So I just beat resistance 1 and started playing 2...

settings were dull (who wants to fight aliens in a grey wetlands swamp?)

Okay, shut up, It's been a long time since I played Resistance 2, so I don't remember how good or bad the settings were, but that scenario sounds like it could be awesome if done right.

Sure it does, but it didn't help the game at all.

The spikes in difficulty and weird ai at times are off putting. Or maybe its just the fact that I am playing the 1 man john rambo army and trying to drag humanity's ass across the finish line. Meanwhile it feels like some of the enemies have aimbot on as soon as I come out of hiding..

R2 is the worst game I have ever finished. Not the worst game ever, but the worst I haven't given up on.

They threw out most of R1's mechanics and essentially every new one was trash. The game has horrible weapons balance, shit encounter design, crazy difficulty spikes, mindless AI and is at it's core not fun to play.
There is something about it, even playing the less offensive parts of the game, it just isn't fun.

I felt the graphics were good enough, there were some nice set pieces.

EDIT: I guess one of the problems is that Resistance have too many weapons for a two weapon system. They are all to eccentric and specialized for you to get by only by carrying two. This is why they always give you the weapon you need at every encounter.

The game barely feels "designed". It is more a collection of FPS tropes haphazardly thrown together with a over-scripted campaign that feels more like a 8 hour long E3-demo than anything else. A bit like the version of Halo 2 that Bungie scrapped after E3 2003, it looked cool, but it wasn't fun to play.

R1 and R3 are both great games though.

R2 is really bad, it's one of my most hated experiences this generation. I was just dying to get through the game, because I got R3 and I wanted to play that. It felt like the longest experience ever...

R3 is amazing though and played through the entire thing in 3d, which was actually really well done and fun!

Yep! ExceptI thought the graphics were really bad, but it had some beautiful concept work/design.

And now after a few hours of playing resistance 2, I feel a little depressed. I don't know if its dark gritty look to the game or humanity's bleak outlook so far. Anyone ever feel this way after playing resistance 2 or any other game?

R2's main problem isn't the tone of the game but rather how none of the weapons feel right and all the missed opportunities when it came to all of the boss fights, just too much of a rush job, they didn't put enough of an effort in character development during the game, that and the outdated graphics, Insomniac essentially got the game out in time at the expense of the quality of their product. People seem to like the co-op though, it was a bit too much of a repetitive grind for my taste.

I hate R2 as well. I can't help it, I wasn't indoctrinated... I hated it quite soon after buying it and popping it in the console. I liked the first one, really did. Bought the second right away and was just severely disappointed. Graphics were all over the place too, some corners were so fucking dark I couldn't see anything and there was no reason for it to be like that. It looked far worse, far less consistent than R1.

The weapon limit R2 held onto was lame, as it set R1 apart from the crowd. Same goes for the recharge system. There were more issues...

Ah yes, the story wasn't being fleshed out at all. I believe most of it was posted online. And the insta death enemies ie invisible walls, come on now... that might've worked during the PS1 era. There was this swarm boss in the cave, that was so fucking bad! Just atrocious. And how about the final boss?

Resistance 3 by the way is so. much. better. I didn't buy it because of 2 but once it hit the bargain bin I decided to give it a whirl. Its campaign was fantastic, one of the best I've played this gen. Some edge of your seat stuff right there, brilliant set pieces that are among the best of this gen. The MP was bare bones but liked it better than R2's bar the co-op which was kinda neat in R2.

So I just ordered R3 for the SP after reading good stuff about it on GAF. I loved R1, didn't play R2 as I read it was not that good. Will I miss anything by skipping R2 SP? Hope R3 is good like many of you have said :)

R2 had its moments. At least youtube the ending so you're all caught up. Enjoy R3.

OP how did you feel about R1?

R2 is a mostly disappointed game in almost every way after R1. I say this as someone who patiently waited for it with baited breath. So I felt the same way, but its not setting. It's just a general sinking feeling.

Things are mostly restored with R3. Not 100% but its a genuinely great game - just some big faults.

Resistance is a perpetual underdog series. It keeps fucking up, but there's so much there to like that you just keep rooting for it, even when it eventually fails to capitalize on what it could have become. This is core to what haters don't respond to, and explains the general gulf in opinion about the series. It could never be called overrated, cuz it's never consistently held in high enough esteem

Resistance 2 is one of my fav. FPS on the PS3, it is simply just amazing, I loved every moment of it.

As for depression, well it was pretty damn dark, it felt hopeless, and Resistance 3 was even darker in that regard, though R2 is still king to me.
