Chicago to Shanghai.

I have a back pack loaded with:

Prescription xanax
Surface Pro 3 with Civ V, EU4, Pinball FX2, and Stuck of Truth.
Dell Inspiron 14 loaded with Game of Thrones and The Wire
Android phone loaded up with Giant Bombcast and Dinner Party Download.
Snacks.

Gonna play some games until I get bored. Gonna watch some TV u til I get bored. Gonna eat some xanax and drink some vodka and hope I sleep for the entire rest of the flight. So far 24 hours without sleep to prep myself for tiredness and jet lag.

Worst part of the trip. Wish me luck.

I've done a lot of 14h trips and barely ever play any games even when I bring them. Usually just watch a ton of movies (airplanes tend to have a lot of new movies available) and try to sleep sometime to get used to the sleep schedule at the destination.

I wonder if they'll have Lucy...

Sounds like you got it down.

Any books? I dont like to game on planes i prefer to read, listen to music and relax.

Am heading to Taipei on Saturday for the first time using business class so this should be a real treat :)

A month ago I had a 12 hour flight to Buenos Aires, that got turned around back to Texas halfway into the flight because of the cabin losing air pressure, and then a few hours after returning to Texas got right back on a 12 hour flight to Buenos Aires. Good times.

I find it hard to be fully immersed in games/TV/movies on planes.

Something about it, IDK. Probably the constant notion that I'm already dead.

Used to be worse though.

That's me also a month ago between Lisbon -> Helsinki, difference being it's a 5 hour flight and it happened like 30-60 minutes into the flight and problem was some instruments malfunction (they said it was the radar). Still sucked and I still panicked internally.

It's not that long really, you have more than enough entertainment. Minus 2 hours for take off and landing preparation, minus 6 hours for sleep/naps, minus 1 hour for meals, and you only really have 5 hours to kill. A breeze really. Enjoy Shanghai!

Watch movies back to back. I remember one time watching 3 movies in a row and then sleeping halfway through "Her".

I used to plan like this for even shorter flights, every time I never use even half of what I brought on board.

now I'm a minimalist and bring just phone and loaded iPad, everything else gets checked. Snacks are unimportant.

No books sadly. I can't focus on them very well when flying for some reason. Cramped space I'm thinking

I had the 2 seats to my left empty (center section, aisle on the right) on two consecutive flights(!) so I kept mostly napping and sipping water. Only had the time for 2 movies. Forgot to pack my own shows.

Gonna eat some xanax and drink some vodka.
Nooo that should be your last resort if you can't sleep with earplugs / IEMs.

I had a 16 hour flight from Dallas to Hong Kong 2 weeks ago and going back home in 2 days. Your plane should have plenty of newer movies/shows to watch but bring your own too. I watched part of the 4th season of Game of Thrones, Rise of the Planet of the Apes, Chef, Day after tomorrow, 22 jump street and a couple of others I can't remember (On AmericanAirlines btw). I also stayed up all night the night before so that I would sleep as much as possible on the plane and it worked like a charm. It was actually a pretty nice flight.

You going for business or for pleasure OP?

lol. Frequent Paris->Osaka flyer here.

I'm pretty much the opposite.

I carry but a Kindle and my phone (and noise cancelling headphones).
I eat but what I'm being given.
I do not take spleeping pills.
I try and avoid alcohol.
I get rested before I fly.

and the 10/11 hrs fly by...

Most important thing I do is to get seats with more space for my legs. And schedule my activities for day 1 according to the time of day (or night) my flight arrives.

10 hour flights are often nicer than 3 hour flights because you have time to relax, watch some movies and have a decent meal (yeah yeah, but I generally enjoy in flight food). That all depends on whether you're not sat in economy behind someone who reclines all flight long, though. Then it's hell.

Kind of agree. With a 2-3 hour flight you're always waiting for the landing, on a 7-12 hour flight you just know it will take forever going in and you do something else to occupy yourself. Makes it easier on the mind but it's still a lot harder on the body.

I forgot, bring shorts and a tshirt in a bag with you. As soon as you take off and can go to the bathroom put tshirt and shorts on, keep your better clothes for when you land.

On the subject, I'm flying a lot lately and I'd love to be able to sleep without paying for "fully flat bed" class as it's a bit expensive.

Anyone have any drug / herbal remedy suggestions?

Had a 14 flight from LA to Sydney and my friends parent's gave us all some sleeping pills. Well I've always had weird effects with Benadryl and they must have been Benadryl based or something similar. I became SO TIRED but the medicine would not let me fall asleep no matter what I tried. It actually became excruciating because of how tired I was towards the end of the flight. I think I sleep the entire first 24 hours after we landed and the effects wore off.

Sounds like my average work day, minus the drugs and booze of course.

I watch 2-4 movies a day Monday-Friday and fill in the rest with podcasts, audiobooks, and music. I watched all of Lost in around 2 weeks.

By the time I am out of work, I don't really want anything to do with media other than play some video games. I watch hundreds of movies every year while I work.

That sort of sounds like when I'm trying to sleep normally. I'M TRYING SO HARD TO SLEEP AND I'M SO TIRED. :(

So the "alcohol and Xanax" crowd...what do you guys do if your plane runs into an issue and you get diverted or something else happens? I cannot imagine attempting to be a functioning human being in that state is pleasant.

What do you do for a living?

ive never been able to sleep on flights, just too uncomfortable.

usual plan of action is to play the Vita/other handhelds for as long as i can before being bored/tired/run out of battery, then watch tv-shows and movies on the iPad/whatever is available and in decent quality on the in flight tv-system. Repeat.

oh, and don't watch special effects heavy movies on those crappy screens. Some R-rated movies are also censored with audio bleeps or just straight up cut scenes.

it will test your stamina, and hope that you were smart enought to book a flight that lands in the evening local time so you wont miss out on a whole day by going straight to bed when you land :D

Don't do what my sister did and not bother to drink water because "I'm not moving much so I don't really need it."

Had to take her to the hospital for dehydration.

anything more than 2 hours is torturing for me, my longest one is 7.5 hours, and I couldn't sleep!

I forgot, bring shorts and a tshirt in a bag with you. As soon as you take off and can go to the bathroom put tshirt and shorts on, keep your better clothes for when you land.

shorts is too cold :/
