So is shovelware pretty much dead now?

One of Wii U's launch titles was shovelware.

So is shovelware pretty much dead NOW?

Even if shovelware appeared to be "dead," it would always come back at the end of the generation.

It's hiding in its coffin, like Dracula, waiting for its time to rise again and suck the blood of unwary consumers.

Shovelware seems to be more common on platforms that are more popular among children, because "Hey, they don't know the difference - or at least their parents won't notice". DS and Wii were the PetZ/BabyZ/ThingZ-consoles and seems like the new generation of Nintendo consoles continues that trend. Also the mobile market has become so infested with shovelware that it's been hard to find anything worthwhile for a long time.

Pretty sure we'll see shovelware on the next generation consoles in the latter parts of the generation when they're cheaper and therefore more accessible to the lower middle class families with small children.

iOS as android and the shovel ware platforms currently, but I thing it will hit the consoles again.

Especially with all these indies that seem to be jumping on the bandwagon. the first few years of XB1 & PS4 are going to be a mixed bag.

Im having a hard time believing that shovelware devs can even afford to work on next gen consoles. The PS2 era and into the Wii had a host of seriously crappy games. With the rise of the WiiU and now PS4 and XB1 are we going to see far fewer of these terrible games, mostly because it costs a lot to get a game out now especially on nextgen hardware?
EDIT: PC shovelware of course will be alive and well until the end of time

It doesn't cost a lot when the shovelware games are still using PS2 era art assets. PC games have been "HD" for well over 10 years, so 720P/1080P on its own isn't an issue for costs if you don't care what your game looks like.

As long as there are licensed movies/tv shows, there will be shovelware.

Not saying all licensed franchise games are shovelware, just most.

The 3ds version of Dsney infinity is pretty shovel ware to me

I've always wondered, do the Japanese get Japanese movie-tie-in/tv-show-tie-in shovelware, or is it always Disney/Dreamworks/Nickelodeon etc. Western shovelware?

It won't be different to any other generation in this regard. The upcoming generation isn't necessarily any more expensive to develop for - if you're making shovelware. You can just put out the same shit you put out last generation, work with an easier architecture, and just output it at 1080p.

Gust and Idea Factory are still making games, afaik.

On a serious note, the shovelware situation on 3DS isn't as bad as it was on the DS thanks to smartphone and tablets but it's still pretty bad. In any given month where you have a quality release there's a handful of licensed or low-budget garbage. And of course, PC is the shovelware heaven thanks to no licensing costs.

Shovelware will never die.

Even big AAA publisher like Activison released a shovelware like The Walking Dead:Survival Instinct and Fast & Furious:Showdown.

This proves you can still make some money in shovelware market if a big publisher like Activison can waste their money releasing shovelware.

But maybe theyre swimming in COD's cash so they just didnt care at all.

Huh can someone point out why it's seen as a good thing that part of the offer is moving away with its customers and its money?
How is that a good thing that people buying shovelwares aren't buying console games anymore?

Just because a console CAN have create HD graphics and production values doesn't mean they WILL always have them.

There's nothing really stopping someone making a PS1-era styled minigame collection on the PS4 and claiming it as "artistic direction" after all.

It'll never be dead. They will always find a way.
