So I got a Gamecube controller for my Wii, now what?

My Gamecube controller came in from Nintendo today, so I plugged it in and played some Brawl with a roommate and some other guys who live on our hall. If I want to play Gamecube games now with my new controller, do I also need a Gamecube memory card, or am I already good to go? Also, would you recommend catching up on Gamecube games I missed before or after getting new Wii games that are coming out?

You might be able to get a lot of Gamecube games for cheap online so, I guess you could start with those first.

You need a memory card.

Get as many great GameCube games while you can. Most of them are still cheap and can be found at GameStops.

All the cases I've read about said it was just 3rd party memory cards and the official 1019 one.

Mine is 251 and my saves are fine.

My Wii corrupted my memory card 3 times.

Then again, it was a third party one, so it probably would have gotten corrupted if I simply had it in the same room as a ham sandwich.

That's a relief, I have a 251 as well and I've been really wary about playing GC games on my Wii since I heard some of the horror stories.

I recommend you get

Fire Emblem: Path of Radiance
F-Zero GX
Eternal Darkness
Baten Kaitos: Origins
REmake (the Wii version is cropped for widescreen, isn't it?)
Ikaruga

All are games I chose to keep upon selling my Gamecube.
The very best games of the system (sans the ones
with superior Wii ports).

Now you play Billy Hatcher and Skies of Arcadia Legends, the best games on the Gamecube ever. And if anyone disagrees, that means they support Hitler 2012 in the Revival Chronicle Elections Super Turbo + @lpha.

There's your answer.

About that....I don't know how to say it.... but....

Also lies. I use my Wii as my GameCube for the most part (unless I'm playing a JP game that corrupts via Gecko like Paper Mario 2 JP, where I dig out my modded Cube), and I only use two 1019 cards.

Smash Brothers might possibly be one of the best party games ever.

N64 version is my personal fav, but the gamecube one has some really great gameplay as well.

Memory card corruption is only a 'rare' problem with third party cards. (lost my Smash Bros save twice because of one ....) with an official, everything should be just fine.

Well, there are known issues with the official 1019 memory card. Not saying they are related but from some complaints I've read, others said they have different kinds of problems on the Wii.

I use one official 251 and a Madcatz 1019 memory card. Both have been reliable on the Wii so far.
The Madcatz one forgets I have saves on it sometimes when used on the Gamecube, though.

F-Zero GX (best arcade racer I've ever experienced)
Wind Waker
Pikmin 2 (I never played the original but I've heard this one is better)

(if you haven't tried them on other consoles)
Metroid Prime 1 + 2
Viewtiful Joe (IMO the original was the best)
RE4 (although the Wii version is the superior version)
Ultimate Spider-man
Spider-man 2 (not sure how good it's aged but it's the best Spider-man open world game)

Get Windwaker.

You can get Metroid Prime in the trilogy for the Wii, although that may be somewhat difficult, given it's out of print now.

I was referring specifically to Red Steel 2 and Monster Hunter 3.

I think I'll be fine with just Brawl for now...

Already have it. Stopped playing in the middle of MP2 because I got Wario Land: Shake It! to distract me from it.

A few more games that no one else has recommended yet:

Timesplitters 2
Timesplitters 3
Luigi's Mansion (not the greatest game in the world, but I enjoyed it)
DK: Jungle Beat
Paper Mario 2
Mario Kart Double Dash

I can attest to having a Memory card 1059 corrupted. Maybe it's the Wii and maybe it's not, but it worked great until I used it in my upright Wii (some think that standing the Wii upright, especially with Wiiconnect24 makes the card too hot). When it corrupted, I lost hundreds of hours of gameplay and tons of awesome Timesplitters Future Perfect maps I made. I was really into that, and I lost it all. :(

Fun fact: Most games are effectively "out of print" shortly after release. All you folks constantly parroting "Metroid Prime Trilogy is out of print!" as though it's some wild and crazy occurence are only serving to inflate the price needlessly. Cut it out.

Rogue Leader
Super Monkey Ball 2 (I only actually played the first one but I've heard that this is basically the same but with more stuff)
Paper Mario: TTYD
F-Zero GX

If you have the Wii version of RE:4 you can use the GC controller with it, plus you get the extra content.

Kururin Squash, Mr Driller Drill Land, CHIBI MOTHERFUCKING ROBO!!, Mega Man Network Transmission, Star Fox Adventures on top of the games already mentioned.... so many great games for Gamecube!

Baten Kaitos
Chibi Robo
Donkey Kong Jungle Beat (great game, requires the Bongo controller but that can be found for cheap)
Fire Emblem
F-Zero GX
Killer7
Metroid Prime
Paper Mario: The Thousand Year Door
Pikmin 2
Sonic Mega/Gems Collection
Super Mario Sunshine
Super Monkey Ball
Super Smash Bros. Melee (pretty different from Brawl)
Tales of Symphonia
Viewtiful Joe
Wave Race: Blue Storm
Wario World
Zelda: Wind Waker

Some of these games have Wii versions, but other than Metroid and maybe Pikmin, they're all better on GC.

My third party card didn't get corrupted, but it causes my Wii to shut off randomly after only a few minutes of playing. I have a third party controller that does this too, but it's a shitty controller so no big deal. The Wii just has an issue with third parties :P

Sorry, I heard it on th Co-op 2009 review, they made it seem as though it wasn't a common occurrence.

I only got one controller for now... how's the single player?
Custom Robo single player is an RPG. The flow is simple but you're forced to play through it to get better parts for your Robo. Thankfully it's short and even if you don't have access to multiplayer, the game has tournament modes and CPU matches as well so it won't leave you with nothing to do.

Gotcha Force's single player is streamlined and just has you select points on a map to start battles. It has a story, but it's not involving so you don't have to waste your time with it. That's the jist of its single player really.

Now you may begin a letter writing campaign complaining to all publishers, including Nintendo for not adequatly supporting the GC controller.

There is no reason new super mario bros should not support the GC controller.

Why would you want to play NSMB with an analogue stick/the shitty GC D-Pad? I don't see what is wrong with the Wii Remote for that game.

I would assume he wants it for multiplayer.

Isn't the classic pro coming out in a few weeks with Monster Hunter? I've heard the d-pad is fantastic on that thing, does NSMB Wii support it?

NSMB has stages and powerups that require motion input; The classic controller does not have a motion sensor.

So.

I don't know about the Wii, but my official 1019 stopped working for my GameCube a long time ago. Thankfully, I had a lot of the saves backed up on a third-party memory card ( :lol ), so it wasn't a total loss. :( Now I just have multiple 251s. Even picked up a couple extra early in the Wii's lifespan just to be prepared. :)

By the way, get Fire Emblem:Path of Radiance for GameCube and Fire Emblem: Radiant Dawn for Wii. Both work with the GameCube controller. :D
