So how did Harrison Ford not get typecast when Mark Hamill did?

It's a shame because in terms of Return of the Jedi, Ford gave one of the laziest performances (I don't care if Han wasn't as well written as in Empire, he phoned it in) and Hamill gave a deceptively strong performance that held the whole thing together.
Good god, Ford was AWFUL in ROTJ (still think he's a much better actor when he wants to tho).

Ford isn't a good actor. He's average at best.

Post like these are hilarious. You can say he's not a great actor, but anyone with his charisma , his ability to carry the fuck out of many different films, and yes even his range when he really wants to switch it up(Mosquito Coast) is far from average. You don't become iconic as fuck many times over because you're "average, AT BEST lol".

Also, The Fugitive is a great movie.

Pretty much everybody was phoning it in Jedi. The cast, the director, the writers, nobody seemed to care.

But Hamill...arguably I think his performance in Jedi is better than Empire. His scenes alone with Yoda and Vadar had real chops, especially since he was effectively acting next to a puppet and a six foot man in a suit with a non James Earl Jones voice. Ford and Fisher at least did all their scenes with puppets / robots together for the most part. Mark also did the dashing hero scenes on the Barge very well.

I think the plot concerning Death Star mark II was bobbins but the actual writing wasn't too bad, especially in the Throne room scenes. Fisher and Ford didn't care certainly as co-leads and the Direction does seem muddled but Hamill acquitted himself very well and as I said, it's a shame he didn't get as much reward or chance as Ford.

Worked for Adam Sandler well enough.

People often look back on that Adam Sandler time in their lives and think, "Just what the hell were we thinking?". I can personally still get down with Billy and Happy but with great reservations, and the awareness of 'guilty pleasures'. I would also have to come across them channel surfing.

You're not getting that kind of reaction with Harrison Ford, and his best/biggest roles.

To be fair, Hamill's voice acting career is pretty impressive.

Wow I would of never guessed he was Skips

Harrison Ford has phoned in the same "where's my daughter/firewall" performance since the '90s. He typecast himself.

I realized a long time ago that Ford actually is kind of a shitty actor and somehow found a way to trick us all that he isn't.

he's one of those actors who can do one thing better than pretty much anyone, but is not very good outside that box.

This talk about Hamill being ugly is really weird. He is a normal looking man, that was not his problem.

Indiana Jones is the reason Ford got more success pretty much. That movie made him. He is also more charismatic than Hamill which helps.

Honestly, most big name actors seem to get typecasted into specific kind of roles you expect to see them portray. It's closer to a rule rather than the exception we seem to treat the term as, to the point where we express genuine surprise at the few big actors who do get to show a good deal of range like Gary Oldman.

Harrison Ford's filmography is simply stupendous. I struggle to think of another actor who has been so lucky to have starred in so many iconic roles.

This isn't really typecasting, though.

Typecasting is what happens when an actor isn't given the chance to take the roles they want to take because directors/producers/casting agencies won't give them the opportunity to do anything else BUT that. That's typecasting.

Big name actors get to do what they want in most cases. If they choose to stay within a specific wheelhouse, that's on them, because they have enough draw, power, money, influence, etc. to do the roles they'd prefer to do. They're the ones choosing, not the studios.

Harrison Ford wasn't typecast. He made a bunch of lazy choices after his second go-round as a giant star in the 90s, but those were his choices. When he wants to do something different, he gets to do it.

When Mark Hamill wanted to do something besides "Be Luke Skywalker" he didn't get that chance. He ended up doing a bunch of low-budget sci-fi, TV work, and voice-acting, before voice-acting became the career path it currently is.

yeah mark hasn't really aged that well compared to ford...then again he didn't need to keep up appearances as he was no longer making films.

but he still looked pretty good in Wing Commander 3-4 to me. all the girls on that ship were thirsting for him. :)
