm not on my own computer this week, but I'd love to participate when I return to it. I need to get back into Shiren and finish another one of those bonus dungeons...

Alright, back to my tales of Kamyran's Eye 2:

I made that scout, and then died at like level 16 or something lame. So I made a Paladin, just so I could try everything. I did a lot of good with this guy.

I defeated the Orcs, and killed their totem.

I even found a magic axe that randomly strength buffs me as I fight. So that was pretty rad.

Recovered ore for the one town, saved Arranes like 10 times, and got the Sultan's help.

My main goal was to kill the Obelisks. I made it all the way to one of them, but I didn't have any spells powerful enough to kill it (the guy recommended lightning bolt, but I didn't ever find it). I wanted to try to kill the obelisks before going after the wizards, but it didn't end up happening.

I made it to the fourth (?) floor of the wizard's tower. I think the wizard himself was there, but there were stairs to go higher, so it might have been his apprentice. Anyway, I'm getting kind of overwhelmed, so I go to retreat. On the third floor, with 4 or 5 dudes in hot pursuit, I get hit by a stun (confuse really) spell. Not good, but I was running EARLY as a precautionary measure, so I figure I'm ok... still have about 450 hp left, should be ok.

Except by the time stun wears off, 7 guys have me pinned in a corner, and I'm down to 150 health or so. So I make with the potions, and the drain spell, but I'm getting WORKED. For whatever reason (seriously, no clue), I could only target some subset of the guys with my drain spell, so I couldn't keep the dmg->hp conversion going at optimum efficiency. I similarly couldn't properly assess everyone to concentrate hits on the most wounded (with the confuse effect, I wasn't sure who I had hit before it wore off). I run out of drain casts (and recharges)... think to brew potions mid battle (nice thought, lol that it works), and get back up to about 200 hp.

Somewhere previous to this, I actually tried to use the crystal of return. Turns out it's blocked in this tower. If I had known that, I would have been much more prepared when I came in! Also somewhere in the above, I was at 7 hp for a click!

At this point they've configured themselves such that one dude is between me and the stairs down. I kill him with about 80 hp or so left, and break for the stairs. In one step, that 80 hp is gone, and my game ends.

GRRRRRRRRRR!

Torn on which race I'll try for my next go, but I think I'll do at least one more.

Score on that last on: 4379 btw. Apparently I was killed by an elemental (summoned by the wizard, it appeared)

Harrowing tale! Yeah, the Fairy Queen isn't kidding when she mentions that Crystal can lose in areas of strong magic interference---like say a Wizard's Tower. That was one awesome sounding axe though! I'm thinking you'll have to avoid that Wizard's tower until a bit later unless you luck out on finding some stuf---max level is 50 and there may be some optimal level up concentrations we've not reckoned yet.

Next time I get a chance to play, which might be awhile, I'm going to make a point of mapping out the overworld and making use of the warps and faster travel bits between places.

I played Triangle Wizard almost all night last night. I like it but holy crap is it kicking my ass. The whole class thing lead me to experiment with certain builds which is pretty fun to do. I'm also going to install Kam's eye 2. I'll give that a look. All in all though Rougelikes are THE shit.

Does anyone have any great rougelikes that are for sale? I thought maybe some wouldn't have been talked about cause the price or something.

Main problem you run into is that there are slim to none available to purchase...period. The sad fate(Most prolific and forgotten Roguelike series ever, there I said it!), and my subsequent insane task of years to come, of the Jaunt Trooper series damn near killed the retail Roguelike market. Many on the PC side also tend to have "issues" with wanting to pay for any Roguelike as a product, thusly several of that group moonlight as "jackasses".

Still, in terms of period:

http://www.shrapnelgames.com/Digital_Eel/WW/WW_page.html On sale for a few bucks off, any discount at all is hard to come by.

http://www.shrapnelgames.com/Chronic_Reality/SW/SW_page.html Not so expensive in the grand scheme dammit and I swear getting that unique RAGe Engine they've got going with it makes it potentially tremendous in value---I myself will endeavor to resurrect this game over the coming months/year(s)

http://www.lostinflatspace.com/ Each game decently priced, sequel feels like the way to go to me as I only recently discovered this existed---I'm holding out for it to show up in an Impulse Weekend Sale since Impulse actually carries the title(s).

http://www.jmp.fi/~smaarane/urw.html Various payment options/styles from cheap to not so cheap...I chose to get the Lifetime registration awhile back and...HOLY SHIT...looks like it has a rather substantial update incoming according to that new Developmental News subsection in the download section

Otherwise, there's just the console and handheld stuff that always comes up in the other topics...Shiren, Izuna, Pokemon Mysterious Dungeon, Torneko, etc.

^^Thanks for the links. Your a pretty awesome dude. Much thanks

Umm so I have a really dumb question. In Kam's eye 2 how do go down stairs/decend?

I've been roaming around floor 1 for about 30 minutes heh. I'm an idiot I know but seriously I only see a ladder which I can't go up cause its floor 1 and a blank hall that it won't let me go down.

No prob man, I'm GAF's unofficial Roguelike monstrosity---even moreso if Detective-GAF ever comes after me and makes discoveries.

For Kam eye 2 all you need to do is walk/click into them. It takes a little while to get used to the visual setup, and you can plainly see it is VERY different than the likes of Triangle Wizard.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CTj4NmFrtfQ You can see a rough gist of some of what can go down in this vid, the closest thing to a proper trailer that exists for it.

I'm sorry i'm an idiotx2 I didn't mean Kam 2 I meant POWDER. sorry

I can't figure it out.

I like Kam 2 btw, I'm building my library right now but I plan on playing Kam 2 and Tri wizard for the majority of the time

Ah, you just gotta search around the walls for secret doors....generally at the end of corridors or the middle-edges of rooms. Pass some turns around them in turn and a door should become visible.

Here's something special you can watch on POWDER when you feel like it, spoilers abound but still good stuff(though incomplete hopefully it resumes at some point):

An Update on my KE2 gaming:

I've got a scout leveled to 50 now. No magic items yet, but an amazon bow, knight helmet, and some sweet armor or other. I've developed his talents differently from other characters: Made his ranged both the primary and tertiary priority. For the first 15 levels or so, made magic secondary, then switched from magic to endurance. This means that I haven't backfired any spells at all, but have good HP. My range skill is through the roof, and I destroy almost anything relatively easily. More challenging opponents get "hold" cast on them, and then I arrow them. It's the only spell I've really used.

I'm about to kill off the orcs. I'm hoping I find a scroll for lightning or something else that can take out obelisks. I've hunted a few random caves, but come up empty so far. Found an obelisk, and none of my spells seemed to effect it (blast and drain disappointing me immensely here). If these things really weaken magic, I want to take them out before going after the necromancer, cult, or wizard tower.

Also, I've been granted fulgarite for a quest reward, and apparently I can absorb it, followed by other gems for a variety of effects. I'm too scared to use it, because I'm not sure how long it lasts (if temporary at all), though supposedly I can learn new secret spells this way. I'm thinking about running through a mine just to load up on gems, and then experimenting to see what happens. That'll probably be next move after the orcs.

Cool Platy...interesting that you managed to hit level 50 with so many questy jobs and enemies to fell. I figured that Fulgurite would show up in game somehow after you meet that one villager at the very beginning who asks what the deal with it is then aims to give it to a wizard chum.

In a way, it is doubly interesting on your levelling being so successful for now there will be the remaining situations to contend with not having any more growth avenues outside of rewards/drops/discoveries.

Keep at it! Must still be many a secret lurking...

hell yeah, just got my Shiren by then post today.

played it until i reached the town of Hamlet. pretty cool gameplay, i really like it, its like a very fast turn based RPG game. the levels up to the town were easy. hopefully it stays like that. I doubt it though.

and how the hell do you save? i just left the DS in Soft-quit mode, and i want to try my other games :(

Head's up on Kamyran's Eye 2 folks: There's been a couple more revision versions release in the past little while it seems, and even better, for Mac GAF, there's now a beta for a Mac version of the game---so get to it and fill them in on any issues and whatnot so you lot can have a fully functioning experience!

Success!

Really not sure when I ever practiced cannibalism? Enslaved Tongues are used in a pretty good potion, so maybe drinking that did it for me? Never found any magic bow, so I used an amazon bow right up to the end. Potions are essential, particularly escape, healing, regen, and protection. Didn't ever make it to defeat the wizard or kill the obelisks, and wanted to kill the black knight too, but didn't find him again once I leveled up enough to where I could take him.

Stuff that I still don't know:

- That fulgurite stuff. I absorbed it twice, with a bunch of gems after it, and never really saw any effect.
- I got ore from the boss of the orcs, but never found a way to do anything with it.
- I got a gem of necromancy from the necromancer, but was too chicken to try to absorb it.

EDIT: Hid pictures, as they are big and maybe spoilery.

Congrats Platy!!!

-I'd also reckon the cannibalism comes from an Enslaved Tongue. My guess as to how to avoid it and still get the potion would be getting one from a non-human source...like how the Cows can be enslaved I'd reckon some others animals and creatures can be as well and I'd reckon they'd be capable of dropping it.

Otherwise, I'd say keep tinkering and challenging it with other classes/other difficulty levels and if all else fails contact the dev company to gain clarity on lingering issues.
