So in your opinion...Nexus 7, iPad mini, or Kindle HD?

Nexus 7 for most, iPad mini for children or parents. I'm a long time Android user and I understand its not that hard to use, its just.. its not as easy as iOS.. which is stupid proof. Stupid-proof is what you want for parents, it avoids them asking you how to do stuff. Kids, kind of.. my son mastered the iPad a year ago when he just turned 2 and has Android figured how now at 3.. but some kids may not have that kind of exposure to just pick it up as easily.

Safe bet for kids/parents is iPad Mini, everyone else gets a Nexus 7 since its far superior in most everything it does (IMO).

If you have to write software to 'ignore the fingers on the screen' then it probably needs more bezel to remedy that IMO. I can understand why they didn't, its already fairly large for a 'small' tablet, but still.

Actually to me it makes more sense to increase visible area. If your fingers are on it oh well we can reject the edges, but any uncovered part is extra real-estate to show stuff. A screen is better than a bezel even if it functions the same.

Fingerprint Nazis will take issue though.

to summarise: buy the inferior, overpriced device so you can lock yourself in to an ecosystem which will require you to buy further inferior, overpriced devices in the future.

iPad Mini

I don't know why anybody would want a tablet that runs mostly just blown up phone apps. The native app support for Android tablets is a joke.

Because video, browsing and ebooks will look better on the higher resolution?

ipad mini.

Better build quality, better sized screen and a much better ecosystem. I'll wait for next years 2nd gen with a retina display, though.

(Please, Apple, give the next gen ipad mini a retina.. I beg..)

I find it weird that some people seem to be down on Apple for "locking you down" into an ecosystem. Isn't that how it is for anything? Be it the Nexus or the Kindle? At least Apps wise.

If you want a tablet experience and not a blownup phone one plus godly built quality: iPad
If you want to pay less, have good built quality and an higher res screen: Nexus7
If you want to read books on it: Fire HD

if you want to read books on it, buy an e-ink. fire HD is the best of the three for video watching, though

another day, another tablet wars thread

I'm planning to get a Nexus 7 myself...my wife and I have iPhones and an iPad 2 already, so the Nexus 7 is more for me to tinker around with Android for once. Not really planning to be app-heavy or media-heavy with it (that's what our iDevices are for), mostly just have it as a quick-access Chrome or YouTube viewer whenever I want to casually look up something at home, more or less.

So? Most people are not going to be bothered by the lower pixel density. Also, ebooks at 16x9? Lol

I think more people care about the actual apps, and that's where the iPad has a huge advantage.

Surface Pro

Umm I mean Nexus 7

But I would sell my nexus 7 if I had a surface pro or x240t thinkpad
Or any touch enabled tablet /full fledge laptop device with Windows 8

Ironically the iPad counts for roughly 90% of web traffic across all tablets. And you can find many surveys that suggest a large majority of iPad owners use it primarily for web browsing.

I'd say I used my Ipad 2 90% of the time on the web, 5% for music and the rest email/social networking.

I could understand somebody saying the iPad Mini screen is not as impressive. I don't see how anybody could say the screen is trash. I think the iPad Mini specs are a bit dated, but it is still good hardware. The available software is what is most important. And right now, the Mini has far better software. If both prices are fine with you, go with the mini. If the Mini costs too much for you, go with the Nexus 7.

Those surveys tell that people don't us Android tablets much, not that people don't use iPad apps.

I have and love the Nexus 7. In terms of apps it has everything I need and Android has really upped its game as an OS.

I really think the whole number of apps thing is overblown.

When I first got my iPad 2 I downloaded and used lots of apps. Now I still use my iPad as much as ever but 80+% of the time I am just using Safari.

A tablet doesn't need dedicated apps like a phone does and usually I prefer just using the website because it has more features.

I would give up most apps just to have the best web browser and I think Chrome on my phone is better than mobile Safari with its ridiculous nine tab limit.

EDIT: I am talking about a 10" tablet though, apps are probably more useful in a smaller form factor.

iPad Mini

I don't know why anybody would want a tablet that runs mostly just blown up phone apps. The native app support for Android tablets is a joke.

Because the iPad mini costs 65% more than the Nexus 7 while offering a lower quality screen for media consumption.

I didn't realize so many people have physically used the Ipad Mini.

How did you all get them early for these personalized impressions?

I am just assuming it is a small Ipad, with no extra special powers. So if I have an ipad (well my wife has one ;P) I have no need to buy it unless I want the 7" factor right?

Same thing for the Nexus, I like 10" tabs.

Honestly have never looked at the Kindle one..heh.

I waited for Mini and Surface RT reviews before pulling trigger on my first tablet. I ended up with Nexus 7 because of the fact that it has the best specs/quality/design to price ratio easily. As a Android phone owner i've seen the app situation getting a ton better in a past year and there really is not many type of apps that are missing a good app in Play Store and the situation seems to get increasingly better all the time. Android mind share and developer interest is clearly on the rise.

N7 also seems the most future proof since Google has a great track record of supporting their Nexus devices and the device itself has great specs that won't be obsolete anytime soon. This is a category of device that i don't want to upgrade very often so this is very important.

iPad Mini seems to me like a gimped product from the get-go. I would not be surprised if Apple and developers dropped the support for it pretty soon. I'd say if you want iPad Mini, wait for the next years revision with better SoC, 512Mb to 1G memory bumb and retina screen. This years version fails to prove to be worth the Apple premium price in my opinion. Premium in price only as far as i see it.

What apps do normal people use that aren't available on Android?

It's mostly missing more specialty apps like music production, video editing and drawing... things like that. General things that most people use are well covered with great apps in my opinion.

Sitting here playing with a Fire HD someone lent me. I'm personally interested in the Nexus 7.

I understand DPI is the same on the N7. Looks nice.

However, web browsing continues to be a choppy affair. I meant, it's totally usable, but it just doesn't stack up to the smooth-as-silk scrolling on iOS.

So can anyone load up a fairly intensive webpage (ie the Verge) on an N7 and tell me how choppy it is?

BTW the HD has this case and it is absolutely fantastic. Very simple, but the little rubbery edge of the back makes it stand up at any angle (landscape only, of course). Anyone know of an equivalent for the nexus 7?

This may be a stupid question but cant you take advantage of the Amazon store with the Nexus? Or some special benefits through the Fire HD that I dont know of. I already got a Nexus 7 waiting for me in the US so I already picked a winner.

Mini....honestly I have a Nexus 7 sitting right next to me....its a really good tablet but if you care about apps then there really is no other choice....yet
