So I'm getting a PSP... (couple of questions inside)

Error

Jealous of the Glory that is Johnny Depp
So I decided to get a PSP since I couldn't for the love of god find a 360

couple of questions

1) giga pack or value pack?

2) what game should I buy?

3) dead pixel issue... how bad is it?

4) PSP region free? I can play imported games?

btw NO DS vs PSP war bullshit here.

If you're buying new, the Giga Pack is the best value, as you're getting a 1GB Duo (Which usually retails for $100 and there are select deals for it for $75 online), but try to find a used giga pack if possible for the best bargain.

1) giga pack, no question about this one

2) what games do you like to play?

3) not as bad is it's made out to be, well also depends on how anal you can get and the position of a dead/stuck pixel

4) yes, region free games, not for most movies though

1) Giga pack seems the way to go.

2) Lumines, Lumines, and more Lumines. Ridge Racer is great as well and I guess you can't go wrong with GTA LCS. I really, really enjoyed Metal Gear Acid as well though it may not be your cup of tea.

3) Not all that bad but definitely an issue. My first systsem had 2 dead pixles at launch and I sent it in the very next day. I can't stand any kind of screen defects but it really depends on how much it bugs you.

4) Absolutely. Region lock is only on movies.

I play almost everything with the exception of sports game.

yeah Lumines is a must and GTA too.

Well, if this means anything, I bought a Giga Pack about a week ago and I have one stuck pixel right in the middle of the screen. Haven't really tried anything drastic to get it out yet, like this, but if it doesn't wake up after a few weeks I'll bitch to Sony to get a replacement.

In other words, I guess it still must be a somewhat persistent problem.

Lumines and GTA then, Burnout Legends might be a good one for you too. If you like Dungeon Crawlers (Dungeon Siege, Champions of Norrath, Baldurs Gate) I would have suggested Untold Legends but now I suggest Xmen Legends 2. Socom is pretty fun too.

Wanted to make a topic about this but did not want to make another PSP topic so I'll just go ahead and ask here:

I'm getting a PSP for a loved one for Christmas. What is the cheapest I can get a working used PSP for and where can I get it? Gamestop is now selling used PSPs for $200, as are EB Games now that they're owned by them. Is that really the best price that can be had if I don't go into Flea Markets & Pawn Shops?

The LCD dead pixel issue isn't going to clear up, I don't think. It's a consequence of the LCD manufacturing process. The only thing I'm unsure of is Sony's return policy. My machine has nothing wrong with it....it has a screen protector that I bought when I determined it was in good shape.

Get GTA, Burnout, Lumines, PoP (if you haven't played it already)...all quality titles.

Check out the Buy/Trade forums over at CAG and DVDTalk.

Also, Errorsk4, after re-reading your initital post it seems you're taking the PSP now over the eventual 360. DON'T. For the love of all that is good, drop this plan right now and wait it out! :D

It should be less frequent over time tho. It's not like the psp is some 19 inch high resolution lcd monitor (even then it's pretty easy to get a flawless screen).

X-Men legends is excellent on the PSP. Metal Gear Ac!d is definitely an aquired taste, but can probably be found for $29 pretty easily now.

How is Kingdom of Paradise? Gamefly is moving slow because of Christmas and I've been curious about trying this game out. My PSP needs RPGS badly

It's an action RPG and I'm a whore for turn based. I'm going for Legend of Heroes as soon as I can free up the change.

1) giga pack or value pack?
Giga Pack.

2) what game should I buy?
Lumines
Grand Theft Auto: LCS
Wipeout Pure
Tokobot
Socom: FTB
Legend of Heroes
Ridge Racer
Kingdom of Paradise
Metal Gear Acid
Virtua Tennis

3) dead pixel issue... how bad is it?
I've got 3, I believe. They're, like, specs. I hope I don't get more, but as is they don't bother me at all.

4) PSP region free? I can play imported games?
Yes, region free, for games.

It's a mixed bag for me, I still don't know what to think of it. I mean it's not bad but I think it's just not my cup of tea. As far as RPG's goes I cannot recommend Xmen Legends 2 enough, also Legend of Heroes seem to be rated mediocore by review sites but seem to be well liked here on GAF. Also if you by chance haven't played Untold Legends then by all means do.

I'd say it's better to wait for the sequel, which is fast coming. UL1 can be satisfying if you love dungeon crawlers, but the lack of real quests and challenge means it gets repetitive fast

I bought the Giga Pack just over a week ago, and I'm already on my third PSP. Every one I saw, including the one I kept, had stuck or dead pixels. The first one was the worst, with more pixels getting stuck in the fisrt two days.

The pixel un-sticker video did nothing for me.

Go into the transaction knowing you will have screen defects. Don't allow yourself a bit of hope, because you probably won't spot them right off the bat.

This sucks, but it is the reality of the situation.

1) Giga Pack

2) No sports games?

Monster Hunter Portable (JP) (just arrived - it's been pretty good thus far)
Wipeout Fusion (Euro rev)
Ridge Racers
Tales of Eternia (JP)
Grand Theft Auto: Liberty City Stories
Lumines
Puyo Puyo 2
Prince of Persia: Revelations
Darkstalkers Chronicle: The Dark Tower
Metal Gear Acid
Twisted Metal: Head On

My PSP doesn't have one single dead pixel, but it's really hard to press up+right and down+right on the d-pad. It's no bother when I play PSP games like Burnout and Lumines, but on SNES and NES-emus it annoys the crap out of me :(

And btw... doesn't the Giga Pack release with 2.01 on the system? If that's the case, I would problaby go for the Value Pack. EMUs and homebrew is the shit.

1) giga pack or value pack?

Get the gigapack if you can get one with 2.0, but you can find 1GB pro duos for ~$50 anyway

2) what game should I buy?

Lumines, Ridge Racer, Xmen Legends II, GTA, SOCOM, Kingdom of Paradise, Wipeout Pure. It depends on what you like, but there's something for everyone.

3) dead pixel issue... how bad is it?
It's an issue, like with any other LCD-based item. Sony has a return policy w/ a zero dead pixel minimum, but they still send out replacement systems with dead pixels. My system has none (and no stuck pixels)

4) PSP region free? I can play imported games?

Region free (games) FTW!

1) giga pack or value pack?
Giga pack

2) what game should I buy?
GTA:LCS
Lumines
Ridge Racer
Virtua Tennis

3) dead pixel issue... how bad is it?
No big deal.

4) PSP region free? I can play imported games?
Yes.

so I got the PSP finally.

I got the giga pack went through hell to get it, sold out in a lot of places. nevertheless I got it that's what matter I bought it with GTA LCS was going to buy to Lumines but man 300+50(GTA LCS)+34(M&L PiT)+30(FFIV). shit that hurt me ^_^ so I'll get Lumines later.

ok the system fucking rocks, the screen is sex. I never actually had a hands on with the system before buying it.

GTA LCS is brilliant, I still remember Liberty City very well man I played GTA3 a lot and it shows.

anyway a fine christmas gift for me bought by me:)

Lumines is under $20 at Target, if you can find it. $20 is a great price.

It may be even cheaper now (someone got it for $10 a while ago)

1) giga pack or value pack?
giga
3) dead pixel issue... how bad is it?

4) PSP region free? I can play imported games?
yes

:lol a little late but thanks anyway.

2) Kingdom of Paradise - the boxart looks goofy and I almost didnt pick it up. It's actually a pretty good game, especially for a handheld.

3) My first psp had zero dead pixels until one day it got 24 stuck pixels. I traded it in and got one with 5 dead pixels. I traded that one in also and now I have one 2 dead pixels.

1) giga pack or value pack?

Value pack. the only reason to HAVE a gig card is for homebrew, and the PSP you get with the giga pack doesn't let you PLAY homebrew, so it's kind of a catch-22.

2) what game should I buy?

None yet. Wait for Tales of Eternia to be released in Europe.

3) dead pixel issue... how bad is it?

I've had 3 PSPs in my time (I sold my launch one, and yes, I went through with buying one for homebrew and one for commercial games, but the last 2 I bought used,) 2 have had 1 bad pixel that you couldn't see except for a black screen, and one had no dead pixels. Maybe I'm just lucky.

4) PSP region free? I can play imported games?

Yes

I was out at a Media Play yesterday, found the UMD movie rack to be huge, and there were only 5 PSP games sitting on another shelf. Granted their going out of business and losing stock, but seriously, I had no idea how many UMD movies had been released.
But seriously, this game drought it getting sadder and sadder for this thing.

On the dead pixel issue, I have counted 6 dead pixels and one stuck one. But they're not clustered. I rarely see any of them when I'm playing. I do see them on still images, however.

There is nothing you could even give me for the PSP right now that I wouldn't just sell off. For my tastes, the PSP is dead in the water. It's a great little thing to mess around with tech-wise, and there are a few imports, but the thing it does best (games) it's just still very weak title wise.

$50 games. Are you prepared to pay that for a portable system?

Oh yea. all those damn 50 dollar games....too bad when I went christmas shopping at Best Buy they had so many 30 and 40 dollar games to make this argument so old and useless now.

PSP has plenty of games for just about anyone but a person dead set against enjoying it.

The top games from 3rd party developers are mostly $50. Are you disputing this?

Besides, when did I say this was a problem? You jumped on me assuming I had a problem with this.

From absolutes

I give this a 2 out of 10 on the troll scale and a +2 bonus modifier for impressive backpedalling, summing up to a 4/10 (weaksauce). :-þ

Nah, I just went and looked through a bunch of $30 and $40 PSP games. Might as well stick to the $50 ones.

When is it never personal opinion? Seriously, you that foolish?

Why would I be dead set against enjoying something? There's just nothing for me to play on the thing! You people have got to get over this whole "OH MY GOD HE MUST BE A SONY-HATER" mindset.
