More specifically, the Mayfield area. I recently got a job in the IT department at Progressive Insurance.

Is anyone from here? How is the area? Lots of stuff to do? What is some "must do" stuff?

How about apartments? Is there a bad part of town you need to stay away from? I'm looking to spend between 700 and 1,000 a month for a nice apartment. Doesn't have to be top notch, but something nice.
Hit up:

  • the House of Blues
  • Lola (restaurant)
  • Blue Pointe Grille (restaurant)
  • some sporting events
  • Little Bar & Grille
  • the Flats
  • Rock & Roll Hall
  • Great Lakes Science Center
  • Beachwood (city just East)
  • Westlake (just West)
  • North Olmstead (just West)

For apartments, check out Crocker Park in Westlake.

and you'll have a good time. never mind the haters.

Congrats, you're loyal to failure.

That is what loyalty is all about. Sticking by your teams even when they aren't doing well. I know I'd rather do that than jump on whatever bandwagon is near.

I used to live in Mayfield. It used to be a good area. Mayfield Village is still good though, although there's nothing to do. Mayfield Heights is a different story. It's more city-like now and more dangerous than when I used to live there, but not that much.

Beachwood is good too. Lots of restaurants in Legacy Village and on Chagrin Boulevard. Definitely give Coventry Road a once over, too, if you're with friends. But, again, with Coventry, be careful. Beachwood and Chagrin are very safe though. Chagrin Falls is very nice, too, if you get a chance to go there.

Ah, also, Beachwood and Chagrin Boulevard has horrible traffic almost daily. Good luck with those!

Thanks!

I'd rather be "loyal to failure" than be like all of the douchebag bandwagon Steelers fans who live around me.

Its easy to feel superior to a bunch of rape apologists.

How's their reconciliation going?

I know, its was a cheap shot, but it needed to be said!

Just a little info on why I took this job:

I graduate college in May, then this summer I'll be living in mayfield. They are paying for an apartment and all living expense and I'll be making $14 an hour doing 40 hours a week.

If I do well on that internship, I'll be offered a full time position at 55k a year. Full benefits.

So you guys are telling me I can't be happy up there making that much money?
All you need to be happy anywhere is a good job and friends. You'll be fine

yes, because to a LAL fan, every Cavs fan has been a fan for no more than 6 years.

it makes you guys feel better. after all, what's the likelihood that a LAL fan roots for a losing team in any sport? you guys don't know what it means to be a real fan of anything but that which is very easy to be a fan of. wanna impress me? go be a Clipper fan.

moral relativism at its worst.

Go Cavs/Indians/Browns. fuck you haters.

and that's from the heart, son.

indeed.

Doyers and Kings haven't been all that great until past couple years.

My girlfriend is also going to be moving with me. We don't have any kids, and aren't married yet, but I can see that in our future, otherwise I wouldn't have asked her to come with me.

So it's just going to be us. Going to try to get a place in beachwood or richmond heights, just someplace that has a really nice apartment. Whatever she makes at whatever job she gets will also be added to the 55k I'll be making.

The main reason I asked about crime in the suburbs is because there is a chance I'll have to work 2nd or 3rd shift for a year or two at progressive, since they are 24/7. I want a low crime rate and possibly even a gated community so my girlfriend will feel safe at night, and so I won't worry as much about her being home alone.

So basically you guys are saying the suburbs will be fine for that right?

None. I know, I'm a clippers fan.

If you are moving into the Mayfeild/ Mayfeild Heights are you're actually in the perfect spot to avoid having to venture into the worst parts of the city. Cleveland Heights, Coventry, and the University Circle area are a short drive away, and you won't even have to go near MLK or the East Cleveland suburbs to get anywhere.

Also Lakewood, and parts of the west side are decent places to hang out and drink. I hope you like to drink too, cause there pretty much nothing else to do in the city. Well you can check the semi-decent music scene but be wary of the Beachland Ballroom. It's a great venue that is smack dab in one of the worst areas of the city.

Grog shop is cool and located right in your wheelhouse. You'll probably want to stick to that Cleveland Heights area, as it's IMO the most interesting neighborhood in the city. Dowtown Cleveland is a no man's land.

EDIT:

Thank your good fortune your girlfreind is moving in with you. There is literally NO dating scene in Cleveland. Beachwood is very posh as far as Cleveland goes, and located relatively close to the Progressive headquarters. It's a little isolated though. Most of the southern suburbs are pretty safe outside of Solon, and Brooklyn areas.

Are these good areas to have an apartment in as well?

Cleveland Heights has really nice areas if you're looking to lease a place. The other areas are more suited to college kids. The apartments I've seen in Coventry and University Circle weren't great.

BTW, we don't have a mall anymore. -_- You'll probably want to hit up Beachwood or Richmond

ETA: Unless you count Tower City and I haven't been there in YEARS

Hey! Cleveland just selected Joe Hayden!

Maybe in a few years MH really will turn things around up there. Then I can go to football games at least!

:lol :lol :lol

Dude, you'll be safe in Mayfield. Stop shitting your pants.

spotcrime.com is a handy resource to see general figures for an area.

Since you'll be in that area hit up Geraci's. People spooge over their pizza. It's good. Didn't blow my mind, but still noteworthy.

Also Bialy's has some damn fine bagels if you like your bagels like I like my women, tough and delicious! :P

When you feel adventurous check out Vincenzas for the best New York style pizza in this god forsaken city.

Actually, the real adventurous pizza spot would be Arcade Pizza. It's not any particular style; but it's tasty and been around for years. Just go before dark, and have a look out.

Richmond Mall sucks now. When Starbucks, Ruby Tuesday, and Barnes & Noble close, you know the area sucks.

Beachwood is good if you want to shop for clothes, though.

And as far as living in University Circle, Cleveland Heights, or Coventry, it's okay to start I guess. But not good for longevity.

I was under the impression shopping malls as I grew up with have fallen out of favor, and now bullshit like Cracker Park and LegSUV Village were all the rage with consumers.

WE LIVE IN OHIO, MOTHERFUCKERS! The less time I spend OUTSIDE during the winter months, the better.

Fuck your hippy ass shopping "communities".

You'll be fine... Cleveland does suck, but you gotta do what you gotta do. I've lived in Ohio my entire life (and I'm finally getting out), but most places it's about the people not where you live. Make some good friends, get some job experience, and move when you get tired of it. Oh, and go to Cedar Point.

Good food and drink there. I miss Christmas ale. I really like how there are so many independent restaurants and bars in Cleveland. I stayed for a week in little Italy and had a great time. I did not find the place scary like East St. Louis or anything. Most places near Case Western seamed like nice places to live.

Yes, the Cleveland Metroparks is a very underrated part of the city. 22,000 acres that surround the city like a necklace. Great places for biking, walking, fishing, etc etc. Doesn't get enough run.

The truth is that the Greater Cleveland area is probably the second best place to live in Ohio. Better than Cincy, better than Toledo/Akron or Dayton. Only Columbus (and it's surrounding areas) has it beat.

You'll be welcomed with open arms. You're probably the first person to move into Cleveland for 3 or so years.

I will take this town by storm. One day, I will be the King of Cleveland.

That spot will be open this summer when LeBron leaves.

Just you guys wait. It will happen. I will spread Justice, Truth, and Freedom so hard throughout the greater Cleveland area that the darkness will run and hide.

Ive been up to Cleveland a few times, it's like a totally different state up there. NE Ohio has a completely different feel from the rest of the state its kind of weird. Hopefully the suburb you're moving to doesnt die. Cleveland is one of the few places where they have suburbs of suburbs.

CrankyJay said:
Yeah, I stopped at that too.

Hey, milquetoast suburbanites love their commercial sports bars! :lol

Jwood: don't forget about the West Side Market for the freshest meats and vegetables, along with a variety of other good stuff like pastries, pasta, pierogis. If you go later in the day you can avoid the disgusting clots of humanity AND get good deals on bread and pastries.

Then across the street is Great Lakes Brewery, which despite being a douchebag magnet during sporting events has a great selection of tasty beer.

Sokolowski Inn is another great place to get old world food for lunch or dinner.

Yeah if times were running backward you'd have this flag about a hundred years ahead of us :lol

(GAF makes it like Cleveland is the worse shithole on earth. Wait... isn't it where the Torso killings took place, Eliott Ness and all that jazz ? That's something !)

Pretty much this. I'm from Columbus and I'm glad I live here and not there, but there are definitely good parts of the Cleveland suburbs to live and some good stuff in Cleveland proper. Just be prepared for a rundown looking industrial city that had it's heyday years ago and has since gone into some decay. But really, if you're going to be in the burbs, that doesn't matter much.

And if you really want good shopping and a better overall downtown experience just come down to Columbus occasionally to hang out. Cleveland has an advantage over Columbus in that the only pro sports teams we have are in soccer and hockey. I'd trade both of those for a baseball team here other than the Clippers that we do have (AAA team for the Indians).

dodgers have quite the following in LA. although since its impossible for people in LA to be real fans of any sport like everybody says then i'm probably wrong.

Those Crocker Park apartments are way expensive, but it'd be pretty awesome living there. I'm actually thinking about getting a decent apartment in North Olmsted.

Ohio definitely isn't as bad as everyone seems to make it out to be.

BTW, would like to thank my dad for taking me out of Ohio at the tender age of 3. We used to live in Chardon.

I go back and visit Cleveland from time to time. I don't know why.

I have lived in the Cleveland area all my life (both westside, eastside, and south). I currently live on the Westside and would love to recommend it for you, but it would be such a far drive from Westlake to Mayfield to Progressive's headquarters that during the winter it would seriously take you a few hours to go the 45 or so miles. Sadly, the area you'll be in (Mayfield) is considered part of Cleveland's main "snow-belt", so come winter time expect to get hit pretty hard with snow and ice and shitty traffic tie-ups. You'll be using Interstate 271 for your daily commute, which is a nightmare in the winter.

As for a specific city to live, for where you're working at and for what you're looking for (safety, security and a good low-crime environment), it's pretty hard for me to not recommend Beachwood. Yes it is a bit pricey, but as others have said, at $55K/year, you'll have no problem afford a decent place, and most there top out at $1500/month, which is probably the most expensive rent in the entire Cleveland area (other than Crocker Park in Westlake or certain parts of downtown Cleveland). Beachwood has a mall with all the fancy stores (Saks, Nordstroms, a Bose store), plus as someone else mentioned they have Legacy Village, which is beautiful and has an assload of shopping in it too.

Good luck here and be prepared for hardly any sunshine lol...

North Olmstead is a good place. Nice mall, good selection of restaurants, not too far from anything.

I had an ex that lived out there for awhile. She was across the highway from the mall in an apartment complex. can't remember the name of it.
