So I grew out of Nintendo age

...maybe not really a surprise as I turned 40 last year.

Sold my PS3 lately to get a Wii and play some of the classics I love (SMG, MP:C etc.) plus RE4 and UC.

I must say Nintendo is still the king of game design, both SMG and MP:C are excellent IMO. I often just sit there and think 'what a great idea, excellent design'. And I often sat there playing R&C:TOD and thought they really have to learn from Nintendo.

But then I find myself having as much fun playing R&C as I have with SMG. The presentation is so much better, it just is fun to watch at times while in SMG it is just the same od 'Meh' (not the graphics, they are great). And MP:C I find rather wearisome to play despite all the fantastic design.

Playing Excite truck is fun, but it doesnt even compare to the thrill playing Motorstorm. Now I find myself playing mostly the REs which are good and fun and in the case of RE4 still more excellent than most other stuff.

Getting my new PS3 today and was thinking if I keep the Wii anyway. But then I got Mario Kart. It gives me nothing. The single play bores me fast and in multiplayer I dont really see any advantage over double dash. It even seems to look worse (probably doesnt).

Actually the last time I really felt hyped for a 'kart' racing game was the trailer of Donkey Kong Racing as it felt fresh. But playing the 4th console incarnation of the same game with not even improved graphics this time was too much.

Not even Zelda gave me much, after the excellent style of Wind Waker the series really felt kiddy for me for the first time. So I realized I dont really feel like playing Nintendo stuff any more. Farewell Nintendo, it was a great time, but you lost me. No bad feelings and I know Nintendo does fine without me.

If you feel like contributing anything, please keep it civil, this is neither anti Nintendo nor pro Sony, just my feelings (and probably pointless anyway).

I've honestly felt compelled to sell my Wii lately; I think it's a pretty incredible system and I've had great times on it, but compared to Sony and Microsoft it just doesn't feel like Nintendo is putting that many great games on it. Thing is, when they do, they're GOTY material IMO (TP, Galaxy, etc). Problem is, I'm not big on Smash and Mario Kart doesn't really seem to be a game I'm dying to play. I dunno.

What keeps me from selling it though is that because I know the second I do, there'll be some amazing announcements for the Wii, likely announcements coming this summer at the game shows, and if not, most likely in the fall. Plus they're kinda hard to find. These two facts are the only reasons I haven't sold it yet.

yah, maybe, no problem to get one again then...I probably get one for my wife when Pikmin 3 is around
 
Same happened to me pretty much. I'm 33, grew up with Mario and the gang. I'm just tired of them now. I'm just too old for it. I'm glad the kids and others can still appreciate it. I need games with a bit more meat these days. Oh well, it's cool to look back on those days. Take a look at nesguide.com
 
The same has happened to me. But I don't know if it's specifically Nintendo... it has happened under many circumstances, just more with Nintendo because they had all their franchise releases around a year. I played zelda tp, mario galaxy, and smash bros. All 3 for me... just... I dunno. I absolutely loved Mario 64 and Ocarina of Time. They had some uber awesome magic juice or something to them. Was it because they were fresh and new? Perhaps. But the 3 wii games did absolutely nothing for me. And it's not like I can even really point out horrible problems with the games. RE4 on Wii was freaking amazing though. I hadn't played it on ps2 or cube.

Recently I guess it also happened with Lost Odyssey. Usually I love traditional rpgs... but LO just didn't cut it for me.

Why don't you just buy both? You will realize that the PS3 is not much better once you own one. I rarely play my PS3 these days, but there were times that I rarely played the Wii as well.
 
The only things I will say to this is that I played through R&CF straight in two sittings, but when I play Galaxy, even though I recognize the awesomeness of its design everywhere I look, I just dabble in it for a couple of hours and turn it off. I haven't even finished it yet, even though I've had it for three weeks or so.

I would not sell my Wii however. There are still a lot of things I want to play on it.
(Fire Emblem series, whatever Retro does next, and I'm hungry for a new Pikmin game)

Try different Nintendo games? BWii and Fire Emblem, perhaps.

I dunno, just seems silly to write off an entire publisher because you didn't like a few of their recent games. Nintendo's more than Mario, Metroid, and Zelda.
 
lol, I'm 33 and had the opposite experience.

when I was younger Mario and C. seemed to me too stupid and childish, I wanted more mature games, 'cause I needed to be "big".

now that I'm older I realize to prefer this kind of games instead of "serious stuff", because I need to be "little"

probably something is wrong with me

I grew up with the NES/SNES. I bought a N64 when it first came out. I had no interest in GC and have little enthusiasm for Wii. I didn't leave Nintendo, Nintendo left me.
 
I felt the same in Gamecube era. After the SNES and N64 (both were awesome imo) the Gamecube gave me nothing. The only series i still had interest for was Zelda and i loved Wind Waker. But Twilight Princess wasn't very good imo, so even the last Nintendo franchise is dead to me now. After the Gamecube i thought it only can get better, but Wii proved me wrong. I know many people have fun with Wii and it's games. But for me theres nothing out there or even announced that i want to play. Maybe sometime in the future, but for now it looks that i'll stay PS3 only.

Judging by your icon (as well as the guy you quoted), I'd say your tastes just followed a different path from what Nintendo wanted to do. Nintendo has continued making games that, for the most part, maintain the same ideals as they've always had.

It is simply because I dont have the time to play both. and I sold my 60GB PS3 at a good price because I am just not interested in BC
 
people's perceptions rarely equal reality. GAF is a prime example of this principle at work.

not to say people's enjoyment of certain games over other games is wrong, but there is a shortage of people enjoying games for what they are and not what they "could have been," or the even worse "what I wanted it to be"

Nope. That's exactly normal. When people are 14-15, they want the "M rated kill everything with blood splattering and boobies everywhere" type game, then most people grow out of that and long for the type of game that reminds them of why they play games in the first place.

Good for you. Only 2-3 more years until the next generation of systems. Until then, you'll have to deal with the current generation.
 
I personally fell the wii will get the games people want a year or two from now, until then its going to be crap and some nice games here and there. Having all 3 consoles is the better combination.
 
Investing in every system will ensure that you will be able to play all the greatest games regardless of platform, and you'll always have choice. <3

and yes, Nintendo make every new console for a completey new audience. the long time Nintendo fans are rather a nice extra for them.
 
Well you probably did outgrow Nintendo games. Or maybe it has nothing to do with age, more that you are just tired of the formula.

Still though, no offense, but selling and rebuying consoles was something I did when I was in high school and broke.
 
I hated the hell out of Nintendo because of the N64. Hated them even more for that giant coaster that was the Game Cube. Then I remembered that those systems weren't bad because of Nintendo's games, they were bad because of the third parties' lack of support.

So now I treat my Wii the way it is meant be treated: as a Nintendo box to occasionally go to when I want to take a break from the 360.

I still have no clue why somebody would want to own a 360 and a PS3 at the same time. Okay, I do but for just a handful of exclusives?

Your still REBUYING a PS3 though and what happens if you ever want a Wii again? Your gonna have to rebuy it? I dunno it just seems wasteful to me.

They would have been stuck in the same position had they tried doing the "next gen" thing. HD is still short of mainstream.

Same. I liked my N64, but after that the games went with Sony and then Microsoft. I go where the games go straight up.

not really, the Wii doesnt lose much value. and selling it plus the games frees another 400 Euros extra for a new TV (another 4 inch). Maybe after a pricedrop I'll get one again, if it has some great new games (just right now I doubt it)
