So how is Mercenaries BC?

Just curious I was thinking of buying it for the XBox and playing it on the 360. I've heard the backward compatibility is kind of flakey. Would I be better off with the PS2 version. (Which would be odd since I'll probably buy a PS3 fairly soon to get decent BC)

I don't have the Xbox version, but I can tell you about the PS2. Runs fine on the PS3 as you'd expect, but the game doesn't have a widescreen mode so upscaling will skew the aspect ratio a bit if you want full screen on a hdtv. It's not bad at all though, although the smoothing option doesn't really help the image much IMO. I generally prefer my PS2 games to be all jaggied over the smeary pixel smoothing of the PS3 bc.

The game does seem to control a bit off though, I don't know if it's just me but playing Mercenaries again on PS3 had me struggling to aim a bit when moving horizontally, I think it just might be a result of playing a 4:3 game stretched to 16:9 and being very used to playing it before on PS2. Very playable though, no issues at all once I got used to the slightly odd horizontal aim movement.

Terrible on the 360.

It crashes ever so often & prepare for a slide show when the action really picks up & that's if it doesn't crash on you.

PS3 via hardware BC or software's?

We need to start pointing this out, there should be no reason for a game to not have good BC on PS3 via hardware.

Really? Damn it, I didn't agree to the trade yet but I'm supposed to trade Shenmue II for this, and I'll be playing it BC on 360 :(

Can I get confirmation that it's really that bad?

That's funny, because I just picked up a used copy for 5 bucks yesterday. I haven't played it extensively, but have had no problems after 2 hours of straight gameplay.

Xbox version on 360 right?

It was a complete mess when they released the BC update with it. They just did another BC update a couple of weeks ago that may have fixed it. I haven't had a chance to test it yet.

Weird, I just checked Microsoft backward compatibility list and they don't list it as being updated or anything. So is there much of a difference between the two versions? I mean if the BC on 360 is that bad I'd probably be better off with the PS2 version. (Even when I upgrade to the PS3 I should still be good.)

Started playing this last night on the 360. First time playing it and I was impressed with the graphics and voice acting. Looks great and I was impressed with the widescreen support.

It locked up on me after about 30-45 minutes though. It was quite fun though so I'll stick with it and just save often.

It ran decently on 360 for the first few hours(looks really great with the upscaling actually).

Once I hit the Chinese territory and missions though, it all imploded. I can't get a couple minutes of solid playtime before crashing occurs. It's consistent, irritating, and a real problem.

I dunno if it has been smoothed out in the past month(doubtful), but I'd probably go PS2 if you must. Or just wait a few months and get the sequel.

I had EXACTLY the same experience. The first Chinese mission crashes me at the same point, every time. Hard lock. Haven't tried to play the game since.

Play it on the PS2 or original Xbox.

Played fine for an hour, then crashed. Now, it crashes after about every 5 minutes.

This is on the 360 with the latest BC update for it.
