So apparently I'm "too skinny".

Hey, dealifts and ohp's are fun and satisfying, but I like getting results and getting them efficiently. If OP's gf is complaining about his looks, do you think she's hoping for him to transform into Rippetoe or for him to get a wide back/chest and keep the low bf%? Pull-ups are hard as fuck for a reason. How many can you do?

:lol I'm not getting into that with you.

That's what I've heard from some people.

I've gone onto many sites looking for advice and none of them are as good as my good friend GAF. But anyways, carrying on. I want to put on some muscle I guess... Or just not be too skinny (but not fat either).

I'm currently doing swimming for school right now, if it helps.

tl;dr, how do I get out of "too skinny"?

Also, sorry if this is the wrong place to put this thread ._.

This may sound cliche but in all seriousness lift heavy things and eat more. Specifically squat heavy. I have seen this work many many times and I have personally done it. I was not too skinny, but I was on the thin side and heavy squats made a huge difference and will impact your entire body. I would say it took a total of 3-4 months. 5 at the most. Starting Strength + eat enough food.

That's skinny?

I'm 5'6" and 105 lbs. I guess that makes me "dangerously underweight"? Heh.

Yeah, I'm 5'11" and 130 lbs, and my arms are sadly rather girly. D:

I don't think people seem to understand there's a difference between being skinny and being lean. The latter is infinitely more preferable to the former.

I'm 26 and I've had the "Too Skinny" problem all my life. You just have to accept it. I've tried working out and eating ridiculous large quantities of food and nothing works. I'm not willing to be stupid unhealthy to achieve weight so I just gave up.

Now I just eat healthy and whatever I weight, I weight.

Yeah, I'm 5'11" and 130 lbs, and my arms are sadly rather girly. D:
Exact same.

Good problem to have.

No its not.

For some reason, people think really skinny people are lucky. But there is such a thing as too skinny. You end up not wanting to be anything other than fully clothed around other people because you feel like a pretzel. But I guess that's my fault for not working out.

Move to NYC, you'll fit in just fine.

I'm originally from Michigan and had comments about my weight throughout college (24, crohn's disease, 6'0, 145lbs). I work out, take whey, eat a bunch, etc, but don't gain weight or fat, absorb nutrients due to my condition. Haven't had one person comment since moving here.

I'm 5'11" and fairly small-framed. Was 130 lb. before I started lifting about two months ago. My weight has increased about ten pounds. I don't really look much larger, but I do look fuller. Not sure how to explain it. Anyway, you should seriously consider working out. I actually followed /fit/'s old sticky and found a pretty good program that's helped me considerably. Check it out. Farther down in the exercise section the guy links to a couple of exercise routines, but this is the one I've been doing. I've seen significant strength gains and I've definitely gained more definition, but I'm still pretty small. That's where eating more comes into play. If you're looking to bulk up, you gotta eat more. The lifting will help you burn off fat and gain muscle, though. You can try a gym membership or get some dumbbells (I got some Bowflex Selecttech 552s off of Craigslist for relatively cheap, but that might still be too much for you...just decide which you'd prefer), but be sure not to hurt yourself and know your limits. I've overexerted myself before and trust me, lifting injuries are NOT fun.

I know it's tough for us little guys, but if you stick with it you'll see the results. My goal is 150 lb. by year's end. Anyway, best of luck to ya, whatever you decide to do about it.

EDIT:
Gain weight slowly and naturally by adding a few more calories to your diet, more protein, and working out a lot.
This. Don't try to bulk up too fast. I say the exact vice versa to really heavy people trying to lose weight. Don't try to change your weight too quickly. Dem stretchmarks, bro.

EDITEDIT:
One last thought...you shouldn't be doing any of this because it'll make you more attractive. While that's certainly a nice side effect, your primary goal should be a healthier body and lifestyle.

GOMAD diet.

I did this for 5 weeks, while working out 3-4x a week. Exactly 1 gallon of whole milk per day + as many meals as I could fit (usually 1-2).
I gained 32 pounds.

Went to a doctor and my liver enzymes were like 20x their normal level, and cholesterol was up. I had "fatty liver", was told to lay off the fatty foods like whole milk.

School started again and I didn't have time to work out anymore. So after the doctor appointment I ceased the diet.

Lost about 15 lbs in about a week because it was water weight. lost about 8 more pounds naturally over 4 months. Got bloodwork done after that point and my enzyme levels were back to normal.

Now I've got the remaining 6 pounds or so just hanging on as fat. I kind of like it though because before then I was a skeleton. Now at least I have some insulation to my bones.

Don't do GOMAD, it's not really worth it.

The only benefit was that having that many carbs/protein/fat made it REALLY easy to see gains in my workout routine. I was increasing my weight and reps every time I hit the gym. I doubled my squatting weight in a month. I had never seen any progress like that before in my life.

But it's a terrible diet for your body and it mostly just gives you water weight and fat you don't need.

Gain weight slowly and naturally by adding a few more calories to your diet, more protein, and working out a lot.

It's probably the last time I follow an eyebrow-raising diet routine from the internet ever.

Person: "You're too skinny."

OP: "I'm a swimmer. The fuck do you do, fat ass?"

I don't see why that's not your go to response. Fuck the haters.

When you are skinny and weigh little you can't really talk shit to people because you can get destroyed in a matter of seconds.

No way man. You don't have to accept it. I was too skinny and did something about it around the age of 27-28 and put on 50+ lbs in less than 6 months. It's totally possible.

Thanks kittens <3. I just feel like I really should pack on some muscle or something... Right now Some parts of my body look like a famine hit :P I don't think I'm anorexic-tier though...

About eating more, I feel like I'd get fat and not have muscle show.

You won't feel that way if you start to lift.

I think they do, just not the results most are after. Even if they get them, it takes more time*effort per unit of payout than is efficient. All IMO, of course. The debate has more layers to it than you'd expect.

Well, as you are implying, it all depends on your goals. While I will do pullups because they are an effective and fantastic exercise, they are an accessory lift as there are other lifts that I choose to prioritize first.

You seem upset.

Very.

Yeah, it's unacceptable for a man to be skinny. He should feel ashamed of himself. Guys have an obligation to alter their bodies with extreme diets to reach an unnatural standard and be aesthetically tolerable to women.

Not really.

Most women are jealous of my slim build.

I'm skinnyfat, which sucks even more. I had a nice gym routine going at the beginning of the semester but now I'm super busy :(

Age - 22
5-11
158lbs
Around the shoulder - 40 inches
Arms - 15 inches
Waist - 30 inches

You probably have a similar body type to me OP. My build looks like 175-180lbs. I was 115lbs entering into my sophomore year in H.S. Over time I learned how to sculpt my body to these proportions. I've been lifting and researching nutrition and exercise for seven years though. Do some research of your own. Follow a workout routine from Men's Fitness magazine for six months and log your results thoroughly.

140 lbs 5'11 is fine health wise, but I can understand why OP would want to gain weight for aesthetic purposes. Im the same height and at 150 and still look like a stick figure

I'm probably considered "too skinny" as well, so I started P90X. Now I'm skinny, but with more muscle tone :) 5'11", 160 lbs, btw.

Fake edit: Never heard of this "GOMAD" thing before. *Googles*

A friggin GALLON of milk a day?

Right there with you

5ft7 for 130 lbs, I apparently have a normal BMI, but I am skinny.

I did succeed to go up to 134 lbs after 3 month of diet, eating eggs, milk, yogurt, nuts and whatever could make me fat and going to the gym.

But I lost them pretty fast when I stopped (I moved).

Now I've stopped smoking and I hope it will help me get fatter. I'll be starting a new diet soon too, maybe I'll throw some protein in it.

Buy some whey (fast) or casein (slow) protein powder and drink like a 25 gram scoop with 1 cup of milk twice a day in addition to your regular meals. Eat nuts, anything with good fats and protein. Work out so your body has something to do with the protein you're consuming.

Also, don't worry too much about packing on chub. You'll be able to work that off in no time. You just don't want to starve yourself while you're doing a workout program because your body will start burning muscle as fuel, stopping you dead in your tracks.

i was 5'9" 135 all through high school, then i took weights my 2nd semester of senior year and gained 40 pounds. i was also working at taco bell and eating food there just about every day, so i was pretty fat. now , 3 years later at age 21 i'm 6' 190. i'm good with that weight.

just start hitting them gym, consistently, and eat a lot on days you lift.

I have a BMI of 16, I'm 6 feet tall and weigh 55kg. I did go to the gym for a while and got up to 59, but then gave up because I got lazy lol. It's weird because I actually eat a normal amount of food, I don't starve myself. Oh well, I don't mind being skinny that much anyway, it's too much time, effort and money to gain weight.

Don't do no stupid GOMAD diet

Just get your calories from good whole food. Just make sure you don't do that stupid milk shit.

Meat/fish and carbs. That's all

Count your calories and you'll probably be surprised with how low it is.

Don't have any pics ATM. Might post some later.

GOMAD seems like it would just get me wicked fat...

5'11'', about 140 lbs.
You're not too skinny by any stretch of mind. For the same height, I have had a BMI of 18 for forever and nobody said I was skinny. Try some different make-up if you think you're alright and others don't. Add some volume in your hair if you don't mind and always try to be cheerful when you eat with your family and friends.

people that call me too skinny are usually overweight.

woah. I'm 6'4 85k and people call me skinny. You sure you're still alive?
You must actually appear quite well-built with such height and mass. Most successful olympic swimmers share common attributes with you.

edit: This man has the same stats as you.

Googled skinny fat, that looks pretty weird.

I'm just skinny and have been like that since elementary school. Maybe it's because I used to do a lot of swimming and soccer, not really 'bulk up' sports.

My calorie intake is probably on the low side because what the fuck, how do people manage to eat so much.

Do you even lift, bro?

But seriously, I hear deadlifts and squats are the key to success. You also need to eat a lot of the right stuff for them to be effective.

That's why I always find it funny when people say I'm too skinny and need to eat more.
You might live in fatsville. Are people around you fat?
