So I just bought Norton 360

Hmm...

Have you guys ever used a Norton or Symantec product before?

Right now I'm doing a full scan with MSE on my laptop, and... yuck. Molasses.

Norton 360 came with my laptop. So at one point I started getting notices from it that my web browsers were using too much memory. My system started to heat up a lot and lag. Talked to a few people, they all told me to remove Norton before doing anything else.

Problem was solved. This is just my personal experience, it may not happen to you.

You are using 2 of the worst anti viruses you can get that are mainstream ... Look up detection rates. Avira, panda, and avast score higher than either of those on most benches or whatever you call them.

Edit: worst is actually a bad way to put it, mediocre is probably more accurate.

I really don't get why some people have positive things to say about Norton. It's an over-protective resource hog.

Literally anything else is an improvement.
I can see that you haven't been using Norton since 2004? Since 2009 the entire suit have been re-coded and really good. Install time is 1 minute, compared to 30 min on the previous versions.

I have been using it since 2009 and and never ever noticed any degraded system performance. Also the notification system is really good now.

So stay up to date people.

NIS2013 is great, and NIS has been so for the past few years. The majority of those with a hatred towards it is based on their experiences 4 years ago (I know, I was one of those who hated it!).

For me it just sits there running silently in the background, barely uses any resources, and quite simply I don't even need to touch or worry about the thing.

MSE full scan is pig disgusting.

Over one hour and still scanning. 1:26:51 and still counting...

In comparison, when I was using the trial on my dad's computer, despite the amount of files (the 640 GB disk was filled with at least 100 GB of data), it can finish it in minutes.

I have all my media files on D and MSE takes like 10 hours or more just to scan it.

So I skip that torture and scan Windows partition only.

I use it daily, as well as Avast, AVG, NOD32, Symantec, MSE, Eset, Kaspersky & that stupid one with the Panda icon.

It's shit.

Edit: add Sophos and McAfee to that list as well.

I work in IT and I don't think i've come across a single AV program that hasn't caused a problem at some point.

McAfee being the worst offender.

My goodness. It's been forever since the last time I performed a full system scan with AV software on my laptop and not have it bog down the laptop so much that I can't browse the web effectively.

Norton, why so good now?

would not be my first choice. i don't believe in paying for av, but if i did, i'd probably go with either kaspersky or eset. although that's based on my usage of older versions and i don't really keep up with paid avs anymore. i know norton got better recently, but meh.

who would've thought that people would be using ie+norton in 2012.

on a similar note, i was browsing the google play store the other day, and i just learned that you can buy av software for your mobile phone (android). wtf is up with that?

BestBuy gave me a 1-year subscription when I purchased a hard drive last year. I couldn't throw it to the garbage fast enough. MSE and MalwareBytes is all you need.

You intentionally bought malware?

You are on your own.

Still better than the now-performance-hogging-scans of MSE and non-existent protection.

Viruses get so scared of it that they turn 360 degrees and walk away.

*giggles*

If you are going to pay at least use ESET Smart Security.

Keep in mind that I'm buying retail. If I can't find somewhere convenient to buy something, it won't be bought.

Have you ever used IE9 or newer?

Android malware exists, though it's more of a concern for Android users that rely on sideloading apps instead of the Play Store.

A hard drive that gives you free subs? Next time you might want to keep it, if only to try it out and see if you don't like it.

We'll see in 49 days. (59 - 10 to account for snail mail)

My big thing is that my computer is about four years old and probably has some registry issues, I run ccleaner and MSE on occasion.... what should I switch to and preferably free.

edit: i also run development tools on my pc and ccleaner will frequently flag custom file formats that I make which is annoying.

You use one that's always on?

Sometimes I would run into issues where Anti Malware software wouldn't work with something like Norton when I had that years ago (for free). AVG would do the same too.

The time it take for scans to get done is dependent on CPU, so I have a duo core 2.2 ghz, I guess an all day affair on my machine correct?

Yeah, they detect each other as malware. For that reason you should only use one at a time.

I hate to jinx it, but in all my years, my only computers that never got infected had no antivirus running.

The worse kind of malware is the kind that you never know until it's too late. If your anti-malware solution detects something, it isn't indicative of a lack of protection - instead, it actually means that the malware got caught.

Also, great customer support. I was having activation problems with my online storage, and a live chat later, everything is peachy.

Is trend micro any good? I've never used it before.

I like switching between different anti-virus programs, I think I am going to try a paid program this year.
