Nope.

"We"... lol.

Put water in kettle, put kettle on stove, listen for whistle.

Microwaves? C'mon man.

Obviously I was talking in generalizations and not everyone. I should have been more specific. Typically though, in most homes, kettles aren't widely used anymore unless you're a tea purist.

Still blows my mind that majority of the U.S uses a microwave for boiling water, it's just one of those odd major cultural differences. Every household in Europe has a kettle pretty much no matter how poor or rich you are, it's just one of those things that exist. Plus you can't yell at your bae to put the kettle on for some tea if you use a microwave - you're missing that social/relationship dynamic!

You should get a fast boiling kettle, there are some that will boil a full kettle of water in a minute.

Put water in beaker, put beaker in microwave, listen for alarm. Not much different and saves you a household appliance.

This. I haven't seen a kettle in a home in years. 20 years ago I'd still see them, but these days, I can't remember the last time I saw one.

I can tell u most asian americans grow up with an electric kettle or even fancier systems.

We use our lil Hamiltom beach for drip coffee and warming up water for the babies bottle. Convenient as hell.

It would be a sad day indeed the day I didn't have me kettle.

I feel bad for you non tea drinkers.

We typically (not everyone) like convenience and the ability to have one less piece of hardware in the kitchen. Like I mentioned before, 20 years ago, I would see kettles all the time. Today, I can't remember the last time I saw one in a household.

Also, I wouldn't necessarily say that microwave versus kettle is a major cultural difference. lol :P

I just turn the knob on my tub to hot water if I need it to be hot.

Yeah I don't get why it's so odd to people that we microwave water or just turn the faucet to hot. Some of these posts are like they're from the old world. I'm waiting to see a post saying it's weird that we use showers instead of a wash basin and rag. lol :P

Again, we don't really use kettles anymore here in the US. We either microwave our water for tea or use Keurigs or coffee makers for our coffee. No point to kettles.

You must have huge microwaves to boil multiple cups of water in them, then again I guess they'd be American sized microwaves.

It has already been confirmed as the truth.

For sandwiches specifically.

We don't really drink tea communally like that. We're not that type of culture honestly. A lot of people just don't like hot tea like that.

It has to do with America being a melting pot--no pun attended. You're bringing together so many culture together like this, not all of them are gonna have a love of tea or tea culture.

Electric kettle is a godsend have been using it for years. Easy way to cook water for tea or to put it in a pan to boil water but it's ten times faster than usual.

This is my current reality. I fill water up in my bucket and pour boiling water in it to make it clean and enjoyable. I miss running water. Haha

Yeah, right?! It's like you're using a normal kettle but it's boiling at the speed of light.

The first time I used it I though it was witchcraft.

For boiling hot water. Blanching, hot chocolate, cooking etc.

Yeah fast and efficient saves half the time on what you normally do. Using electric kettle at home and at work is very common here in europe. Also dirt cheap my kettle was ehm i think 15 euro's been using it for 3 years now and i clean it once in a while because of the chalk thank god for the filter that's in there but it needs to be done though.

Not sure if serious...i can say the difference between a normal kettle and electric is very different using gas to heat water takes minutes and electric kettle takes for 500ml water just 30 seconds.

I'm being serious. Just agreeing on how useful and better the electric kettle is. :D

You've never wanted to fill the sink quickly to wash your face/hair?

Or have a quick body wash?

Far more efficient time and electric wise than waiting for the boiler.
Oh, I was thinking on taking a full bath not just washing your face. Still, it's quite hot.

Also you can tell exactly who's an America or European just by the responses in here, fascinating to see the cultural differences.

While it's not fun, it's energy efficient and water efficient using a small basin with a small amount of boiling water and a rag to clean oneself.

I once had to fill my bath by kettle when my boiler broke. I can confirm that it took forever, and even after about 20 full kettles of water the bath still looked practically empty.

Yeah, I had to boil my clothes once due to bedbugs, I had to use my kettle to fill up a laundry bucket. I had to boil water like 20 times to get enough, along with using a fire pit to get additional hot water.

While those basic electric kettles are no better than stovetop ones for boiling water, the deluxe models with water filter, heat settings, keep warm function and thermal insulated pourer are really good. Especially if they're a 2500+ watt version.

I really need to get me one of those for my yerba mate.

I don't wash with the scalding water, haha. Obviously you mix in with cold to get to the acceptable temperature level.

The type of boiler in my flat requires roughly an hour's worth of heating time before it's acceptable to use, and it drains electric like mad. Without that turned on and prepped, you don't get hot water from the tap.

So washing the dishes, washing in the sink, etc. requires an electric kettle.

Don't put us all in that same category though.

European here, i turn on the hot faucet, it's hot in under 10 seconds. I get that a kettle is convenient, but to me it just sounds like your house setup kind of sucks

Wow, that sucks. Mine heats up in an instant.

Hate to break it to you, but they don't butter their bread either.

Of course we butter our bread, bagels and dinner rolls and stuff like that.
Lies. I've been in the sandwich threads before.

You never butter bread when making a sandwich.

What? Butter bread when making a sandwich? No we don't do that, except for grilled cheese.

What? How small are European microwaves that they can't fit multiple cups of water?

They're also great to get hot water for bathing. The usage of a kettle is truly numerous.

That's a serious use for electric kettles?

I'm getting culture shock from this thread.

I had one but it broke. The only reason I got one was because it was faster than my gas stove and I didn't have a microwave. It broke but I have a microwave so even though I still want one I'm not planning on getting one because the microwave works fine for me.

I'm in the US and I grew up always using a normal stove kettle for things like tea and oatmeal. All these people saying "hot water via the microwave" are nuts. Even I know that's not right.

When my Mom moved to New Zealand, she said she was taken aback by electric kettle use being so common. I too heard it's mostly because of the high voltage outlets that make electric kettles so common abroad. I was so inspired I recently got an electric kettle myself because:

-I have a small house and having morning tea would mean waking up anyone else with a stove kettle.
-I can be off doing other things instead of dropping everything I'm doing to go turn off the stove kettle.
