So in your opinion...Nexus 7, iPad mini, or Kindle HD?

Nexus 7 is the best value in my opinion. iPad mini is ok if you like the Apple ecosystem, or like iOS gaming. Kindle HD is just kind of meh to me, Android and iOS both have better stuff than Amazon can offer by itself.

The iPad Mini doesn't come out until tomorrow right? I don't see how anyone could say it's the best at this point.

whats there to find out about tomorrow? but its like comparing a BMW to a Ford Fusion... its almost twice the price.

and the kindle HD in the conversation is cute for the Kindle HD, the only single reason for that over the nexus 7 would be if every moment you use your tablet you use it on amazon instant streaming .

On the contrary if you want Books, Music and Movies you probably aren't shopping the Play Store.

Is Amazon video on all three at this point?

Not on Android and you can't buy on iOS.

The Nexus 7 is the best bang for the buck, hands down. Unless you're already invested in the Apple ecosystem, I see the iPad Mini has overpriced and already begging for a spec/feature bump at that price.

The Fire HD is a easy pick for third place, but it's not terrible if you're a big time consumer of Amazon Instant Video services. It's locked down pretty hard though, and I'd miss all of the extra features the N7 provides while offering a more smooth performance.

So yeah...

1. Nexus 7
2. iPad Mini (unless you're an Apple guy, then just pay the premium for it)
3. Fire HD

I got some hands on with the iPad Mini today. Incredibly well built, amazing to hold and use. IF you have an iPad, you know what to expect, but on a device which is smaller.

I've also used a Nexus 7 and Kindle Fire HD. I'd personally say the Nexus 7 is the better of the latter two.

But the Kindle Fire HD is a pretty cool device, I think it's going to be the one of those three that doesn't really get a look in, just because of the timing of it's launch here in the UK. But it's still impressive and I think it does what it does the best of the three. Let you consume media. The speakers are pretty solid for something so small.

Wait, what? The Play Store is fine for any of those things. I'd prefer buying on Kindle for books, but for music and movies the Play Store is fine (especially for music).

The apps already exist. The big advantage the iPad mini has over the other tablets is the app ecosystem. You don't even need to touch the device to know that.

iPad mini has the best screen size and shape. Better apps are available on it and it's smooth like an iPad. Scrolling and swiping around is just nicer.

Nexus 7 costs less and feels like it, but is about as functional.

Really, the App Store/Itunes is unmatched. But it shouldn't be a deal breaker depending on how you want to use the tablet.

Worst screen resolution. Its a joke really.

Paying more for shittier quality. Its the apple way.

A decent pick for hardware but the rest of it hasn't caught up.

There's also the Kobo Arc which is like the Nexus 7, has full Play Store access and a faster OMAP 4470 processor for the same price.

I am a resolution whore....and that screen is godly. I can't help myself.

If the ecosystem is vital iPad Mini, otherwise the Nexus 7. The Kindle Fire shouldn't even be an option.

Kindle fire is an option because it has Amazons shows and movies. I agree that it would clearly come in 3rd between these three tablets, but I dont agree that it doesn't compare. Depending on what you want to use your tablet for, the Amazon tablets are great value for the price. It just happens to be a tough sale versus the Nexus 7.

They really need to minimize the bezel on the Nexus 7. Same problem with the new 10. It just looks so ugly. The Mini looks amazing with the minimal bezel.

If you want a tablet experience and not a blownup phone one plus godly built quality: iPad
If you want to pay less, have good built quality and an higher res screen: Nexus7
If you want to read books on it: Fire HD

What the iPad lacks in price it makes up for with ecosystem. The inverse is true for the N7. The Fire... well, that's just garbage at a discount.

Its all going to come down to apps, and which ecosystem you're more into.

I moved from Apple to Droid last year, have the Nexus 7, its a great tablet at $130 cheaper, and has better specs to boot.

Except that it's apparently a bit annoying to hold, even though Apple's software supposedly cancels out incidental gripping on the sides.

It needs a bigger bezel, actually, but it's already pushing the limits of the term "mini."

Play Store looks fine to me for video, and Android and iOS both have Kindle apps. Apple is probably always going to have the leg up on music selection, but I don't think that's most people's primary use for tablets anyway.

Interesting, that didn't even cross my mind. It looks so good like that though!

There seems to be differing opinions on that where some reviewers claim it really no issue at all. I'll have to check one out this weekend and see, my hands are pretty big though so I don't see it being a problem.

The Verge said:
I actually had a little trouble holding onto the device when I wasn't using the Smart Cover due to the back being as smooth as it is, and the frame being so thin. Maybe it's just my big hands, but I wanted a little more to grab onto. In that regard, I prefer the feel of the Nexus 7.

That problem was exacerbated by how wide the device feels in your hand, as well as the lack of a significant bezel around the left and right of the screen in portrait. Maybe it's just old habit, but I didn't feel completely comfortable putting my thumb over the screen itself.

This and the screen resolution was the two issues Josh had with the Mini.

If you have to write software to 'ignore the fingers on the screen' then it probably needs more bezel to remedy that IMO. I can understand why they didn't, its already fairly large for a 'small' tablet, but still.

iPad Mini

I don't know why anybody would want a tablet that runs mostly just blown up phone apps. The native app support for Android tablets is a joke.
