So, I just realized Metallica's "Don't Tread On Me" uses riffs from "America"

I was working out and the song came up, and since I had just watched some clips from West Side Story, I noticed that the opening riffs for Don't Tread On Me are from the song America. I came home and did some Google-fu, and sure enough!

GENIUS! It adds a little bit more spice to the song!

So, GAF, what are some other cool/easter egg/genius things that albums or songs have? Or even little known things or misconceptions about songs/albums!

I don't think this is 100% related but since we're talkin Metallica, I was watching some early Ramones videos and noticed that Metallica covered one of their songs "Cretin Hop". I sorta knew they liked some punk stuff but never thought they would cover them. Thought it was a neat idea, till I heard their cover... er not so great.

Its form their St. Anger years, I believe. Thus, the reason it sucks haha.

Too bad it wasnt off Garage Days, those are masterful covers. Even their newer Remember Tomorrow cover is awesome.

Yeah, I first remember hearing that riff and it driving me crazy that I couldn't remember where it was from. Then I saw West Side Story again and my mind was blown. Very cool little reference.

Dream Theater's albums are filled with stuff like this. The song Octavarium alone references tons of other albums/musicians/bands/actors in lyrical and instrumental form.

Another one that always stands out to me is in the song "In the Name of God" the Battle Hymn of the Republic is sung in the outro but in a minor scale I believe.
In the Name of God

Another hidden thing in that song is a part in the drums at 5:51 to 6:07 that when converted from morse code is the phrase "Eat my ass and balls."

That's not exactly supposed to be hidden.
But let me drop some old school examples on your ass.

Tchaikovsky's 1812 Overture (trust me, you know that piece, go to 2:40 if you're not sure) which commemorate a battle between Napoleon and the Russian empire contain elements from both La Marseillaise and God Save the Tsar, where the latter musically overpower the former, to reflect the turn in the tide of the battle.

Yeah, 19th century old school.

look out, the high school kiddies and degenerates will label you a hipster

This one might belong a bit more on the gaming side, but in the movie "Jonah Hex", as Jonah's entering the cemetery to talk to Jeb Turnbull, the flute line that's playing is rather similar to the Ghost House theme from SMW on SNES.

Can't find a clip of that part of the movie, but ghost house tune for good measure:

Interesting. Don't Tread on Me is on my list of two songs I have on repeat. The other is All Nightmare Long. My thing with Metallica is that I go through phases. I'll just listen to the same couple of songs over and over again, then eventually switch to some other songs. This cycle has been ongoing for the last 10 years.

It just happens that Don't Tread on Me is currently in that list.
