So I'm looking for a JRPG on my 360.

I've tried to avoid being on of those people with the threads about what to buy. But uh, apparently I am one of them, so lets just get down to it. I've been craving a JRPG, for whatever reason, and so far the two that have stood out to me are Eternal Sonata and Tales of Vesperia. Now here are some things I should mention as far as my preferences are concerned.

First off, I prefer turn based battles. I know neither are turn based, but it seemed like ES was closer to what I would like, i.e. being able to think out my attacks rather than just go by twitch instincts.

Secondly, I don't like grinding or random encounters. Not sure about grinding in either of these games, but as far as I know they are both free of random battles.

That's pretty much it actually. So which should I go for, and possibly something else if you feel the need to recommend. Also, don't say wait for FFXIII, because I already am waiting for that.
My favorites by far are The Last Remnant, Lost Odyssey, and Enchanted Arms (yes I like the game, fuckoff) everything else has been subpar...And I own them all.

Blue Dragon. Can't be said enough. ES just sucks. Alright to start with but boy what a drag. Only played a bit of Vesperia demo but couldn't get into it.

Also, Blue Dragon.
Blue Dragon

Sequel plz.

Vesperia has the best story, characters, combat and exploration this gen. It's a no-brainer.
You're wrong Lost Odyssey's story is superior, shit the dream sequences alone possess more complexicty than ToV in its entirety.

Blue Dragon is really not very good, the class system is atrocious, you can equip anybody with anything...Which has the potential to turn the characters into mashed up supermen.

Eternal Sonata is fine, haven't played Vesperia yet.

The Last Remnant, Blue Dragon and Lost Odyssey (in order of preference) are all superior jRPGs, though.

You mean except for the two it's already gotten? :p

need to update my list a little. really enjoyed:

Lost Odyssey - emotional with lots of really nice little moments.
Tales of Vesperia - fun battles with lots of great character interactions.
Infinite Undiscovery - graphics are weak but the story is interesting and the characters are great. excellent localization as well. i was pleasantly suprised.

i will be playing Last Remnant and Blue Dragon after i finish IU

Lost Odyssey is hands down the best JRPG on the 360 so far. (Maybe even the best JRPG of this generation).

i agree, but i suggest you to give Vesperia a try, it's worth it. i didn't like the demo as well, but once i started the game i fell in love with it.

and yes, i can't stand ES either.

Lost Odyssey is pretty fantastic, and the graphics and music are excellent.

Just started Blue Dragon the other day and it's like playing a Super NES RPG on the 360 (fantastic).

agree, ES was a big disappointment. beautiful game but the story went nowhere and the ending was a letdown.

I don't count dreams as story. And the real story in Lost Odyssey became something really awful quite fast.

While we´re at JRPG´s. I haven´t played one yet. But now I got TLR and LO on the cheap.
With which should I start, what I should expect and what to do/not to do?

start LO first and don't get frustrated if you're having trouble with the first boss. he's brutal but the other bosses are easier once you lvl up and gather more party members. just be prepared for some wonderful character moments. :)

I like how Lost Odyssey has the most and highest recommendations in this thread, yet the OP never acknowledged it in the slightest.

i assume OP prefers the more anime look of RPGs judging from what he said "stood out" to him. he's not alone cuz i know someone who only played the prologue of LO and then stopped cuz he didn't like the art style. that disappointed me.

Between the 2 in the OP I did enjoy Eternal Sonata more... on the 2nd playthrough. I really can't recall the story of ES so that's how good it was, so if you're more interested in that I can recall more from ToV.

It's too bad that you want jrpg, but hates random encounters.

Art style is a bit different and I guess I can see how it would be off-putting, but personally it's one of the things that drew me to the game. Felt more like a game for adults, which isn't always easy to come by in the genre.

HEY ASSHOLE WHEN YOU TALK ABOUT THE ENDING OF AN RPG YOU SPOILER TAG IT

Eternal sonata bar the wtfending was very good.
Vesperia bores me to fucking tears.
Every character but the main guy is annoying, the ingame cut scenes are rubbish and stiff the combat is mash a and a direction to win if you dont you can run around like a headless chicken while your npcs spam heal you then mash some more:lol
Also one thing that will sound odd that I liked is in ES was that when you killed a motherfucker, hes dead. Not "oh hahaha il make an escape now!" after the fights ended or whatever.

Oh and the battle systems are pretty similar as far as I can remember... by the end of ES your chaining all these crazy attacks and spells and all sorts. The last boss of the secret maze dungeon thing is mental.
I enjoyed Eternal Sonata but dude, what the hell? I didn't think anyone could enjoy ES over Vesperia. ES is like Vesperia Lite.

And did you not make it far in Vesperia? "oh hahaha il make an escape now" isn't how I'd describe it :lol

Only they happen 50% as often compared to, say, FF VII. The game is not very heavy on random encounters, and everyone acts like seeing a screen whoosh is more aggravating than seeing enemies on the field around every freaking corner. You might be doing less fighting in the latter.. Then again, maybe not.

Sorry, I haven't been on all day. I had already looked into Lost Odyssy actually, and it really didn't appeal to me. Not because it's not Anime or whatever, I just doubted that I'd like it.

You never know though I guess.

And for the record, I think ToV got more recommendations, but I don't feel like counting.
