So, I prefer slow paced FPS

I know this is highly unusual, as most of people praise fast paced FPS, but somehow, i enjoy more slow paced FPS. For example, while i enjoy the recent Doom, i prefer the original doom which allowed you to play much slower, set up ambushes, use monsters infighting at your own advantage, etc.

If i had to name a reference of modern FPS, for me, it would be Bioshock 2. I loved to be able to hide behind corners and trap enemies. But i dislike Bioshock Infinite because of the pace that is a bit faster.

Are there people here enjoying when a FPS is slow paced?

Yup, it's the reason why I am a big fan of insurgency.
I mostly like playing tactical co-op because it's a such change of pace of the current FPS scene, too bad tactical FPS games are hard to come by.

This specific example might actually nail what I disliked about BI's combat! Hadn't thought about it in those terms before.

I like both. I enjoy the visceral, physical feeling of fast paced gunplay but I also find slower paced shooters to be thrilling in an altogether more cerebral and strategic manner.

OP, you should check out Arkane's recent output if you haven't already. Dishonored, Dishonored 2, and Prey.

I guess they're not really FPS games though. Most would call them "immersive sims", but I feel you'd enjoy them.

I'm enjoying those more, too. The main reason for that is the fact I'm playing on consoles and it just pisses me off to play using a controler as it's either 'slow as hell' or ' I can't be accurate enough'.

Stealth is the way to go always for me.

I'm not much of an FPS player at all, but I find that pretty much every genre is improved by an aspect of strategic decision-making that rewards craftiness and planning. It's not just about pace, although the flexibility to proceed at a patient pace opens up a space for decision-making. You can rush in guns blazing, but you don't have to, and it's having the choice that matters.

This is why I also found BioShock 2 to be the most fun to play of the three as well, particularly the defence segments late in the game that are all about setting traps—whereas Infinite, regardless of whether you like to take things fast or slow, was all about moving forward, forward, forward, all while constraining your decision space with that idiotic two-weapon limit. That's not an attack on linearity, either: part of why Half-Life 2 and its episodes always clicked with me as well was that if you are a slow player, as I am, they let you take the time you need to read the room and decide on your preferred approach.

In this light, Deus Ex: HR is still my favourite in recent memory.

Those aren't really FPS games IMO. Especially Dishonored. That's just a first person action adventure with RPG elements.

I like slow paced as well. DOOM was enjoyable, but it could have been so much better if the pace was much slower and the story telling was a bit deeper (like Half-Life, for example). Now it's a simple repetitive arcade shooter where at times, it's like you're in a go-kart instead of being on your feet. Room -> gore nest ->monsters -> repeat.

Metro Redux is very nice example of a slow (and really good paced) FPS game with a good story. Check it out if you haven't. It's very cheap.

Hey everyone, this is Dusk Golem aka AestheticGamer. I have posted on NeoGAF since 2011, and have decided to resign. I have enjoyed posting about horror games here for years, but I no longer wish to support the site and will be leaving for good. I will still be around the internet, I go by AestheticGamer on YouTube, I make games on Steam as Yai Gameworks, and I plan to go by Dusk Golem on other forums. I'll be joining an off-set of the GAF community leaving to try other ventures like ResetEra (Official Twitter for that here: https://twitter.com/reseteraforum ). I hope some of you who read this may consider it, and I plan to try to expose more people to horror games in the years to come. Just not here.

I hope you all are having a good day, and know I always loved the community, and in the end it's the community I'm going to stick with, not the site itself. If you want to follow me, my official Twitter is here: https://twitter.com/AestheticGamer1

That's a flaw in Doom's level design more than anything. I liked that it was fast and visceral but the corridor -> arena -> corridor -> arena format is tiring compared to the more organic feel of Doom 1 and 2 levels. That's an aspect they should really improve on in the inevitable sequel.

Personally I'm not a huge fan of first person games involving stealth. I tried the Dishonored 2 demo and while it is a competent and gorgeous game, I felt I spent way too much time moving slowly crouched in it.

Both are great!

Doom is one of my all time favorites, but so is the Metro series. Both are great for much different reasons though.

Recently RE7 was a great blend because it starts much slower but by the end(and some dlc stuff) You're blasting through shit rapidly.

I'm not good enough at FPS to really enjoy the fast paced ones plus I find none stop shooting gets really tiresome fast and I need down time segments to recharge. I loved the Half Life series because they had a good balance between shooting segments and quieter exploration/puzzle segments.

These days I mostly just play first person games that offer a stealth option like Dishonored. I played the demo of Doom and was tired of it before even reaching the end of that.

Conversely with a good third person melee games I can happily have action all day long.

I'll second this. They're about as FPS in the fact that the interface is first person and the main interactions very much are steeped in the controls of a shooter (as well as including shooting as a main component anyways). If you liked Bioshock 2 and the fact you could plan ahead and even use other methods of engagement in firefights - like, Prey is the best example of that.

RE7 is also pretty great - slow paced and tense horror, in a first person shooter interface.

Yeah, I can't play pure FPS games anymore (y'all got any more of them rpg elements?) and the fps/rpg hybrids that I typically play are somewhat slower in nature.

I recently went through the entire STALKER trilogy (again) and thoroughly enjoyed it. All 3 games are excellent if you patch them up with mods and the gameplay is often quite tactical in nature. They're also very...deliberate. You have to pay attention to your gear and what type of activity you're doing which adds a whole new dimension to the game. And that's before you get into faction relations and such.

edit: Forgot to add, in MP it's the opposite for me. The faster the better. When I was playing Black Ops 2 with a group of friends we did a comparison and when they were at 150 kills per hour in our Kill confirmed matches I was pushing 240. MP is completely different though, since you're playing against human opponents it engages your brain in a completely different way than when you play vs ai.

I'm the same, I prefer the slower, more strategic shooter.

Take a look at the following, some may be of interest:
  • Metro Redux
  • Stalker series
  • Far Cry 3, although arcade style, allows that creativity in planning an assault.
  • Fear games
  • Deus Ex games
  • Singularity
  • Crysis

I know of it yes but wasn't and still isn't in the mood for another ww2 fps yet. It also isn't doing too well is it?

Besides I am playing other games currently.

I've played on my lunch breaks a few times this week, and if nothing else it found me a game quite quickly. I haven't looked at the server browser to check the population though.

Yes, i am in the same boat OP. I like games like Bioshock, Dishonored etc as they allow me to play at my own pace and let me explore.. I dislike regular shooters like CoD because they always try to set the pace for you. Usually they ramp up the music/pace to 11 with a go-go-go attitute and grunts yelling at you to move on. Now its been a while since i played a CoD game so they might have improved. I just like the feeling if being alone, isolated, in a place that seems much bigger than it is. Like Rapture, City 17, etc...

Cool. Do hope the best for the dev.

Maybe will play it one day especially if it goes on for years like insurgency.

No dude, it's only you.

If I enjoyed them, I'd recommend these modern ones:

- Stalker Shadow of Chernobyl (I feel like both sequels have flaws. IMO don't bother with them)
- Prey (fucking excellent and basically what Bioshock was advertised to be)
- Playerunknown's Battlegrounds
- Crysis 1 (on highest difficulty)

Well, I normally tend to lean towards more fast paced FPS games but I have to say I do enjoy the ones that mix it up..

One example would be Dishonored for me which I can play extremely stealthy and tactical or I can just go in and dish some serious hurting.

DOOM and Titanfall 2 killed any hope of going back to slow paced shooters.

I tried to pick up Destiny again after finishing DOOM. It felt like the character moved from molasses. So slow, so dull.

Each to their own, but I welcome more fast paced shooters. Nothing beats the frantic action.

I think it's the on-the-fly thinking and reacting to changes which make them interesting to me. The set up and planning of slower paced FPSs isn't fun for me. I love strategy games though, so maybe I get my fix from something like XCOM rather than an FPS.

I second the Dishonoured and Killzone: Shadowfall recommendation. Regarding the latter, the slower gameplay is a big reason why I think it was panned by many. The O.W.L. abilities let you be much more tactical.

Immersive sims are great for this. "Thinking man's FPS games".

With Prey and Dishonored about there's no better time, too. Just finished the Brigmore Witches DLC for Dishonored 1 and it's 9/10, and Dishonored 2 was my GOTY last year. Incredible game.

Battlegrounds FPS servers seem pretty damn amazing.

Rainbow Six Siege is incredible and very slow.

Uh i don't think that's what is meant by "slow paced" necessarily. I'd still consider Destiny pretty fast, at least on the upper half of the scale. It can be intense.

Fast paced first person shooters are god awful. Absolutely TERRIBLE.

Slow paced, tactical and "I actually have to think about this" gameplay is significantly better.

I have a love for the arena UT/Q3A style shooter, but also a game like The Betrayer which is slow as hell by comparison
