So apparently the wifi is terrible on the PS4?

not in my experience, and you need to have everything on the same circuit (and in a modern home that's not all that likely).

Disagree. I have two friends with and I'm certain they don't begin and end on the same breakers , and they both rave about them.

Granted, there can be wiring oddities in any house that can't be expected, but based on IRL feedback, they work well.

And for anyone saying "should've used 5ghz", that wouldn't help in a typical home setup, and would likely hurt it as it doest travel through obstacles as well.

Probably a powerline adapter is your best bet OP.

Surely these devices just cause a whole load of interference due to it using the power lines....dropped packets and what not???

Depends on the house. Sometimes it works flawlessly, but other times Gaffers have reported it not working at all.

My PS4, Vita and Z1 Compact all have terrible wifi. It's really frustrating.. The PS4 is fine because I have it wired (and would anyway) but i'm sol with the other two.

PSN is shit, regardless of your connection.

Download speed are always borked, no matter what.

Other services work just fine; Steam, Origin, Uplay, Xbox Live, GoG. The only service that doesn't use my full bandwidth (250 mbps) is PSN.

Go figure.

Still, wired is the way to go.

It depends on how old/bad (or new/good) is the wiring and the whole system. In best case scenarios it performs like a wired network.

Instead of using a power line adapter you could setup a Wi-Fi bridge then plug that into the ps4. Still going to have latency but you could use 5ghz ac that way.

PSN's real shitty. It'll go on like week long spurts of not working for me, in one of those right now and it's annoying as hell.

The adapter is pretty bad, I just use a Wireless AC network adapter on my pc and share the connection to my PS4 using an Ethernet.

Sadly, shitty PSN download speeds don't make it as good as it should be.

You could always walk to Sony in Japan. Bring a USB flash drive, ask for your chosen piece of software/patch and then walk home again.

Might be quicker.

My PC and XB1 are on one circuit and the plug the reuter is connected to another, I have no issues. Same as my parents home (yes they have an console too :D ).

Been using them for years on PC, X360 and now XB1 and notice no difference between using the plug and connecting directly to the reuter.

Also using different plugs from different manufacturers, again not an issue. I would recommend these powerline plugs to anyone.

Powerline adapters definitely fixed things for me, but I had an atrocious wifi situation. There are five walls between my router in me, and despite it being a hell of a router, it can't perform miracles. My speeds are maybe ten percent slower on powerline, but I can't argue with the near perfect stability. I'd take that over that boost of speed any day.

Currently only my PC and fat 360 (no internal wifi) are hooked up wired, but my adapter doubles as a wifi extender that my other systems latch on to. Its worked extremely well so far with a full strength signal. Once I free up a power outlet I'm going to grab an ethernet switch to get everything wired up.

The adapters definitely aren't the fix for everybody, but depending on your personal situation it may be worth trying them out.

For reference, this is what I use.

So you get the same speed from the plug as you do from the actual router?

Not exactly the best test but I just did a quick a dirty run on speedtest.net using my laptop and when connected directly to the router in the living room the download speed was 26.77 Mbps. Connected via the powerline plug upstairs in the converted loft space (which is a separate circuit, we actually have 2 powerline plugs up there each with 2 connections) the speed was 25.92 Mbps so there was a slight drop. Going back downstairs and connecting via wifi in the living room the speed dropped to 24.60 Mbps.

I would run the networking test on the XB1 (in the loft connect via powerline) to see what the packet loss is but it's being used ATM. Hope the rest helps though.

It was actually my dad that told me about them, didnt think they would work at all but now we have 3 (4?) at home and they all work great. Well I had to replace the first one as it just died but that was a good few years ago iirc.
Powerline adapters are trash. Read the tests yourself, not whatever people that bought into it are trying to tell you.
EDIT: Scrap all that I must have faked those tests because 'I bought into it', lol!

I am curious to read some tests if you can point them out to me however, I just looked for powerline review and picked the best for my budget.

I use 2 Devolo 200 Mini's and heres the speed I get on wired powerline:

Versus wireless about 8m away in the next room:

Practically the same...
I use the wired on PS4 but don't get any where near those speeds.

My PS4 is wired, and downloads full games in about 20-30 minutes. Slower than my PC, but certainly acceptable for something the size of The Witcher 3.

My girlfriend's PS4 is in the other room, and it won't even connect to the wifi. Everything else in the room will, including the PS3, no problem, but the PS4 refuses. She has to take it into the living room to update stuff. It's ridiculous.

I can't even get a signal anymore. My PS4 is still in the same spot it has been since I got it. The only way I can get internet is by ethernet and even then I still don't get the full speed. I get 54 Mb/s on my PC through ethernet and on PS4 it's usually 40-42 Mb/s.

To me, wired or wireless didn't really make much difference. Even the xbox one suffers from terrible download speeds.

Powerline works well for me though, and its what I use on my ps4 when I need to do remote streaming to my vita. Outside of that, wireless performs more or the less the same as wired

I have it wired so it's not a big deal for me, but I remember reading around launch that the chip they have for WiFi is garbage. So if wired is not an option in your house, I guess you're SOL.

I'm going to have to experiment with PowerLine adapters, luckily a friend has a couple and the wiring in this house is pretty good since an electrician lived here before.

If you spent good money on Internet, then it's wired connection or nothing. just the unfortunate truth.
One of my friends always insists on playing wireless talking endlessly about his connection and I've tried to tell him repeatedly I can literally tell within 10 minutes if he's wired or not in online games.

Did Sony cheap out on the parts for wifi?

Yes.

No 5g, and a shitty chipset/antenna for 2.4g.

OP, you do also have the option of running a second router in bridge mode and using the wired connection on your ps4. It's easy to do, better than using the PS4's wifi, but expensive as you'll have to buy a second router.

Wired is the way to go.

even on a wired connection PSNs performance is awful. download speeds are so insanely slow. I get my full 120+mb/s on steam, lucky to see 10% of that on PSN.

would be nice if sony put some of that pay to play online money to use actually upgrading their infrastructure.

This would be a great upgrade for the inevitable slim ps4.

It's not just the hardware that's bad, it's their network. There really is no excuse for it being this bad with free services like Origin and Steam offering better speeds. Better refund policies on games, too.

The lack of 5GHZ this day and age is very sad to see, especially when it's a console I am stuck with for five or so more years.

IIRC the Xbox One has 5GHZ, and I love it for that.

I'm with Sky Fibre (50/10) but connected wirelessly on PS4, I would get 2/300Kbps. I then changed to wired (which involved a LOT of lifting up carpets and securing the LAN cable to the underlay) and now I get 35/8. The wireless on the PS4 is shit. Wired is the way forward.

Happy powerline adapter user for over 5 years here! My current speed over the network is 125 mbps.

Here's the point: there are lots of variables mostly based on the wiring in your house. Try it but make sure they are fully refundable.
