Just a little info on why I took this job:

I graduate college in May, then this summer I'll be living in mayfield. They are paying for an apartment and all living expense and I'll be making $14 an hour doing 40 hours a week.

If I do well on that internship, I'll be offered a full time position at 55k a year. Full benefits.

So you guys are telling me I can't be happy up there making that much money?

Cost of living is pretty nice here. At least down here in Akron you could probably support a family of four on $55k/yr.

55k is not that much dude. Where are you from originally?
I need to stop thinking in terms of LA, must be good money in Tennessee. What's the average price of rent in Mayfield?

You could support a family of 4 on 55k a year without too much trouble in NE ohio. Cost of living is pretty low.

In terms of rent, when I was in college, 10 minutes from downtown, it was 1k a month for a 3bd/2ba house.

what?

How is 4.5k (before taxes) a month out of school with no mortgage yet etc not a lot of money in CLEVELAND OHIO?

55K is a lot in Cleveland. I worked south of the city in the manufacturing area and made about that much, lived in Cleveland Heights, and had plenty of money to do whatever. I had two roommates and lived in a 4 bedroom house with garage parking, living room, dining room, three floors where I had the whole top floor to myself (bathroom, bedroom, office) and paid $400/month myself and $1200 total for the whole house.

That being said, the weather is abysmal, it's boring, and most places are very cliquey in that if you didn't grow up in Cleveland it's a little tough to meet people. My suggestion would be to join some Cleveland Plays sports teams for the stuff you like to do and then socialize when you can. West 6th street downtown can be fun, the house of blues is nice and so are a couple of the new bars they opened up near the Q/Progressive Field. Most college kids are in Cleveland Heights because that is the center of where Case Western and John Carroll are so you can have some fun on Coventry too.

Beechwood is nice, very upscale shopping in the mall and Legacy Village but it's definitely more suburban and there isn't a whole ton of stuff to do. I have a friend who lives out in Mayfield Heights and it felt kind of far away.

Truth be told I didn't like Cleveland and only lasted 12 months then moved to North Carolina to go back to business school. Best decision ever.

More specifically, the Mayfield area. I recently got a job in the IT department at Progressive Insurance.

Is anyone from here? How is the area? Lots of stuff to do? What is some "must do" stuff?

How about apartments? Is there a bad part of town you need to stay away from? I'm looking to spend between 700 and 1,000 a month for a nice apartment. Doesn't have to be top notch, but something nice.

First off, you're not moving to Cleveland. I DEMAND THE MODS CHANGE THE FUCKING TITLE! >:|

You're moving to a suburb of Cleveland, and once you visit Cleveland proper a few times; you'll probably stay the Hell out of Cleveland proper like every other suburban cocksmack that still loves to wave that shit encrusted Cleveland flag (SUCK IT FRANCE, WE HAD IT FIRST!) because your suburb doesn't have any name recognition. Positive or negative.

Having gotten that off my chest, Mayfield Heights is a nicer area and Progressive headquarters is conveniently located NOT IN CLEVELAND, so your commute shouldn't be too bad. Which is good, because as with all retarded suburbs the traffic patterns and streets over there are pretty god damn awful.

Mayfield Heights

Cleveland

Welcome to Ohio.

Enjoy your stay.

May you profit and get the fuck out shortly there after.

DO NOT GET STUCK IN OHIO!

Sorry to get all assburgers / Liternalnet on your ass; but as a life long prisoner of Cleveland I don't cotton to suburbanites (even the transplants) blowing hot air up my ass about "living in Cleveland."

Really?

You live in Cleveland?

When was the last time someone got shot down the street from you, or an senior citizen got beaten to death like a pinata by urban terrorists? Not recently? Then guess what, YOU DON'T LIVE IN CLEVELAND!

Remember kids:

You can't spell Cleveland, without LEAVE!™

Oh please, Cleveland's not that bad. We've all got an inferiority complex, we just try to say it's bad before anyone else does.

Welcome to Cleveland. Yes, the crime rate -- in certain areas -- is bad, but you'll find things to do downtown. Have fun and don't let the turds here get you down.

But yeah, Mayfield isn't Cleveland. :lol

Fuck that.

Clelveland proper is a dive and there's no end in sight. Even if you just travel withing Ohio itself you'll find nicer cities. Columbus is a real nice place. With plenty of shit to do and businesses to visit on weekends in the downtown area. Downtown cleveland exists only to service the suburban workforce. Such a shame because there are nice places I'd love to give my business to, but they're not open on weekends (Vincenzas). Yay! Cleveland. :/

One line I've recently heard regarding the city goes. . .

East side is the least side, West side is the best side.

Superficially speaking, very true.

Northeast Ohio may not be the most exciting place on the planet, but it's not all bad here...

PC Stuff:

Yeah I wouldn't be touting overpriced-ass Microcenter as a perk. It's Fry's retarded cousin.

MC has good sales and clearances though.

Also a good place to find forgotten games on the cheap.

And when it comes to hardware, I'll give MC my money for a Mac before I give that shitpile Apple Store my money. So fucking HATE Apple cult centers. Worst retail model EVER!

So this is what I'm mainly looking for.

In the suburbs of mayfield and the ones surrounding it (like beachwood or richmond heights, ect), how is the crime rate, are the apartments nice, is the area nice, is there plenty of stuff to do?

This is the most depressing "hey I'm moving to a new city how about some tips?" thread I've ever seen. :lol

This is totally what I wasn't expecting when I made this thread :(

Crime in that area isn't bad at all. IIRC a year or two back some dude flipped his wig and went nuts in his house. IIRC it involved shooting.

This is the exception, not the rule.

You won't find much to do there in the evenings. Look at links I provided and household stats and median ages. It's more of a family raising community. All the douchebags, yuppies, youngsters, and singles prefer Ohio City, Tremont, or Lakewood.

I currently live in Mayfield Heights, and work in East Cleveland. Starting to look at houses out in Mentor but went to college at Case Western and have lived in Beachwood/Mayfield Heights for a couple years now.

So, first off the weather is going to suck if you are moving from anywhere that has decent weather. It is cold and dreary for about half the year, but the summers are decent.

As people have said, there are some cool areas around the suburbs. Tremont, Ohio City and Coventry are some of the pretty trendy areas. Beachwood is upscale and has a very nice mall and Legacy Village (Apple Store, other upscale stores). If you (and the rest of us) are very lucky, we'll have LeBron-fucking-James for the next 3 or so years, so Cleveland has that going for it. If it's good enough for LeBron, it should be good enough for you.

Also, the cost of living is pretty low, so you'll be good on $55k.

Crime out here in Mayfield Heights isn't bad at all from what I've experienced.

Well, the closest Fry's seems to be in Indiana. That one is actually in Mayfield Heights. Microcenter is not my favorite place on the planet, but it's serviceable.

The trick with Microcenter is to buy CPU, motherboard, RAM, PSU, case, and HD in store (CPU, RAM, and HD because they have great deals...PSU and case to save on shipping costs) and then order the GPU from Newegg.

You're quite correct that the prices on some items are terrible, but it must be said that when your PSU and mobo die on a Friday evening, Microcenter is the place to go.

Moving to Cleveland for something that isn't a sure thing is a bad idea.

55k single with no kids is pretty close to baller status in NE Ohio. Trust me.

But the job market is pretty bad, an that money is a dangling carrot right now.

Ahahahahahahaha, what kind of fantastically retarded Ohioan math is that?

If we all made millions, we could put up with Clevelands shit too.

Durp derrr derr! Good enuf 4 ElBron hurp durp doooooo! *facepalm*

This thread is giving my droid a workout!

Hey, at least you're getting the first broadside out of the way. :lol

Best of luck on your job. That's a lot of money for your lifestyle in an area like that.

Yeah, Legacy Village is nice. Went there a few years ago after a Nine Inch Nails concert. My wife likes Crate and Barrel so we stopped there. Was impressed with the shopping. Bought some stuff, then GTFO out of Ohio and back to MY shitty city, Buffalo! :lol

My girlfriend is also going to be moving with me. We don't have any kids, and aren't married yet, but I can see that in our future, otherwise I wouldn't have asked her to come with me.

So it's just going to be us. Going to try to get a place in beachwood or richmond heights, just someplace that has a really nice apartment. Whatever she makes at whatever job she gets will also be added to the 55k I'll be making.

The main reason I asked about crime in the suburbs is because there is a chance I'll have to work 2nd or 3rd shift for a year or two at progressive, since they are 24/7. I want a low crime rate and possibly even a gated community so my girlfriend will feel safe at night, and so I won't worry as much about her being home alone.

So basically you guys are saying the suburbs will be fine for that right?

j-wood said:
Sorry, I misspoke. If I do well on the internship, I WILL be offered a full time position at that salary.

Good luck man.

I had a sweet gig making $40k+ a few years back, then the company pulled out of Cleveland after 18 months. They were a national tax company. D:

Fuck the Cleveland haters. Seriously.

The city has some serious, serious issues. There's no denying that.

But there's some fantastic stuff, too. Cleveland has one of the best orchestras in the world, one of the best hospitals in the county, an up-and-coming culinary scene, and one of the largest and best theater districts in the U.S. And in spite of their teams' long history of failure, Cleveland has some of the most loyal sports fans in the country.

I acknowledge Cleveland's many flaws, but I love the place and will defend it to the death.

oh gimme a break, you'd escape that place given the first chance :lol

Thanks!

I'd rather be "loyal to failure" than be like all of the douchebag bandwagon Steelers fans who live around me.

I've lived in Ohio my entire life. And guess what? I like it. My family and friends are here, the cost of living is low, and the people are down-to-earth. Shocking, huh?
