So I just bumped my friend's car

Gonna have to repaint that whole thing, plus the impact threw off the air pressure in the tire. Can't just replace the one, have to replace all four or the car isn't going to be safe. The suspension is also going to need to be replaced. You're looking at about $1k if you're lucky. Yep. The fact that it's a vintage car though, may be looking to double that. Especially if they can't match the old paint job exactly the first go around and can't find vintage parts.

Lol for an 89 lexus?! haha

I was in a parking lot @ giant about a year ago when this old man backed up straight into the back of my car without even looking. He didn't even notice he hit me and was going to drive away when someone coming into the parking lot told he him he hit me.

I don't think he should have been driving because I looked at his license and he was 94 plus he hit me pretty hard and didn't even notice lol.

Totally fucked up the rear bumper bad. It came to about $850 and they had to replace it.

My car was a '04 Infinite G35 Coupe.

I think your friend is nuts.

First: If you damage someone else's shit you should have to pay for it, friend or not. "Sorry about your grandma's hand-made cabinet, indoor baseball just sounded so cool! We're cool though, right bro?" Whole lot of irresponsible people in here, either that or a whole lot of people who have no idea what insurance is for (hint: exactly this sort of situation).

Second: It's an '89 Lexus, unless it is in pristine condition and he's a Lexus collector I can almost guarantee it's not worth fixing.

I'm not saying he shouldn't pay for it since it was his fault. But its a lot of hassle and a lot more money to put this through insurance.

Fuck you for fucking up your friend's car. Doesn't matter what kind of car it is, he can have pride in his vehicle and you need to make it right.

I have no idea how to estimate the costs because it is apparent the OP has no idea what the parts of a car are called and is describing the situation incredibly poorly.
Yeah, he wanted to damage it.

People kind of drive around in huge fucking machines. Shit happens.

I know nothing about cars but I can honestly tell your friend is trying to get profit.

Okay, first off - Copernicus, you're an idiot. You too sk3.

It's actually an 91' Lexus and I just took a pic of the damage. That's why I haven't been able to post more info. His car is already a piece of shit.

Also, I highlighted the damaged area. So what do you think GAF?:

lol, yeah, it appears you did...

I forgot how much of a piece of shit his car was. My bad. haha

But yeah.

Oh! And he took that part off. I just dented it. That's why it's not there.

Doesn't matter shit it's a 91' car, who cares if a little piece of metal came off the car works the same.

It's not as if the entire rear bumber fell off or a window broke.

Did he forcefully take the piece off? Cause and image of that looks a lot worse than something that was still mostly attached.

yea sounds like a lot of bull fuck to me take it to a body shop in the hood get it fixed for cheap.

You dented his car, it's not like you fingered his baby sister.
or thats what he was doing when he bumped his friends car

Look the Kelly Blue Book for a 1991 Lexus is around $1250 give or take depending on condition. He's not getting a thousand for that and if he wants you to pay out of pocket it's simple extortion.

That'll buff right out.

If all you damaged was that one plastic molding then I would write it up as replace that and 2 hours body(its hard to tell from the picture). That piece probably comes painted. So a lot of states are 40h for body. 2x40 + I'm guessing 75 for that little molding, plus maybe 120 if it needs to be painted. Add 5% tax.

So I'm guessing 162.75, or 288.75 with paint.

Also doing estimates from blurry pictures and few angles is silly anyway.

My advice is just try and snap the molding back in, its not like you can see the damage behind it anyway. It'll look ok.

The guy who owns the Lexus may very well have to cover his deductible before being reimbursed if the damage is extensive to his car. The same thing happened to me when my car was totaled, the insurance company initially paid out cost of repairs minus the deductible. Eventually he will receive compensation from the insurance company but it's hardly a simple process.

That depends on what happened with that claim. I feel like we aren't getting the entire story from you. I have a few questions for you.

#1: Did the insurance company initially think you car was repairable only to have the body shop take it apart and find more damage that made it totaled?

#2: Was there a liability investigation going on to determine who was at fault? Was it not very clear cut?

#3: Did the other party's insurance tell you that there was a coverage investigation that needed to be completed before they could cover your damages?

$4: Did you need to get your car fixed immediately as you needed something to drive? This is usually why you go with your own carrier, pay your deductible and wait for subrogation to recover your deductible and pay it back later.

That is at the very least a $1500 repair. You need a dog leg, 2 claddings (one for the quarter panel and one for the door), paint on the door and entire quarter panel. You can probably get by without blending the front door as the damage is far enough back and underneath the claddings.

If you lived in Toronto OP I know a great place who could fix it for less than $200. $1000+? He must be having a larf.

You are on crack. That's no where even close to a 200 dollar repair

You're crazy, no body shop in their right mind would quote out replacing the quarter panel on a car this old. They'd just work it back into shape and call it a day. 4 hours of bodyshop tops between paint and fixing.

I didn't say replace the quarter, but there is a lot of work needed on the dog leg. Sorry, didn't mean to replace it. If I was an appraiser I would write at least 6 hours on the dog leg plus paint labor.

The moulding is a cheap piece that any shop will be able to find used for a cheap price. That dent is in a bad spot though. My guess is the shop will want 6-8 hours repair time for that. Then there's paint. I'm guessing at the end of the day we are looking at anywhere from $600-1,200 depending on the shop you go to.

#1: This might sound surprising, but our insurances (mine is allstate) hasn't contacted us yet. Also, no. He hasn't taken it to the shop yet.

#2: Actually no. I just took responsibility.

#3: No. Not at the moment.

#4: It wasn't that bad. My car got a small paint scratch on the bumper, that's it. Therefore, I didn't feel the need to do anything to my own car.

We live in Ca. Would the price vary on the state you live in? This is the first time i've had an accident.

You on the other hand must be on magic mushroom. His mate took the bumped part out, It doesn't look half bad. If he listens to you and pay the amount you quoted, he might as well bent over and let his mate have a free ride while he's at it.

OP if they quote you over a grand, might as well go out and buy him a new one.

I was an appraiser for 3 years in the Los Angeles area, if you are in that area I can give you a recommendation for a body shop.

And, those questions weren't really directed at you.

I love how ridiculously wild the estimates are on this car from posters.

"It's over 1000!"

"Here's the math and it's probably like, $200."

"No, that's clearly $1500 for that missing piece on that 20 year old car."

Well, you can get shoddy work done in many places. That isn't how it works though. I mean, depending on the car I probably wouldn't even get it fixed, but if you want it to be fixed right it will be 1500+ guaranteed.

We'll see who's right as soon as he gets an estimate. Repairs are always higher than people think they are going to be. They don't understand that labor and paint costs add up VERY quickly.

Because a 91 Ls400 with a blown HG would cost him $900 in "total". there is no chance in hell a simple body work would cost him anywhere near $1500.

don't order the piece like an idiot hit up a pick and pull

This is a very good idea, but at the same time there is a significant amount of body work needed on that dog leg, and paint on the entire quarter panel and rear door. This is assuming that the impact did not damage any rear suspension components. At first glance it doesn't appear that is the case though.

that looks like about a $250 to me. either you need that piece of molding replaced or fix it with some bondo and a little paint job. If i was you, i would go around a junk yard and just find that molding that shouldn't even cost you more than $20.

Go to a body shop and tell them that. Then report back.

I'm just saying why bother repair it if it ends up costing $1000+?

If it's $200, alright fine. But it's not THAT noticiable. You could leave it like that, and I would'nt care. It's not as if it's a 2010 model, it's a 20 year old car. It will be dead soon anyway.

I completely agree, I wouldn't even think about repairing that damage. That said, he has every right to want to have it repaired.

That's one problem with writing old cars, every owner thinks its all related damage. Or at least tells me they think its all related damage.

What insurance company do you write for? It comes down to can you prove it's NOT related damage.
